International Human Rights Day & Thea's Diner in Morris l BTPRSM Fundraising Quilt Raffle and Christmas Party and Photos with Santa l December Makers Market l Clothe the City l Literary Pub Quiz l LITE: Christmas Hampers and Gala

International Human Rights Day  December 10, 5:00 pm until 6:00 pm
Manitoba Legislative Building, 450 Broadway

We are accepting sign-ons until December 1. Please email commitments

The harsh lessons of history have taught us that a society bent on legislating public dress code is one which creates intolerance and hate.
The Quebec Provincial Government has proposed legislation that will do precisely that: tell Canadians what they can and cannot wear in the name of uniformity.

Bill 60 would impact those receiving services.
Women wearing a niqab requiring medical treatment could be denied healthcare.
Children in day care could be denied meals according to their religious beliefs.
The impact of the proposed Charter of Values quite clearly has ramifications on inalienable rights of Canadians that are neither understood, nor acceptable to the majority of Quebecers or Canadians.

Let us declare that we Canadians value human rights and diversity in accordance with religious and cultural traditions.

And here in Manitoba…

Thea's Diner, located at 133 Main Street in Morris, has been receiving racist threats.
Thea serves Canadian, Caribbean and American, Vegan and vegetarian menus.
Breakfast - lunch - dinner - coffee - drinks
Reservations - take out - delivery - catering - waiter service
They have received excellent comments on their food and service.
Apparently, for some in Morris, that isn't enough.

Lighthouse Mission, 669 Main St.
Donations can be dropped off directly on Dec. 8.
To schedule a clothing pick-up or drop-off, call 204-899-8584.

The Clothe the City committee is looking for gently-used winter clothing and also blankets. Socks and underwear must be new. All donations should be washed and, preferably, labelled.

If people don’t have clothing to donate, they can always consider donating a gift certificate or cash so we can use those towards purchasing new underwear and socks, or they can donate food as well, Ashley Wood said, noting that there will be a free hot meal at the event.  It’s great because people share a lot. They come and take what they need, but they often leave behind things they don’t need.

LITE (Local Investment Toward Employment) began in 1994 when it was noticed Neechi Foods Co-op lost business during the holidays. As hampers were distributed, sales dropped. LITE buys products from inner-city businesses, and then gives those products to Winnipeg hamper programs, thus doubling the program’s impact.

LITE purchases products from Neechi, the Spence Neighbourhood Association’s Youth Crew, the Native Women’s Transition Centre and the Food Connections Project at Wolseley Family Place.  Executive director Anne Lindsey said of the latter two: It’s mainly women who are getting trained on kitchen protocol and food handling… they provide important skills, which they can then add to their resume to help them find work.

mailed to LITE, 203-675 Main Street, Winnipeg, MB, R2W 3N5
For more information call LITE at (204) 942-8578 or email Anne

LITE offers five Hamper packages, each aimed at families of two to five: a dry goods package, a canned goods package, a Christmas dinner package, a Christmas baking package and a full Christmas Hamper.

Prairie Theatre Exchange: Social Studies by Trish Cooper
Preview - November 20   l   November 21 - December 08
World Premiere   TICKETS

When Jackie moves back, she thought her biggest problem would be readjusting to a smaller bed. She didn’t realize her mother had given that bed to a Sudanese refugee.  But the former “Lost Boy” is not all that he seems, and the family learns about making assumptions.
Cultural differences, language barriers, and the self-conscious earnestness of the "well-meaning" combine to deliver a scathingly comic look at Canadian values.

Trish has a fabulous sense of character and a keen ear.  She’s very funny, and she’s written a play that is a very funny, yet insightful, look at the new Canada. – Robert Metcalfe

All nine-year-old Ralphie wants for Christmas is a Red Ryder B.B. gun “with a compass and this thing which tells time built right into the stock.”

A Christmas Story is a nostalgic look at childhood that will delight kids of all ages.

A Calgary organization called Seniors Secret Service has been providing gifts to isolated seniors at Christmas and on their birthday for the past 28 years. Unfortunately many of their Corporate and individual sponsors are choosing to sponsor fewer seniors this year, a move some have attributed to generous financial contributions during the flood crisis.  They are seeking help to ensure they meet the needs of their community.

In Conversation with Joe Clark and signing How We Lead: Canada in a Century of Change

The unique combination of Canada’s success at home as a diverse society and its reputation internationally as a sympathetic and respected partner constitute national assets that are at least as valuable as its natural resources.  Assets have no value if Canadians don’t recognize or use them, or worse, if they waste them.

Joe Clark was elected in 1979 as Canada’s sixteenth and youngest prime minister. During the Mulroney government, he served as minister of external affairs from 1984 to 1991, and as minister responsible for constitutional affairs from 1991 to 1993. He was elected again to the House of Commons in 2000. He now works as a political and business consultant in Ottawa.
