McNally Robinson Booksellers Launches
hosted live in the Atrium of McNally Robinson Booksellers, Grant Park

June 3, 7 - 8 pm

Join us for the Winnipeg launch of German author Elina Penner's Nightberries, a dark modern fairytale about the enigma, Nelli Neufeld. Featuring a conversation hosted by Andrew Unger.
Available as a YouTube stream: https://youtube.com/live/FpbWqOe5hfI

The quiet youngest daughter in a noisy, tangled German Mennonite family who fled from Russia in the 1990s, Nelli seems to be coping well in a traditional marriage. But what is going on in her memory? As we follow the events on two key days in 2020, we are asked riddles about Nelli that even she might not be able to answer.

Penner was born in 1987 as a Mennonite German in the former Soviet Union and moved to Germany in 1991. She is a successful personal essayist and blogger, with many of her non-fiction pieces gathered in the 2023 collection, Migrantenmutti (Migrant Mother). Nachtbeeren was her first novel. In 2025, her second novel, Die Unbußfertigen (The Unrepentant), was released in Germany.

June 6, 7 - 8 pm

Join author Gail Perry for an illustrated talk and book signing in celebration of the launch of John D Atchison Architect: His Works & Times (Winnipeg Architecture Foundation).
Available as a YouTube stream: https://youtube.com/live/M4U8T94YeQU

From 1905 to 1923, Atchison, one of Winnipeg’s most prolific and accomplished early twentieth century architects, built the backdrop to the city. This first Atchison monograph collects and considers his life’s work in historical context, including his early influences in and around Chicago and, in later years, his design direction in California. The text is complimented by hundreds of images, including an illustrated listing of his extant works in Winnipeg and Western Canada, the American Midwest and California.

Perry (BA, LL.B) is the first heritage designation officer for the Province of Manitoba and a founder of the Winnipeg Architecture Foundation. She is a 2020 recipient of the Lieutenant Governor General’s Award for Historical Preservation and Promotion. She is active with the Manitoba Historical Society and Winnipeg Architecture Foundation.

June 10, 7 - 8 pm

Join us for an evening with acclaimed horror novelist Marcus Kliewer as he presents his new book, The Caretaker. Featuring a conversation hosted by Joanna Graham followed by a book signing. Available as a YouTube stream: https://youtube.com/live/4r2ocByMscg

A supernatural horror about a young woman who accepts a caretaking job from Craigslist, only to discover the position has consequences far greater—and more dangerous—than she ever could have imagined.

Kliewer is a writer and stop-motion animator. His debut novel We Used to Live Here began life as a serialized short story on Reddit. Film rights were snapped up by Netflix, and it was acquired by Simon & Schuster in the US for publication. He lives in Vancouver.

June 11, 7 - 8 pm

Join us for an evening with Dora Dueck as she returns to celebrate the launch of her latest book, Like a River Divides the Earth. Featuring a reading and a conversation hosted by Sue Sorensen, followed by a book signing.
Available as a YouTube stream: https://youtube.com/live/NSENwRkZa1M

Dora Dueck’s characters encounter grief or betrayal, as they quest for tenderness and connection. With compelling grace and insight, Dueck probes the things that divide us and the ways our lives are indelibly stitched together.

Dueck is the author of five books, as well as essays, stories, and poetry in a variety of journals. Honours include the McNally Robinson Book of the Year Award, the High Plains Book Award for short fiction, and winner of The Malahat Review’s novella contest. She blogs  at www.doradueck.com
