Young Jim sets out on snowshoes to Montreal, seven hundred miles away from the Old Homestead. Driven by starvation into a back-breaking job constructing the Victoria Bridge and ensnared in a deceitful romance, Jim rejects urban life and returns to the community of pioneers. His ageing father recruits him to rally neighbours to found a school for their children and a church in Shigawake.
Paul Almond is one of Canada’s preeminent film and television directors, and he has directed and produced over 130 television dramas for the CBC, BBC, ABC and Granada Television. He lives on the Gaspé Peninsula in Quebec and in Malibu, California.
