Lend Your Leg on April 4

On April 4 Lend Your Leg is asking private companies, celebrities and politicians to join citizens around the world who will be rolling up their pant leg to stand with survivors and declare with one voice: NO MORE LANDMINES.

Long after wars end some weapons remain a lurking threat to civilians.
Landmines are weapons that wait underground for decades, maiming and killing children, farmers and everyday citizens.

In 2010 there were 4,200 victims of landmines - over 11 people a day.

Last year in Colombia a small group of citizens rolled up their pant leg in a gesture of solidarity with landmine survivors. What began as a grassroots campaign soon gained support from celebrities, NGOs and government officials, including Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos.

On April 4, the International Day for Mine Awareness, private companies unveiled billboards of their logos rolled up in support of the cause, while students, teachers, workers and professionals rolled up their pant leg to declare to the world NO MORE LANDMINES!

This year, the Lend Your Leg campaign is going global.

The International Campaign to Ban Landmines and the United Nations Mine Action Team are partnering with FundaciĆ³n Arcangeles to mobilize  organizations in at least 138 countries to “Lend their Leg.”

Eating Ourselves Crazy

Many of us rely on foods to soothe, comfort and provide relief. The foods we choose actually exacerbate our stress, putting us at risk of falling into the emotional-eating cycle.

Eating Ourselves Crazy will arm you with information on how our brain, hormones and moods are key players in our eating habits.  Overcome emotional-eating through foods and lifestyle practices that will enhance your moods, mental stamina and quality of life while you lose weight.

Hard Choices: Financial Exclusion, Fringe Banks and Poverty in Urban Canada

When low-income city dwellers lack access to mainstream banking services, many end up turning to ‘fringe banks,’ such as cheque-cashers and pawnshops, for some or all of their financial transactions.

Hard Choices thoroughly integrates economic and social data on consumer choice, bank behaviour, and government policy.

Buckland demonstrates why the current two-tier system of banking is becoming increasingly dysfunctional, especially in the context of new credit products that aggravate income inequality and stifle local economic growth.

Jerry Buckland is a professor at Menno Simons College at the Canadian Mennonite University, and affiliated with the University of Winnipeg.

Sierra Dean: A Secret McQueen Novel

April 3, 7:00 pm in the Atrium
Something Secret This Way Comes: A Secret McQueen Novel.

Abandoned at birth by her werewolf mother, hired as a teen by the vampire council of New York City to kill rogues, Secret is a part of both worlds, but belongs to neither.
At twenty-two, she's carved out as close a normal life as a bounty hunter can.
When an enemy from her past returns, she is forced to call on every ounce of her mixed heritage to save herself, and everyone else in the city she calls home.

As if their fate wasn’t enough, there’s Lucas Rain, King of the East coast werewolves,
who believes he and Secret are fated to be together.
Secret feels a connection with Desmond, Lucas’s second-in-command.

Sierra Dean is a reformed historian. Born and raised in the Canadian prairies, Sierra indulges her less global interests: drinking too much tea and writing urban fantasy.

SAVE OSBORNE HOUSE

Friday, March 23, 5:00 pm
City Hall, 510 Main St.

WE DEMAND THAT WINNIPEG AWARD OSBORNE HOUSE THE FUNDS THEY NEED.

Join us for a rally in support of Osborne House, a safe-house for women and children
who are victims of domestic violence.

Osborne House offers food, shelter, counselling and hope for the city's most vulnerable.
Due to a 75% decrease in private donations over the past years and a steady increase in the community's need for Osborne House, the safe-house is in dire need of support from the municipal government.

On March 15, Osborne House attended City Council requesting $450,000 in annual funding.
This request was denied by council with the reason that the request came at the last minute and was too expensive.
Barbara Judt, CEO of Osborne House, has documented communications with the City of Winnipeg dating back six months.

On Tuesday, March 20 Osborne House spoke to have the City's decision rescinded.
This request was not only denied, but completely ignored.
Not a single question about Barbara's proposal was asked.

At Tuesday's hearing, Councillor Fielding, who spoke in support of the budget,
claimed that public safety is one of the key priorities of this years budget.
Clearly he does not consider women and children an essential part of this priority.

Because their funding request was denied Osborne House will be forced to turn down women and children who need safety.

Women and children are at greater risk of physical, sexual and emotional violence;
they are at a greater risk of homelessness.

Women and children are at greater risk of death.

Neotropical Migratory Bird Exhibit

Neotropical Migratory Bird exhibit on March 25 at 1:30 pm.

The exhibit re-creates a tropical mangrove wetland. It features a rare collection
of 22 life-size bird carvings by the Skeete family that was donated by the
Graeme Hall Nature Sanctuary in Barbados.

This unique collection shows familiar migratory birds from Canada sharing an exotic mangrove wetland with resident Caribbean birds.

Visitors will be invited to follow Wally, the Yellow Warbler, on his annual migration from Oak Hammock Marsh to the south. Arriving at Wally's destination, visitors will use a viewing blind, binoculars, and interpretive signs to search for Wally among the mangroves that he shares with a variety of herons, egrets, and other resident Caribbean birds.

"We were overwhelmed when Peter Allard and the Allard Family agreed to sponsor the creation of an exhibit that would not only showcase the beauty of these carvings," said Michele Kading, the Head of Interpretation at OHMIC.

The new exhibit will help visitors realize the critical importance of Caribbean wetlands.

****
The first goose of the year was seen at Oak Hammock Marsh on March 11 at 11:45 am.

The person guessing the closest date and time of the arrival wins a family membership to the Interpretive Centre as well as a cute and cuddly plush Canada goose.
The winner for this year's contest is Sophia Schreckenbach from Winnipeg.

The arrival of the geese is a sure sign that spring is on its way!!

The annual bird migration is triggered by environmental factors, primarily the changes in the day length. These changes are also related to hormonal changes in the birds during the migration period called Zugunruhe, a German word meaning migratory restlessness, when many birds display higher activity as well as physiological changes such as increased fat deposition in preparation for the long flight ahead.

The Oak Hammock Marsh Interpretive Centre is located 20 minutes north of Winnipeg on highway 67 between highways #7 and #8. For more information call 467-3300.

Jordan Miller: Finding Home, Searching Self

Jordan Miller's Solo Exhibition
The Piano Nobile Gallery, 555 Main Street, 2nd floor
Reception: March 26, 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm o
Open to general public
FREE
Music by Dave Swiecicki & Scott Hinkson
Open Feb 28 - May 6 to ticket holders
or by appt. with Justin, curator: 221-5446 ($20/hr)

Finding Home, Searching Self began as a journey of change, growth, and rebirth.

In 31 years, I moved 21 times and lived in five communities and eight Winnipeg neighborhoods.  In 2011, after living in Winnipeg for 13 years, I purchased my first home.  I feel like I found my place deep within downtown, drawn in by the Exchange District's historic buildings, active night-life, artistic hub, and energy.

Finding Home, took eight months to produce, the same number of months it took to purchase my true “home” and the number of different homes I have lived in, in Winnipeg.

This exhibition led me to discover what I truly wanted in a home. Each step transformed the artworks into something new, similar to my journey to discover a home.  As 2011 ended, I found home for the first time, in my city, with my art.

Jordan Leigh Miller graduated from the University of Manitoba's School of Art with a BFA (honours) in 2002 and from the University of Winnipeg's Arts and Cultural Management program in 2008.
She is the director and co-owner of cre8ery gallery.  In 2010, Jordan exhibited 364 pieces in an exhibition called “Life Structures and Other Personalities”. In 2011, Jordan won the 35th Annual Woman of Distinction for the Arts Award.

Demonstrate at Circus Mondo in Winnipeg

Main entrance MTS Centre, Portage & Donald
March 30 - 5:30 - 7:30 pm
March 31 - 1:30 - 3:30 pm

Circus Mondo from Montreal is at MTS Centre for two days.

Bears, elephants, tigers, and other animals do not voluntarily ride bicycles,
stand on their heads, balance on balls, or jump through rings of fire.
They don't perform these and other difficult tricks because they want to,
they perform them because they're afraid of what will happen if they don't.

For animals in circuses, there is no such thing as "positive reinforcement",
only varying degrees of punishment and deprivation.

To force them to perform these meaningless and physically uncomfortable tricks,
trainers use whips, tight collars, muzzles, electric prods, bullhooks,
and other painful tools of the trade.

About Canada: Disability Rights

Through examing education, telecommunications, transportation, employment and health care, Stienstra explores the landscape of disability rights in Canada and finds that Canadians with disabilities still experience barriers in obtaining their human rights.

Stienstra contends that achieving disability rights is possible through universal design, disability supports, social and economic supports and belonging - in short, through foundational social transformation of Canadian society.

Deborah Stienstra is Professor in Disability Studies at the University of Manitoba. She has worked with national organizations. She is co-editor of Making Equality: History of Advocacy and Persons with Disabilities in Canada and the lead author of Women with Disabilities: Accessing Trade.
