Sagkeeng Legends (Sagkeeng Aadizookaanag): John C. Courchene’s Stories

John C. Courchene was born in Sagkeeng First Nation in 1914, where he attended the Fort Alexander Indian Residential School. His brothers took John out so that he could help them cut wood in the bush. It resulted in his “illiteracy”.  In the ways of the forest and his native language, Anishanabemowin, John was far from illiterate.

Reprinted in both English and Anishanabemowin, Sagkeeng Legends represent two pebbles where a mountain of knowledge once stood. Craig Fontaine is a researcher with the Manitoba First Nations Education Resource Centre in Winnipeg. His home community is the Sagkeeng First Nation, Treaty One, where his grandfather John C. Courchene was born.

The Politics of Knives

The poems bridge the gap between the conventional and the experimental, combining the intellectual with the visceral. The production of stories as both a defensive and offensive gesture, trouble the stability of these poetic sequences.

Jonathan Ball is the author of two previous books: Ex Machina and Clockfire. Jonathan teaches at the University of Manitoba and the University of Winnipeg.
