About a year ago I posted about Manitoba Association of Women's Shelters (MAWS) and their Annual General Meeting.  Their topic was Family Violence Prevention.

MAWS was created to provide: support to member shelters; increased negotiating abilities with funders; shared information and resources; increased public awareness, training of staff and improved services for clients.

Whether there should be yet another Missing Women Inquiry has been in the news.

Globe and Mail article Posturing is the only reason for a missing women inquiry by Jeffrey Simpson, published on August 27, 2014, gave more history behind this issue.

In Simpson's article:

Earlier this year, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police produced a report into missing and murdered aboriginal women going back to 1980.

Among the findings were that men committed most of the crimes against women, that the criminals knew their victims, that many had previous brushes with the law, and that 92 per cent of cases involved spouses, other family members, acquaintances or those who had had intimate relations with the women.

The idea that some with certain political agendas might espouse – that aboriginal women are largely being struck down by non-aboriginal strangers – is largely false.

…the RCMP reported that since 1980, “the number of aboriginal female victims of homicide has remained relatively constant.” There were 33 female aboriginal homicides in 1981 and 36 in 2012, the latter coming after a large jump in the female aboriginal population.

On these numbers, therefore, there is no epidemic of killing of aboriginal women, although obviously each death is a tragedy and a crime. The rate for police solving homicides is almost the same for aboriginal and non-aboriginal women.

Public inquiries cost a lot of money.
That a forty-first report would do any good is unlikely.
Maybe that money would be better spent on funding organizations that help women.
Maybe the politicians are just being politicians.

Globe and Mail article Are native leaders ready to be part of the solution?
by Gary Mason, published on August 29, 2014, gives more information.
Yes, where are the native leaders?

Connecting Canada

One World Connected is the theme that the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) chose for this year’s World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD).

Being connected with oneself, with others, and a community is critical to one’s well being.  Building connections is one of the pillars of suicide prevention, intervention and postvention.

On September 10 Canadians will gather to show their support for suicide prevention, to remember and celebrate the lives those who have died, comfort those who grieve and strengthen our connection with each other.  During WSPD we will remember that we are all connected to each other.

We invite everyone to find a way of connecting to WSPD to shine a light on this important issue, sending a message to those who are despairing, connection to those who are grieving and reminding us all that there is help, hope and people who care.

On September 10 CASP and Klinic will launch a website to help workplaces support suicide prevention; a resource to help people who might receive a call from someone who in distress.

This is also the theme for this year’s virtual suicide prevention conference, November 19 - 21, 2014.  To learn more about the virtual suicide prevention conference.

As many as 71,300 people are living with HIV/AIDS in Canada. Over one quarter of them don’t even know. There is no cure and no vaccines to prevent new infections. When you have HIV/AIDS, life gets a lot harder. You can help.
This is a national awareness and fundraising event. Funds raised support direct programs and services for Canadians living with HIV/AIDS in their communities.

Katherine Sinclair was shocked to learn that Lake Winnipeg was named the most threatened lake of 2013 by Global Nature Fund. She decided to take action and organized the Lake Winnipeg Water Walk.  The walkers left from Norway House on July 12 on a 1,032 km trek around Lake Winnipeg.  The group stopped in lakeside communities to share their message.
Sinclair says threats to the lake impact all Manitobans: In 10 years the world’s 10th-largest fresh water lake is no longer going to be able to carry life anymore.

We can see this anywhere, at any time, so people should be on the lookout, especially if they are using lake water or other surface water for drinking, and they should always be wary of the algae blooms, said University of Winnipeg professor Eva Pip.  The taps were turned off in Toledo, Ohio for more than 400,000 people over fear of algae blooms.

Boiling algae-affected water doesn't make it safe and chlorine makes it worse.  Manitoba has had excessive levels of green blue algae.  Shoal Lake is monitored carefully but people at cottages should be extra careful.

Petitioning Stephen Harper
Bring 100 Palestinian Children to Canada for Desperately Needed Medical Attention

Petition by Lauren Lowe, Hamilton, Canada

Many Canadians have been watching in helpless horror the unfolding of events in Gaza and the unfathomable suffering endured by the children who are trying to survive there.
We respectfully urge all Canadian hospitals to add their names to the list of Ontario Hospitals who have already reached out in compassion to offer treatment to Palestinian children who desperately need help.

In April 2011 Manitoba experienced a 1-in-350-year flood. To save urban centres, unprecedented water levels were diverted to Lake St. Martin. First Nation communities in the area were swamped, and 2100 people forced from their homes for what they thought would be just a few weeks. But weeks stretched into years…

The people interviewed are devastated, as they struggle with feelings of isolation, loneliness and dejection:
We’ve lost more than just houses. Our family structures are being broken down, our community structure is broken down. When you take somebody’s home, you bring devastation to their lives. You take their roots. You take their grounding.

They sent a constable here with a piece of paper, telling me I had to go… They cut off water, they cut off septic. We were never given a choice to stay, or a choice to stand and fight. It’s like ‘you gotta go, and you gotta go now.’

People think we get everything for nothing… If only they could see.
