This is an ongoing interactive community project which asks men to make the promise not to use their hands in violence against women, not to ignore or tolerate the violence they witness.

The banner is a tool to begin dialogue, show support and build a stronger community through art. The process is visual, interactive and performance based.

Mondragon: Benjamin Isitt

Wednesday, June 29 · 7:00pm - 9:00pm
The Mondragon, 91 Albert Street

Join Ben Isitt for the launch of two new books on the social history of Canada.
Benjamin Isitt is a former Winnipegger, a current University of British Columbia historian and a specialist on social movements in twentieth-century Canada and the world.

From Victoria to Vladivostok highlights Canadian responses to the Russian Revolution – sympathy from the labour movement alongside the deployment of 4,000 troops to Siberia to fight the Bolsheviks.

Militant Minority moves into the Cold War period, examining changes in British Columbia's left during the bleak days of McCarthyism and the tumultuous 1960s, culminating in the election of BC's first NDP government.

Taken together, these books tell important stories that have been left out of popular memory. The evening will include an engaging multi-media presentation.

Aleesa Cohene: I know how you feel

Wednesday, June 29 · 8:00 pm - 11:00 pm
MAWA, 611 Main St

Free!

I know how you feel
Curated by Clint Enns

Aleesa Cohene, the Sobey-nominated artist, will be in attendance!
She is a Toronto based video artist who uses found-footage as material and editing as a tool. Cohene provides us with a lens under which the viewer can see and examine many of the stereotypes present in traditional narrative cinema. In essence, she is revealing the mirror which the media uses to reflect our “beliefs” back to us.

Artistically and ethically speaking, Cohene does not see these images as private property, but as “basic materials through which we have an obligation to express ourselves and define our individuality.”

Aleesa Cohene has been producing videos since 2001. Her work has shown in festivals and galleries across Canada as well as in Brazil, Germany, the Netherlands, Russia, Scandinavia, Thailand, Turkey and the United States.
She has won prizes at Utrecht’s Impakt Festival and Toronto’s Images Festival.

The screening will include:

Abscess (2001, 10 minutes).

Absolutely (2001, 10 minutes)

All Right (2003, 7 minutes)

Ready to Cope (2006, 7 minutes)

Suppose To (2006, 7 minutes)

The Same Problem (2008, 4 minutes)

Something Better (2008, 8 minutes)

Presented in partnership with PLATFORM centre for photographic + digital arts
and Video Pool.

Jessica Thompson: Shelter

Shelter- An Art Exhibit/ Fundraiser for The Winnipeg Humane Society

The Edge Gallery, 611 Main Street
June 25 - June 30
$5 Admission
Come to the official fundraiser and party on Saturday, June 25 from noon until 6:00 pm!
25% of all art sales will be going to the Winnipeg Humane Society

Following up the success of “Strays”, her art exhibit/ fundraiser for D’Arcy’s ARC in November, 2010, Thompson is displaying a new experience of photography and awareness titled “Shelter.”

I had volunteered to spend the day in this place of neglected, abandoned and abused animals now sheltered from harm but still without families to call their own.
I, a passionate lover and rescuer of animals, had chosen to spend the day getting to know the true personalities of some of Winnipeg’s homeless pets. I looked down to the camera in my hands and I remembered.
I was at Canada’s oldest animal shelter, the Winnipeg Humane Society to capture what it means to be compassionate, aware and most importantly, full of hope.

Blue King Brown / Orgone

BLUE KING BROWN (AUSTRALIA)
ORGONE (LOS ANGELES)

Wednesday, June 22
10:00 pm
Pyramid Cabaret, 176 Fort St.

Underscoring the fiery vocals and political lyrics of Natalie Paapaa, Blue King Brown has created a distinctly original sound from Afrobeat, reggae, and Latin influences.
The band broke out with its first single, Water, from its debut EP in 2005. It followed with its first full-length CD Stand Up.
Now encompassing from 7 to 10 members, Blue King Brown is known for its high-energy live shows. Its latest CD, Worldwize, Part 1 (North & South) was released last year.

With a rooted sense of funk, soul, and Afrobeat, Los Angeles’ Orgone seamlessly slides through multiple styles at every performance. The original 5-member band released its debut CD in 2002.
Singer Fanny Franklin joined the group after the band was floored seeing her perform with Dakah, the 30-piece hip hop orchestra. Their first recording together, a cover of Funky Nassau, became a DJ fave worldwide.

Gaining worldwide recognition for their raw studio recordings and exciting live sets led to the release of The Killion Floor, an album of hard-hitting Afro-soul and funk. While enjoying comparisons to classic acts like War and Mandrill, or modern funk staples like Sharon Jones or Breakestra, Orgone is a group like no other.

Advance tickets are $18 and are available online or in person at the Jazz Winnipeg office, 007-100 Arthur St., by phone at 989-4656.

For only $75 you can see Blue King Brown and Orgone along with nearly 40 other Club Series shows just by flashing your pass!

The Lost Fingers

The 2011 TD Winnipeg International Jazz Festival presents:
Tuesday, June 21 · 8:00 pm - 10:30 pm
West End Cultural Centre
586 Ellice Ave.

Advance tickets are $25 and are available online at Jazz Winnipeg, by phone at 989-4656, or in person at the Jazz Winnipeg office, 007-100 Arthur St.

In 1928, at the young age of 18, Django Reinhardt lost the use of two fingers in a caravan accident. Reinhardt developed a unique, jazz-inspired style of playing the guitar and became one of the world’s most influential musicians.

In 2006 guitar virtuosos Byron Mikaloff and Christian Roberge met jazz bassist Alex Morisette at the Quebec Conservatory of Music and formed the trio The Lost Fingers.

In 2008 the group created an ingenious tribute to the music they grew up on in the ’80s, mixed with the music of Reinhardt, with the album Lost in the ’80s
The trio’s live shows were in high demand thanks to the combination of great musicianship, their charming sense of humour, and their trademark colourful suits.
The 2009 Montreal International Jazz Festival had no hesitation when selecting the group as the festival’s closing performers. The trio has also been showcased at the Calgary Stampede and the Vancouver Winter Olympic

Grant Park in the Travel Alcove

Living the Dream in Europe: Our RV Travels and Experiences in Europe is a personal sharing of the travels and experiences Linda and Paul Leonard encountered while
RVing in Europe.

It covers planning, costs, and accommodations complete with one chapter of
colour photos and another about overcoming physical disabilities while undertaking this type of travel.

Linda and Paul live in Grand Marais, Manitoba during the summer and in Zihuatanejo, Mexico in the winter. Both retired teachers from Winnipeg, they have four grown children and three grandchildren.

They spent six years RVing and traveling throughout Mexico, an experience recounted in Linda's first book, Living the Dream in Mexico.
