October 17, 7:00 pm in the Travel Alcove
Release of the CD the bronze branch/an craobh umha with mini-concert

Every purchase includes a $5.00 donation to hunger relief, a free download and a sticker!

Celebrate the release by joining her for a mini concert of Irish traditional folk songs.

Virginia’s sixty years had taken her from the east coast to a sea of prairie grass, and an interesting life - teaching at Springfield Hutterite Colony, owning McCullough’s Hardware and the Good Wool Shop, weaving rugs for galleries and making soap for Virginia’s Soap Limited. Until one summer night on PEI when she saw Gordon Belsher play the Irish bodhran drum.  She took up the bodhran and discovered sean-nós singing (Irish gaelic) and her closeted history. Her great great Grandmother came to Canada in black ‘47 during An Gorta Mór (the Irish potato famine). After selling their soap business of 25 years, she followed her passion to Ireland.

An Evening with Candace Savage
October 17, 7:30 pm in the Atrium
A Geography of Blood
Co-presented by THIN AIR.

When Candace Savage buys a house in southwestern Saskatchewan, she has no idea what awaits her. At first she revels in her encounters with the wild inhabitants. But as Savage explores further, she uncovers a story of cruelty and survival set in the still-recent past, and finds that she must reassess the story she grew up with as the daughter, granddaughter, and great-granddaughter of prairie homesteaders.
A Geography of Blood offers both a shocking new version of plains history and an unforgettable portrait of the windswept, shining country of the Cypress Hills. It is also a sequel to Savage’s Prairie: A Natural History.

Savage is a co-sponsor of a grassland restoration project and sits on the Saskatchewan board of the Nature Conservancy of Canada. In 2010, Savage was inducted as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in recognition of her scholarly and artistic achievements.
