Rally for Subsidized Housing by Right to Housing Coalition

Lack of subsidized housing is a crisis in Manitoba. There are approximately 4,600 households on the wait list for a Manitoba Housing unit. Waiting on the list can last years. With nowhere else to go, many people end up staying with friends or family, in shelters, or outside.
National Housing Day lines up with the appointment of our new premier, Heather Stefanson. As the new leadership sets its priorities, let’s make sure subsidized housing is on the agenda.

We call on Premier Stefanson to prioritize building 300 new subsidized housing units as soon as possible.
Please bring signs showing your support for subsidized housing.
We will be following all Covid-19 protocols. Please wear a mask and maintain social distancing.

It was the perfect opportunity…or so she thought. When Terri Foxworth is hired to spend a year restoring a crumbling manor house, she believes she’s hit the jackpot. She moves in with her young daughter and high hopes for the project’s success. As the restoration begins to go terribly wrong, she realizes dark forces won’t let her leave the house until its horrible secrets are revealed.
This job could very well be the death of her.

J.H. Moncrieff is the author of fifteen published dark-fiction novels. City of Ghosts won the 2018 Kindle Book Review Award for Best Horror/Suspense. She won Harlequin's international search for “the next Gillian Flynn” in 2016. Her bestselling supernatural suspense GhostWriters series has earned rave reviews. As a journalist, Moncrieff’s articles have appeared in many national and international publications.

Donna Besel grew up at West Hawk Lake and her “boreal stories” have earned national recognition. She leads workshops for students of all ages. The forests of Eastern Manitoba, where she has always lived, provide endless ideas and settings.
Lauren Carter is a writer of fiction and poetry who has lived in Manitoba since 2013. Her novel, This Has Nothing to Do with You, explored familial trauma and won the Margaret Laurence Award for Fiction. Lauren and Donna have hosted three women writers’ retreats at Falcon Trails Resort in Whiteshell Provincial Park.

Join photographer Chris Attrell and author Christine Hanlon for the virtual launch of the photograph collection Grain Elevators: Beacons of the Prairies.

On YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OhzzziVg49M

Rising above the landscape, the grain elevator heralds a time when wheat was king across the West. At their zenith, 5,758 of these prairie giants defined the economy and skyline of Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta.
Every year their numbers dwindle. Sometimes these towering signposts are all that is left of a town or hamlet once built around them. Award-winning photographer Chris Attrell captures the haunting presence of those that remain to stand guard over an ever-changing agrarian lifestyle.

Chris Attrell is the author of the bestselling book, Forgotten Saskatchewan. His work has been shown in galleries across the Prairies.
Christine Hanlon is the bestselling author of Old Winnipeg, Out of Old Manitoba Kitchens, co-author of The Manitoba Book of Everything, and curator/writer for Everything Manitoba: The Ultimate Book of Lists.

Gala for Literacy 2021

This gala event is all about supporting the literacy of men in conflict with the law.
Studies show that when individuals work on their literacy, they are less likely to re-offend. Plus, they’re better equipped to find housing, land a job or secure social services.

The money raised from this celebrity-endorsed event goes directly to our Literacy Department, and aids in our work with men on the inside and outside.
CBC humourist, Rick Mercer, is the main host, with segments hosted by former CBC Radio host, Terry MacLeod.
Katherena Vermette, our Poet Laureate for this year, will join us and read a few of her poems.
We will also give special recognition to one outstanding student and a pair of teachers.
Twin Flames, Stephen Fearing and Ashley MacIsaac will each perform for us.
And we’ll hear award-winning author Louise Penny read from a best-selling book.

The Literacy Program at the John Howard Society of Manitoba provides one-to-one assistance with reading, problem solving and mathematics in Winnipeg's Remand Centre and at several correctional facilities in the province. In pre-Covid times, we trained incarcerated men to become peer tutors. During Covid we offer instruction via Zoom.

In our Get The Story Out program, we record fathers reading stories for their children and then deliver the book to the child's parent or caregiver.

Happy Twelfth Anniversary to us!! - Margaret Ullrich

Happy Anniversary to Winnipeg is Better Than Chocolate and its readers!
Thank you for visiting, whether it's been on a weekly or occasional basis!
Also, a huge 'thank you' to those who've asked their friends to visit!

This has been a strange year, just like 2020.
Due to Covid-19 many of the events have been cancelled or postponed.
But slowly we’ve been getting back to normal.
Stay safe and well!

Over the years there have been about 512,600 visitors!
When I started this blog in 2009 and for a few years, Canada was always the number one country for visitors.
Well, a few years ago people from the United States became the top visitors.
During the past year over 25,000 Americans visited this blog.
I hope it’s meant that folks in the States are curious about what we have in Winnipeg.
Maybe when the border gates are re-opened they will come for a vacation, or at least come up to see a show or to take part in an event.
Folks in the states know that they can get a great bang for their vacation buck here.

Germany, Russia and the Ukraine are also among the top five countries.
Hope you'll soon be coming to Winnipeg to enjoy great events here, too.
The Philippines is still one of the top ten visiting countries.
I’m not surprised - Winnipeg has a large, vibrant Philippine community.
Maybe people have decided to see a few shows while visiting family and friends.

The top ten countries and their visitors are:
United States……….. 167   K
Canada……………………. 97.3 K
Germany……..…………. 63.4 K
Russia…………..………… 45.2 K
Ukraine.…………..…….. 19.9 K
France……………….……. 16   K
Unknown Region..….… 7.7  K
Philippines…………….…. 5.68 K
United Kingdom….……. 5.31 K
Netherlands.……….……. 3.27 K

Visitors from ‘Unknown Region’ are still dropping in to see what’s happening.
I don't know where these unknown visitors live.
Oh, well, I wish a hello to you, wherever you call home.

During the years there have also been visitors from Moldova, Turkey, Ireland, Australia,
Singapore, Taiwan, Argentina, Denmark, Eritrea, Italy, Finland, the Netherlands, Spain,
Macedonia (FYROM), Mexico, Afghanistan, Thailand, Slovakia, India, Bangladesh, Israel,
Malaysia, Kuwait, Greece, Kenya, Vietnam, Czech Republic, Portugal, Bulgaria, Romania,
United Arab Emirates, Pakistan, Armenia, Belarus, Namibia, Honduras, Slovenia,
Lithuania, Indonesia, Turkmenistan, Cambodia, Switzerland, Czechia, Bermuda, Portugal,
Qatar, Brazil, Egypt, Chile, Poland, Nigeria, South Africa, Iraq, Sweden, Côte d’Ivoire,
Japan, Serbia, Libya, Dominican Republic, Togo, Saudi Arabia, Albania, Hong Kong, Malta,
Seychelles, Morocco, Peru, Belarus, Cyprus and Austria.

Sometimes there has been a surge of visits from a country.
I have no idea why such surges in visits happen.
Whatever the reason, I'm so glad each of you stopped by for a look.
Thank you for taking an interest in events happening here in Winnipeg!

Usually I only post once or twice a month, especially since Covid-19 hit over 18 months ago.
I don’t post on Facebook.
Please become a subscriber to the blog Winnipeg is Better Than Chocolate.
It’s easy and FREE - just click on the ‘FOLLOW’ link under the pictures of followers and post your email address.
You can also follow Winnipeg is Better Than Chocolate by email.
Free, easy, and, I promise, your address will never be shared with anyone.
You’ll get an email when there is a new post, so you'll never miss news about an event.

I do post a link on Twitter whenever there is a new post.
If you feel more comfortable using Twitter, just click on the Twitter link '@ImTurning60' on the side bar above the archive and we’ll be able to keep in touch that way.

I do notice which posts get the most visits.
Music posts - especially those with links to websites - interest most people.
I hope you’re enjoying hearing the music from our up-and-coming musicians!
I’ll continue posting more of those, and similar, events.

Please take a moment and comment when an event or personality interests you.
Local artists do check when they’re in the media and they love the feedback.

Once again, thank you so much for visiting!
As I said when Sophie and I signed off our weekly show...
Have a great weekend. How can you miss - you're in Winnipeg!

CN 2747 Enclosure Project Capital Campaign

Help support the development of a permanent structure over this important historical asset in the community of Transcona.

The main purpose of the enclosure is to have the engine protected from the elements, vandalism, and theft. CN 2747 has been on outdoor display since 1960 and this has caused damage to the overall condition and stability of the engine. An enclosure will help to extend the lifespan of the engine from less than 10 years (as outlined in a 2017 condition assessment). The estimated construction costs are $492,942.
