Glen Johnson: Artistic Licence Bureau

Platform: Centre for Photographic + Digital Arts
121-100 Arthur St.
Performative installation, Artistic Licence Bureau, by Glen Johnson
Opening Reception: Thursday, August 4 at 7:00 pm
Refreshments will be served.

In a parody of the bureaucratization of the art world Johnson has created an office where artistic licences are dispensed.

Visitors to the Artistic Licence Bureau will be able to experience all the fun that comes with a trip to a government office: waiting in line, filling forms and having an unflattering photo taken in order to apply for a provisional Artistic Licence to have proof that they are not dilettantes but actual artists.

Glen Johnson has written brochures, novellas, and insertions. His performances have been performed at The National Gallery of Canada (2008), the University of Winnipeg's Gallery 1C03 (2007), Winnipeg Art Gallery (2006), Mount Saint Vincent University (2005), PLATFORM, Winnipeg (2005), aceartinc (2009, 2005, 2003), and The Annex (2004).

Lanterns for Peace 2011

Every August 6, citizens in thousands of communities around the world commemorate the 1945 nuclear attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki and rededicate themselves to the cause of peace and disarmament.

In Winnipeg, a Lanterns for Peace Ceremony is conducted by Peace Alliance Winnipeg, Project Peacemakers and the Manitoba Japanese Canadians Association.

Please join with us in commemorating the victims of this horrible attack and help strengthen the international movement to abolish nuclear weapons.

7:30 pm – Come to Memorial Park and make paper cranes and lanterns.
All materials are provided free of charge.
8:30 pm – A program of speakers and music commences
9:15 pm – We will launch our lanterns in the fountain at Memorial Park

Rosalie Favell: Facing the Camera
Peter Morin: Circle
Friday July 29 – Saturday October 1, 2011

Facing the Camera (2008-present) is a collection of portraits of Indigenous artists and curators. Inspired by the realization that there was no collective document of this group, Rosalie Favell turns the lens towards her colleagues who make up contemporary Aboriginal art communities.
This series extends to international Indigenous artists and curators from the United States, Australia and New Zealand.

Rosalie Favell is a photo-based artist born and raised in Winnipeg. Drawing inspiration from her family history and Métis (Cree/English) heritage, she uses a variety of sources, ranging from pop culture to family albums, to present a complex self-portrait of her experiences as a contemporary Aboriginal woman. Her work has appeared in numerous solo and group exhibitions in national and international venues.

The Art is Ceremony, in cities, in towns, in villages, in hearts. The Art is a method to engage with our breath.

Peter Morin, of the Tahltan Nation of northern British Columbia, is a Victoria-based visual and performance artist. His ideas about museums and their transformation through indigenous ways of knowing began in his cousin's cabin, where visits with friends, relatives, and elders offered him a gradual understanding of Tahltan history and how it can be carried over the land and into urban spaces.

Heidi Phillips: Mysteries of Light

Winnipeg Cinematheque
Friday, July 29 · 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm

Heidi Phillips sifts and searches through old films and found footage, lifting imagery and sound to recycle into her own layered and loosely structured narrative works.

These found-footage and hand-processed films entice the viewer into an alternate reality where sailboats have character and disembodied arms have hope.

Mysteries of Light is a retrospective look at Winnipeg filmmaker Heidi Phillips’ career in conjunction with her recent award, the Manitoba Film Hothouse Award for Creative Development. This award, designed to provide recognition to the depth of local directing talent, is funded by the Province of Manitoba.

Film Selections includes:
Tribute to Scissors (1999, 3:20 min.)
Isolating Landscapes (2007, 5:00 min.)
Discovering Composition in Art (2008, 2:00 min.)
The Last Harvest (2010, 6:00 min.)
Skydive (2011, 5:00 min.)

The program will conclude with the premiere of Phillips’ latest film series based on 8mm found footage bought from “Klass ‘A’ Auctions” in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

Die Roten Punkte

Die Roten Punkte - KUNST ROCK North American Tour
Fans of Spinal Tap and Flight of The Conchords say “Hallo” to your new favourite band.
Die Roten Punkte (The Red Dots) are Berlin's Prince and Princess of Indie Rock.

Following sell-out shows in New York, Montreal, Dublin and Edinburgh, the utterly dysfunctional siblings Otto and Astrid Rot travel to North America to unveil their eagerly anticipated third album, KUNST ROCK (ART ROCK) featuring the songs 'Burger Store Dinosaur' and 'Bananenhaus (Banana House)'.

Described as "a lipstick-smeared, tantrum-loving, sonic collision between B52s, Kraftwerk and early Ramones", Die Roten Punkte are truly unique.
Their songs are ridiculously infectious and their live show is one of the most irreverent and hilarious gigs you are ever likely to see.

Erik Olin Wright

Envisioning Real Utopias
Wednesday, July 27 · 7:30 pm - 10:30 pm
Mondragon Bookstore
Join us for a discussion and book launch with activist and professor Erik Olin Wright.

Rising inequality of income and power, along with recent convulsions in the finance sector, have made the search for alternatives to unbridled capitalism more urgent than ever.

Erik Olin Wright’s major new work is a comprehensive assault on contemporary social theory. A systematic reconstruction of the core values and feasible goals for Left theorists and political actors, Envisioning Real Utopias lays the foundations for a set of concrete, emancipatory alternatives to the capitalist system.

Hot Weather & Dogs

With the temperature soaring to over 30˚ C, it is vital that pet owners be aware of how extreme heat can affect their pets.

Leaving your dog locked inside a hot vehicle can be fatal.
Even when parked in the shade, with the windows cracked, temperatures inside a vehicle can soar to over 50˚ C in minutes.  Heat this extreme can cause irreparable brain damage and eventual death to a dog as they are not able to cool themselves quickly enough through panting.

During a heat wave, always leave your dog at home in a cool place with lots of water.
If you must leave your dog outdoors, make sure he or she has a sufficient dog house for shelter with a large bowl of ice and water inside.

In addition, follow these tips to keep your pet safe this summer:
Keep outdoor activity to a minimum during the hottest parts of the day, going for walks only in the early mornings or evenings.

Remember that asphalt can get very hot and burn your pet’s paws.

Pay special attention to older dogs, short-nosed dogs and those with thick coats as they will be most affected by the heat.

Don’t take your pet with you to the beach in the middle of a hot day.

Heat-Beating Tips

If possible, stay out of the sun. When in the sun, wear sunscreen (at least SPF 15) and a hat to protect your face and head.

Use an air conditioner if you have one. Set the thermostat no lower than 78º F.

If you do not have an air conditioner, keep rooms well-ventilated with open windows and fans. Consider going to a public pool, air-conditioned store, mall, movie theater or cooling center.

Fans work best at night, when they can bring in cooler air from outside.

Make an effort to check on your neighbors during a heat wave, especially if they are people with special needs. Many older people live alone and could suffer unnecessarily in the heat because they are isolated.

Seniors and others who may be sensitive to extreme heat should contact friends, neighbors or relatives at least twice a day during a heat wave.

Drink fluids – particularly water – even if you do not feel thirsty. Avoid beverages containing alcohol, caffeine or high amounts of sugar.

Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose clothing that covers as much of your skin as possible.

Never leave children, pets or those who require special care in a parked car during periods of intense summer heat.

Avoid strenuous activity, especially during the sun’s peak hours – 11 am to 4 pm.
If you must engage in strenuous activity, do it during the coolest part of the day, usually in the morning between 4 am and 7 am.

Cool showers or baths may be helpful, but avoid extreme temperature changes.
Never take a shower immediately after becoming overheated – extreme temperature changes may make you ill, nauseated or dizzy.

*People with heart, kidney or liver disease, or on fluid restricted diets should check with their doctors before increasing fluid intake.

Compassion at the Grocery Store

Unless the eggs you buy are labelled “Free Run”, “Free Range”, or “Certified Organic” you are unwittingly supporting cruelty to animals.

Ninety-eight percent of Canada’s 26-million laying hens are confined in small wire cages which hold four or more birds each, and give each hen less space than a standard piece of paper. The birds cannot even fully extend their wings.

Every natural instinct of the hen is thwarted, leading to a range of behavioural vices that include pecking out her own feathers and cannibalizing her cage mates.

After enduring this misery for a year or more, the hen’s productivity wanes and she is considered “spent”.

Battery cages are considered so cruel the European Union is banning them.

Manitoba is leading the country in installing furnished cages for laying hens.
By year end, over 42,000 laying hens will be housed in cages which offer them more space to move about, and furnishings that enable hens to express their natural behaviours like perching, scratching and laying their eggs in a private nesting area.

Free-run eggs come from hens who run free indoors and lay their eggs in fabricated nests and are the most widely available cage-free eggs in Manitoba.

Free-range eggs come from hens who have access to the outdoors for part of the day.

‘Organic’ alone on the label without ‘certified’ is no assurance of cage-free production.

If your grocery store doesn't offer cage-free eggs, talk to the manager… or switch stores!

You can find humanely raised eggs at many smaller grocers, and even at some Safeway and Superstore locations.

Here is a list of several locations:

Crampton’s Market, 1765 Waverley St.
Eatit.ca, 603 Wall Street
Fresh Option Organic Delivery, 1338 Clifton St.
Frigs Natural Meats & More, 3515 Main St.
Organza Market, 230 Osborne St.
La Grotta Mediterranean Market, 1360 Taylor Ave.
Foodfare, 905 Portage Ave.
(one of many locations)

Have you had an Adventure in Time lately?
Welcome to MARY ROSE

Teaching Shakespeare 2
Starring Keir Cutler

Written and performed by Keir Cutler, the funniest monologue from the award-winning Teaching Shakespeare Trilogy returns. Last seen in Winnipeg in 2002.

“Keir Cutler struck gold with his character of a college teacher whose fascination with Shakespeare, mixed with his own inability to conduct a half-decent class.” (EYE Toronto)

ONEymoon

The audience joins Caroline as her family and friends on her unusual wedding day and follow along on her honeymoon for one. Filled with zany wit, improv, dance and song, Caroline finds that even a long-term relationship with herself has its pitfalls.
