Outside Joke is teaming up with Shakespeare In The Ruins for a very exciting, first-time collaboration, pairing the classic and heavily structured works of William Shakespeare with the young and spontaneous form of improvisation.
Weaving together scenes and soliloquies from Shakespeare’s classics, singing songs created from the text – something Shakespeare in the Ruins is known for – concluding with an improvised musical using well-loved tropes of the Bard to shape our story.

Outside Joke is a six member company from Winnipeg, Manitoba who perform a completely improvised musical. "One suggestion, one story - with harmonies!" (Kelly Stifora, CBC)

Plug In Institute of Contemporary Art is pleased to present Hospital Hallway, a performance by award-winning, Winnipeg-based artist Sarah Anne Johnson.

Hospital Hallway is a continuation of themes explored in Johnson’s immersive installation House on Fire and performance Dancing with The Doctor, drawing on her grandmother’s experience as an unwitting participant in the infamous MK-ULTRA mind-controlling drug experiments of the 1950s ultimately linked to the CIA.
The artist has designed an elaborate enclosed set that positions audiences above her, circling the stage like theatre-in-the-round. Johnson takes the role of her grandmother as a patient pushed into a nightmarish ‘treatment’.
Hospital Hallway encompasses a larger video and installation project.

First Fridays THROB OFF!  Game & Photo Exhibit + Character performances
Time: 5-9pm
Large classroom, 400-245 McDermot Ave, Winnipeg
Free

Throb Off!, created by Sarah London and Solmund MacPherson, is a satirical take on the hit 80s board game Heartthrob. It was created for Rowan Sparling’s 18th birthday, and was a smash hit. It was revitalized when the character portraits featured in the game caught Thomas Sparling’s eye, prompting the proposal of a photo show.
That idea grew until it became what it is today, with select portraits taken by Solmund MacPherson being put on display alongside performances by some of the beautiful people featured in the game, copies of which will also be available to play or purchase.
Dress up in your finest 80s attire and be prepared to have a good time.
See the photos, meet the characters, and play the game.

April 2, Doors 7 / Show 8 PM - 11:30 PM
The Park Theatre, 698 Osborne Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba R3L 2B9
Tickets $20 in advance at The Park Theatre, Music Trader and online

We’ve had the pleasure of having The Zolas in the room a couple times before, and it’s always a great time. Joining them will be Toronto's Fast Romantics.

Anyone who caught on to the slow-burn success of 2012’s desolately hook-laden Ancient Mars could sense that something in The Zolas was threatening to bubble over.
Original members Tom Dobrzanski and Zach Gray have been joined by another longtime duo Cody Hiles and DJ Abell and this is the first album they’ve completely self-produced. The band dove headlong into vibrant, experimental pop, stirring modern production into the influences that surrounded them as kids growing up in the ‘90s.

Javelin’s ten songs, among the most confidently and imaginatively arranged Jordan Klassen has ever recorded, engage the past, reassess recollections and impressions, turn failures not into successes but lessons for the future. Klassen’s vocals remain calm, perhaps even contented, as he delivers the chorus like a fanfare.

MAWA Mentoring Artists for Women's Art, 611 Main Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba R2W 0J7

CraftED :: Janet Morton
CraftED-thinking through craft, a series of artist talks interested in bringing the larger context of contemporary craft to Winnipeg.

MCC, in partnership with MAWA, is excited to bring Janet Morton to Winnipeg.
Since 1992 Morton has used knitting and sewing symbolically in her work as blatant low-tech metaphors. By using stereotypically domestic techniques and recycled materials, Morton explores issues of consumption and how “value” is assigned to objects and time investment.
