Winnie the Bear

Mary Anne Appleby takes us on Winnie and Harry’s journey, through the story of her own family’s connection to Harry Colebourn. Appleby’s insights into the remarkable chain of events in Winnie the Bear’s life reveal the bear’s inspirational role in the creation of A. A. Milne’s Winnie-the-Pooh books.

After moving to Detroit in 1983, she completed a Master of Arts degree in clinical psychology, and has spent 27 years working in that field. Mary Anne and her family reside in the Wolseley neighbourhood in Winnipeg.  She is recipient of the Gold medal in the Canada West Non-Fiction category of the Independent Publishers' Book Awards.

The Daughter’s Way: Canadian Women’s Paternal Elegies

Tanis MacDonald investigates negotiations of female subjectivity in twentieth-century Canadian women’s elegies with a special emphasis on the father’s death as a literary and political watershed.  The book considers how elegies inquire into the rhetoric of mourning as it is complicated by father-daughter kinship.

Tanis MacDonald is the author of three books of poetry, most recently Rue the Day, and the editor of Speaking of Power: The Poetry of Di Brandt.

This event will also feature readings by Jennifer Still and Katherena Vermette.
