September 20 · 7:30 pm - 10:30 pm

The Pioneer continues Almond’s enthralling and adventurous series chronicling two hundred years of Canadian history.

Young Jim sets out on snowshoes to Montreal, seven hundred miles away from the Old Homestead. Driven by starvation into a back-breaking job constructing the Victoria Bridge and ensnared in a deceitful romance, Jim rejects urban life and returns to the community of pioneers. His ageing father recruits him to rally neighbours to found a school for their children and a church in Shigawake.

Paul Almond is one of Canada’s preeminent film and television directors, and he has directed and produced over 130 television dramas for the CBC, BBC, ABC and Granada Television.  He lives on the Gaspé Peninsula in Quebec and in Malibu, California.

Is international aid improving the lives of ordinary Africans or contributing to their suffering?

Drink the Bitter Root is a provocative, emotionally charged account of one writer's travels in sub-Saharan Africa. Haunted by the 1993 murder of a Somali teenager by Canadian soldiers in what became known as the Somalia affair, and long fascinated by the "dark continent," Gary Geddes decides at age 68 to make the trip.

Gary Geddes has written and edited more than 40 books and has received numerous literary awards, including the British Columbia Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Literary Excellence and Chile’s Gabriela Mistral Prize. He is the author of two bestselling travel memoirs, The Kingdom of Ten Thousand Things and Sailing Home. He lives on Thetis Island, British Columbia.
