Artspace, 100 Arthur Street

Join us for an architectural tour of the Gault Building (Artspace), including a visit to the roof. Access to the roof requires the ability to climb stairs. There is a lift to the lobby.

The Gault Building is a good example of a Richardsonian Romanesque-style warehouse. The substantial masonry structure, designed by George Browne to accommodate the western expansion of Montreal dry goods wholesaler A.F. Gault and Co., was among the first large warehouses built in response to Winnipeg's rise as a regional distribution centre. Increased business due to an immigration boom soon prompted the firm to expand its premises upward by two floors and to the south with a six-storey annex.

The Art of Recovery   2015, New Zealand, Director, Peter Young   85 minutes
After a massive earthquake shakes Christchurch city to its foundations, amid the ruins and continuing aftershocks a vibrant community-led movement emerges, transforming the urban wasteland of the central city into a giant canvas for people to express their responses to the earthquakes and their hopes for the city.

Downtown has become a frontier of creativity where new ideas flourish. From simple acts of kindness to large-scale works of art, each is a gift to a recovering city. Projects like Gap Filler’s Dance-O-mat and Pallet Pavilion, the profusion of street art and Peter Majendie’s 185 Empty Chairs Memorial have become iconic symbols of the grassroots urban movement and provide sharp contrast to central Government’s big business, corporate driven approach to the rebuild of the city. Soon, a new city will arise, but whose city will it be?

Architecture+Film series: The Integral Man   Director: Joseph Clement  2016, Canada,
He decided against Frank Gehry, considered Rem Koolhaas and ultimately chose two young architects (Shim-Sutcliffe Architects) that would come to change contemporary architecture.

Jim Stewart is the most published mathematician since Euclid, a concert level violinist, calculus professor, philanthropist, and gay rights activist. It took almost ten years to realize his dream, Integral House, which was completed in 2009. Designed around a stunning internal concert hall, it was hailed as a masterpiece by some of the greatest architecture and design critics in the world. Integral House, like Jim, was unlike anything else. Now confronting his inability to play violin as arthritis cripples his hands, Jim boldly faces his declining health, jumping head long into the role of impresario. As unexpected events unfold, Jim is left to make some of the most difficult decisions of his life.

Family-friendly Improv Every Second Friday of the Month!
The Crosseyed Rascals will perform two sets each night; a longer show with an intermission, and a shorter set of quick handles to end each night.
What is improvisational theatre, or Improv? Well, take a bunch of talented actors with a basic story outline, add input from the audience, toss in a pinch of humour, throw in the anticipation of the unknown, shake that up and spill it onto a stage. That's Improv.
Add a family friendly atmosphere and you've got The Crosseyed Rascals.

Silence is Violence #WinnipegAgainstFascism - a community conversation and support event, hosted by Black Space Winnipeg.

This past weekend caused uproar and civil turmoil in Charlottesville, Virginia. Since then, white nationalists, and neo-nazi supremacists have been declaring their rage across the US and in Canada. These recent actions come as no surprise for marginalized people.

Support systems have been initiated across Winnipeg. We invite the public to come, share concerns, and suggestions for moving forward as a community. We ask folks coming to this event to show empathy, bring food and create support. We ask allies to the BIPOC community please come for 7:00 pm to ensure safe space for all participants. This is time for self care. This is time for education. For more information: blackspacewpg@gmail.com

MRG Concerts West Presents Against Me! with Bleached and The Dirty Nil

Four years ago Laura Jane Grace, the Against Me!, front woman came out as transgender; 18 months later, she released the band’s sixth album, the fiery Transgender Dysphoria Blues, an intensely personal record.

Now Against Me! is releasing their new album, Shape Shift With Me. While much has changed for Grace, guitarist James Bowman, bassist Inge Johansson and drummer Atom Willard, it’s clear that those intervening years have done wonders for creativity.

In this year of Canada's 150th birthday, Winnipeg's Polish Folk Dance Ensemble SPK "ISKRY" will be celebrating their Golden Anniversary - 50 years of performing for audiences all around the world. Since its founding in 1967 by Henryk Lorenc, its primary purpose is to preserve and showcase Polish culture and folklore through traditional song and dance.

We invited Edmonton's Polish Dance Ensemble "Lowicz" as guest performers. The performance will showcase both new works and classics that weave together the rich fabric of the Polish culture.

In addition to regularly performing at the International Polish Dance Festival since 1993, "ISKRY" has been the annual entertainment mainstay at the Warsaw-Poland Pavilion during Winnipeg's Folklorama. Some other highlights of their history include performing at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal, attending a private audience with Pope John Paul II in 1999, and joining the Winnipeg Royal Ballet in 2015 in their production of Swan Lake.

Please contact any current dancer of "ISKRY" or a member of the alumni to purchase one.

August 30 at 7 PM - 8:37 PM
Forth, 171 McDermot Ave, Winnipeg, Manitoba R3B 0S1
Free Admission /  Beer and unlimited popcorn for $5.

In Jacques Tati’s Traffic, the bumbling Monsieur Hulot, kitted out as always with tan raincoat, beaten brown hat, and umbrella, takes to Paris’s highways and byways. In this, his final outing, Hulot is employed as an auto company’s director of design, and accompanies his new product (a “camping car” outfitted with absurd gadgetry) to an auto show in Amsterdam. Naturally, the road there is paved with modern-age mishaps. This late-career delight is a masterful demonstration of the comic genius’s expert timing and sidesplitting knack for visual gags, and a bemused last look at technology run amok.
The film is screened by the Winnipeg Architecture Foundation, in partnership with Forth.
