Discussion: Judge Robert Dewar's Ruling on Rape

Come to the Bulman Centre, University of Winnipeg, 515 Portage Ave, on Tuesday, March 1 at 7:00 pm to continue the discussion about what demands should be made of Judge Dewar, the government that appointed him and the justice system in general.

This is a followup of the Rally against Judge Robert Dewar’s rape case ruling.  The rally was held at the Manitoba Law Courts Building on Friday, February 25, because Judge Dewar said:
"inviting circumstances" and survivor’s attire make rapist less morally responsible for rape.

Alanna Makinson
Canadian Federation of Students–Manitoba

Women’s Centres are appalled that a Manitoba Judge seems to be holding a Thompson rape survivor responsible for her rapist’s actions, on the basis of her sexuality and attire at the time of the incident. The centres point out that survivors of crimes such as theft or assault are not blamed for the perpetrators’ actions, yet women continue to be re-traumatised in the courtroom because some judges fail to understand the legal meaning of “no means no”.

“Judge Dewar was wrong to question what the woman was wearing the night that she was raped,” states Alanna Makinson, Chairperson of the Canadian Federation of Students–Manitoba. “Flirting, a short skirt, or a kiss never implies consent to intercourse.”

Added Joan Dawkins, Executive Director of the Women’s Health Clinic: “When a judge ignores the reality of sexual violence and blames a woman for the actions of her attacker, he not only harms the woman but makes it that much more difficult for the next victim to come forward and trust the judicial process. The result – rapists go free.”

The Canadian Federation of Students–Manitoba is calling on Judge Dewar to apologise for his ruling and be held accountable for his failure to understand that there is no such thing as “implied consent”. The level of moral responsibility assigned to a convicted rapist should not hinge on his victim’s attire or sexuality.

“To suggest that a rapist is less guilty because he was ‘insensitive’ to the fact that the victim was not a willing participant is irresponsible,” states Katie Haig-Anderson, Women’s Commissioner of the Canadian Federation of Students–Manitoba. “If a person is not a willing participant in a sexual interaction, if she does not give consent, then that is sexual assault. Judge Dewar has muddied the waters, and he should get some education on this issue, as well as apologise to the rape survivor, to the justice system and to the Manitobans serves.”

Four nuns traveling by canoe toward an unknown destination, a small-town stenographer crowned beauty queen, a landlocked mermaid, and a reckless runaway with one true wish - these are some of the characters that inhabit the songs of Winnipeg singer/songwriter Christine Fellows.

Spin Magazine’s 4-star review of Fellows’ 2007 album, Nevertheless,  hails her writing as “…slyly unpredictable, rarely self-serious, and unabashedly tuneful.”

Throughout 2011, she will be touring, backed by Reliquary/Reliquaire collaborators, and cellists Leanne Zacharias and Alex McMaster.

Fellows often works with artists from all disciplines to create performance works, scores and  spectacles.
She was Composer-in-Residence at Winnipeg’s Contemporary Dancers (2007-08),
Artist-in-Residence at Le Musée de Saint-Boniface Museum in Winnipeg (2009),

Marcel Desilets & Last Ditch On The Left

Marcel Desilets & Last Ditch On The Left will be at Aqua Books on Wednesday, March 2, from 8:00 pm to 10:00 pm.

$10.00 admission

Marcel Desilets has blended folk, rythym and poetry into one to provide a unique listening experience. Some of his songs are humorous, some are sweet, and some are downright cosmic, but all of them are loving celebrations of life. Marcel adds to his poetic sense of lyric just a beautiful touch on guitar.

Last Ditch On The Left, born in the Autumn of 2009, was a necessary consequence from the determined bent of Kerri Woelke and Brent Warren.  The varied musical backgrounds and influences impart a present-day-nostalgic sensibility.

Toronto's Art Bar: Dawn Kresan

Dawn will be reading from her chapbook Framed at Clinton's, 693 Bloor Street West, Toronto, ON, on Tuesday, March 1, from 8:00 pm to 11:00 pm.

Framed explores the life of Elizabeth Siddal, who was married to the Pre-Raphaelite artist Dante Gabriel Rossetti. From the working class, Siddal’s association with influential artists and their upper-class patrons was life altering. As a model, then pupil, she quickly developed artistic ambitions. She is best known as the inspiration for her husband’s paintings. Although her husband and the art critic John Ruskin supported her artistic development, they did so while upholding the doctrine that a woman’s primary duty was to her family.

In Framed, Kresan regards class and gender as rigid structures that confined Siddal and the primary lens through which she was viewed.

Chapbook edition is limited to 60 copies, signed and numbered by the author. The binding has been hand sewn with linen thread. Laser printed on Neenah columns text paper in classic natural white. Collage end papers created with text and images from Russell Ash’s Dante Gabriel Rossetti (Harry N. Abrams Inc, 1995). The cover has been laser printed on handmade St. Armand Ontario flax canal papers.
Published by Palimpsest Press in 2009.

The Arrogant Worms

The West End Cultural Centre presents The Arrogant Worms 20th Anniversary Tour on Thursday, March 3.

The Arrogant Worms (Mike McCormick, Chris Patterson and Trevor Strong) began as a comedy troupe performing on the campus radio station in 1991 in Kingston, Ontario. As the live show developed, the songs delighted the audience. The sketches... not so much.

The shows are fast, furious and family friendly. The wit is quick, the satire is biting and the musicianship is second to none.

The Arrogant Worms have sold more than 150,000 copies of their 12 albums and played on three continents to crowds as large as 100,000, from folkfests around the world to Central Park in NYC to sporting events like Grey Cup.

They were recognized in 2003 as the Touring Act of the Year by the Canadian Arts Presenters Association. Their songs are in school lesson plans, in textbooks and even played on the Space Shuttle.

The Worms donate their time and talent to the cause of literacy in Canada through Frontier College and were awarded the Peter Gzowski Award for their efforts.

Diana McIntosh

Come to Mc Nally Robinson, Grant Park in the Atrium, on Thursday February 24, 7:00 pm to meet composer/performer Diana McIntosh, who will be launching her new CD Pinnacles.

This special evening features live performances of three of the recorded pieces, featuring Diana McIntosh on piano and voice, Laurel Ridd on flute and Vincent Ellin on bassoon.

The pieces are inspired by a hot air balloon ride over the Massai Mara in Kenya, a tent camp in southern Kenya and Diana’s love of mountains streams and falls – with the presence of her mountain adventures felt clearly throughout.

Only “A Rose is a Rose” is a departure from the mountain theme, dealing as it does with the “high” and abstract world of Gertrude Stein and her love of the sound and rhythms of the spoken word.
This colourful cross-section of solos, duos and ensembles are performed by McIntosh herself on piano and spoken voice, Laurel Ridd, Karl Stobbe, Daniel Sholz, Yuri Hooker, Vincent Ellin, Beverley Johnston and Ben Reimer.

Women for Afghan Women Campaign

Join Women for Afghan Women (WAW) in the fight to protect women's shelters and women's human rights.

The government of Afghanistan has introduced a bill that takes control of women's shelters from the local Afghan women that have founded them, and transfers that control to the Ministry of Women's Affairs.

If this bill becomes law:

Women and girls seeking shelter will be required to plead their case before a Government panel which will determine whether a woman needs to be in a shelter or should be sent to jail or returned to her abuser.

Women will have to undergo virginity tests to determine whether they have had sex and therefore committed adultery. The tests are medically invalid.

Once admitted to a shelter, women will be forbidden to leave. Their shelter will become their prison.

There is no mention of women's human rights, of the horrific abuse that most women in shelters have fled.

If any family member comes to claim her, even her abuser, she will be handed over, to be subjected to the harshest retribution for shaming the family.

Donate to Women for Afghan Women.
Write to your elected officials.
Read up on the issue to increase your knowledge.

For more information:
158-24 73rd Ave.
Fresh Meadows, NY 11366
Tel: 718.591.2434
office@womenforafghanwomen.org

The bill is the culmination of a long, intense campaign by enemies of women's rights in the Afghan government who claim:  shelters are unIslamic, corrupt, and agents of immoral activity.

Women's shelters are run by local Afghan women's NGOs. They are not foreign imports. Their mission, to seek justice and human rights for women, is compatible with the highest values of Islam.

With this bill the government pits itself against Afghans who have risked their lives securing women's rights.

Shelter lawyers gain access to civil law for women who would otherwise be subjected to tribal law.

The new regulations will mark the return to the desolation of the Taliban years.
