Marbles on Portage

July 31 at 12 noon
Air Canada Window Park, Portage Avenue between Carlton Street and Hargrave Street

Marbles on Portage, by Erica Swendrowski, will soon animate Portage Avenue.

The artist sought to create a unique, playful atmosphere within Winnipeg’s historic downtown by installing 20 larger-than-life marble sculptures in planters and in the median on Portage Avenue. The 3’ and 4’6” marbles captivate the imagination of young and old alike and reveal how familiar everyday items can make life extraordinary.  The sculptures incorporate soft glowing light as well as living plants.  The diverse elements will create an atmosphere of imaginative possibilities day and night throughout all four seasons.

and Winnipeg Folk Festival Music Store

Alternative Tentacles recording artists Slim Cessna’s Auto Club are on tour to promote their 2011 release Unentitled

Jello Biafra (former Dead Kennedys frontman) describes SCAC as the country band that would be playing the bar at the end of the world.

Slim Cessna’s Auto Club have been described as engaging, riveting, sad and humorous; and has been branded with every musical description possible.
After a decade of working and living as SCAC, they have created their own genre.

The songs are thoughtfully crafted with unique arrangements, executed by superb musicianship, then fully realized through intelligent lyrics. With two of the most charismatic front men around and four accomplished musicians (Wovenhand, Delta 72, 16Horsepower), SCAC is the past, present and future of American music.

Haunting and sometimes unsettling, their music takes the best of Hank Williams, Johnny Cash and the high theatre to arrive at a sound that strikes at the heart of the listener. Philadelphia Weekly

Tim Hus and his Travelin’ Band

July 29
River City Social Club

Tickets are a suggested donation of $10 - $20
For reservations please contact Gord at 204 803 7358

Tim Hus and his Travelin’ Band will perform Canadiana roots-country and cowboy songs.

With a voice sweeter than a Husqvarna chainsaw, a wit sharper than rusty barbed wire,
and a list of songs longer than a Saskatchewan fence line, Stony Plain recording artist
Tim Hus comes at his audience like a runaway rig.

While firing off image-laden lyrics with the intensity of a western gunslinger,
Tim’s distinctive songwriting stands as a cornerstone of authentic Canadiana.

Tim Hus recently received a 2011 Canadian Music Award for Roots Artist of the Year.

Hus is hot off the trail from 12 weeks of touring with Canadian icon Stompin’ Tom Connors where he was heralded as “The best opening act Tom has had in his 45+ year career”. This is an opportunity for fans to hear Tim in a rare solo acoustic setting and hear some of the stories behind Tim’s travels and songs.

Often compared to Stompin’ Tom Connors as both share a deep love of Canada and write songs celebrating the uniqueness of Canada and its people.

Tim Hus is a Canadian and Albertan institution. Barry Hammond - Penguin Eggs Magazine
