United Way & Charities Suffering l Vic Toews bans take out food

Canada’s Public Safety Minister Vic Toews has put an end to inmates spending their own money to order in food.  With a warden’s approval, inmate groups had received permission to to order pizza and fried chicken.

These food drive nights are also fundraisers for local charities and relief efforts such as Doctors Without Borders and victims of hurricanes and earthquakes.

John Chaif, a member of the inmate committee at Joyceville Institution, near Kingston, Ont., said in recent years Joyceville inmates have donated thousands of dollars to children’s toy drives at Christmas, to local food banks, to shelters for youth and to earthquake victims in Haiti.
Chaif said inmates were charged a premium for the food and part of the proceeds would go to a charity.

The food drives were also an opportunity for inmates to make positive social contact with people on the outside, according to Catherine Latimer, executive director of the John Howard Society of Canada.
“This is not something to be discouraged, in fact it is something that we should try to encourage,” Latimer said. “The more inmates are participating in pro-social contact, the more likely it is that they will continue to do so on the outside.”

“We raised a lot of money from those food nights for different charities and that is really going to hurt,” said Lois Gorgerat, a volunteer with the United Way in Eastern Ontario. For the past 15 years she has helped them donate tens of thousands of dollars to local school projects, humane societies and local firefighters.
“They raise from $5,000 to $20,000 a year... it’s gonna hurt the community… if they’re trying to do something good to give back to the community, why are you putting up these walls?”

Greg McMaster has been in prison for more than 34 years.  He’s helped raise thousands of dollars for various charities, including the annual Special People’s Olympiad at Collins Bay Institution in Kingston.
“We raised as much as $50,000 and $25,000 of that was raised in-house from inmates,” McMaster said.
He said inmates who have jobs make, at most, about $54 dollars every two weeks. So for them to pay $5 or $10 for a slice of pizza is a big investment.
“We’re supporting local businesses in the community and on top of that we’re making donations to local charities. So at the end of the day who’s really getting hurt?” he said.

This exhibition explores the use of yellows and ochres in Ivan Eyre’s art. The oldest yellow pigment is yellow ochre. Egyptians and the ancient world made wide use of the mineral orpiment for a more brilliant yellow. In the Middle Ages, Europeans manufactured lead tin yellow. They later imported Indian yellow and rediscovered the method for the production of Naples yellow, which was used by the Egyptians.

Leo Mol made frequent sketching trips with members of the Group of Seven, including A. Y. The influence of the G7 on his style and palette is visible both in his handling of the medium and in his subject.

Artwork in this exhibit will offer visions of a future where earth and mankind’s fate change in unison. Each artist approaches this theme by ‘uncovering’ their unique style and commentary on the new earth cycle to follow, with an interesting blend of darkness, humor, and hope.

trafficked l Polaris Project: the National Human Trafficking Hotline

December 20, 7:00 pm
The Edge Gallery and Urban Art Centre, 611 Main Street
Please join us for an evening of art and education.
Human trafficking is a multi-billion dollar market, bringing in an estimated
31 billion dollars annually. It is the fastest growing organized crime business,
currently ranking third after the trafficking of illegal drugs and arms.
Human trafficking happens all over the world, including Canada.
It is not someone else's problem. It is our problem as well.
It's time we start talking about it.
Still accepting submissions, please contact if you are interested.

Polaris Project runs the National Human Trafficking Hotline (1-888-3737-888)

Maybe you've already called us to report a young man selling magazines door-to-door, terrified to miss his quota; a truck stop where young teens approach big-rigs late at night; a neighbor's domestic laborer who is never paid for his work.

Maybe tomorrow you'll stay in a hotel where a young woman came to work as an exchange student but is being threatened with deportation if she tells you that they're not paying her; or this weekend you'll go to a restaurant and learn one of your servers is being forced to work long hours without breaks or the ability to quit.

If you do, you will want to be prepared.
It is a tiny step forward toward a world without slavery.
But people who took that step save lives. Every day.

Not sure how to recognize trafficking in your neighborhood?
but the first step is to learn our number: 1-888-3737-888.

Open City Cinema: It's Such a Beautiful Day

FRAME ARTS WAREHOUSE, 318 Ross Avenue
December 18
doors 7:30 pm l movie 8:00
Admission $7

Open City Cinema is excited to present It’s Such a Beautiful Day, the epic stick-figure animation masterpiece by oscar-nominated Don Hertzfeldt.

Hertzfeldt and company have finally released all three chapters in “The Bill Trilogy”, seamlessly edited together into a single feature-length collage film about identity, family, and the meaning of life.
Drawn by hand and painstakingly constructed on 35mm film using traditional and experimental optical printing techniques, Everything Will Be OK (2006), I Am So Proud of You (2008), and It’s Such a Beautiful Day (2011) have screened separately worldwide, been unanimously lauded by critics and audiences, and been prized dozens of times over.

This is a hilarious and surprisingly profound film which has drawn comparisons to the work of Terrence Malick, Stan Brakhage, David Lynch, and Bruce Conner.

The feature will be preceded by Don’s short film Wisdom Teeth (2010), and followed by a small party with music and cheer, where we hope you’ll create art of your own.

Mercy For Animals Canada Investigates Animal Abuse at Puratone

A groundbreaking Mercy For Animals Canada undercover investigation provides a shocking look into blatant animal abuse at one of the nation's largest pork producers—Puratone—in Arborg, Manitoba.
Major food providers have recognized the inherent cruelty of gestation crates. Costco, Safeway, McDonald’s, Tim Hortons, and over 30 other major retailers in Canada and the United States have started demanding that their suppliers do away with them.
Grocery giants Sobeys, Superstore/Loblaws, Metro, and Walmart condone confining animals in crates barely larger than their bodies by selling pork from producers who use gestation crates—including Puratone.
These corporations have both the power and ethical responsibility to reject this abusive factory farming practice.
An MFA Canada investigator documented:
  • Thousands of pregnant pigs confined to filthy, metal gestation crates so small they were unable to even turn around or lie down comfortably for nearly their entire lives
  • Pigs suffering from large, open wounds and pressure sores from rubbing against the bars of their tiny cages or lying on the hard concrete flooring
  • Pregnant pigs—physically taxed from constant birthing—suffering from distended, inflamed, and bleeding prolapses
  • Pigs too sick to stand being kicked, slapped, and pulled by their ears to force them to walk
  • Pigs having metal bolts fired into their skulls, leaving many still conscious and blinking
  • Workers slamming piglets into the ground and leaving them to slowly suffer and die
  • Workers cutting out testicles and slicing off the tails of fully conscious piglets without the use of any painkillers.
While many of the standard industry practices uncovered at this pig factory farm are needlessly cruel, subjecting animals to a lifetime of confinement in crates so small they are virtually immobilized is perhaps the worst form of institutionalized animal abuse.
A growing number of animal welfare experts opposes the use of gestation crates.
Dr. Ian Duncan, holder of the oldest university chair in animal welfare in North America, stated: “It is the worst cruelty inflicted on an animal that I have witnessed in many years.”
Dr. Temple Grandin, the world's leading expert on farmed animal welfare, previously condemned the use of gestation crates, asserting: “Basically, you're asking a sow to live in an airline seat. ... it's something that needs to be phased out.”

The Winnipeg Humane Society is applauding the efforts of Mercy for Animals Canada for its work in capturing video that shows the horrifying conditions that pigs in Manitoba are raised in by some members of the pork industry.

“This barn is not a one-off situation, this is a level of abuse and neglect that is a standing practice in many other barns,” said Bill McDonald, Winnipeg Humane Society CEO.  “I implore every consumer to use their purchasing power and demand humane treatment for food animals through their grocery chain.”

The gestation crates shown in the video are the focus of The WHS’ Quit Stalling campaign, which urges pork producers to phase out this inhumane practice.

The crates are approximately 2 feet wide by 7 feet long and a sow will live her entire life in it.

Many of the larger pork producers have pledged to phase out these crates by 2017, including Maple Leaf Foods. Recently the Puratone Corporation farms have been acquired by Maple Leaf Foods.

“Maple Leaf will now be operating over 60 pig barns in Manitoba and stated as recently as March, 2012, in a letter to me, that they would meet their conversion commitment in 2017,” states McDonald. The WHS will be communicating with Maple Leaf about this video to urge the company to adhere to the committed date of 2017 to phase out gestation stalls in Manitoba.

The Winnipeg Humane Society is a registered charity and non-profit organization whose mission is to protect animals from suffering and to promote their welfare and dignity.
Funded primarily by donations, The WHS also offers cat, dog and other critter adoptions. All adoptable pets have been spayed or neutered, had a health check and a behavioural assessment.

Saltwatch: Aftermath by Elvira Finnigan

Centre culturel franco-manitobain, 340 Provencher Boulevard

Opening Reception December 13, 5 - 8 pm
December 13, 2012 to February 2, 2013

Free!  Everyone welcome!

Saltwatch:Aftermath is an installation based on the remains of a dinner party.
The dinner will be hosted and performed prior to the opening by the informal organization, the “collectif post neo-realistes”, a group of poets, prose writers and playwrights, who have been a voice of the Franco Manitoban literature for several decades.

Visitors to the opening will be met with a video of the event and a long table where the plates, glasses, left over food and fragments of literary works read throughout the dinner have been left on the table, all filled or coated with salt brine.

As the exhibition progresses, the brine evaporates and salt crystals form.
The brine creeps out of the containers and onto the surface of the table creating a
map-like pattern, a kind of “automatic mapping”.

Guests are invited to see the progress of the crystallization at
the CCFM New Year’s Open House on January 10, 5 - 7 pm.
A final viewing will be held on the last Saturday of the exhibition, February 2, 2 - 4 pm.

JEUDI CINÉMA: Familiar Ground l cre8ery: Fractions

December 13, 6:45 pm

We cordially invite you to be our guest for this private screening.
The film will be presented in French with English subtitles.

Following up his acclaimed feature film Continental, a Film without Guns, Québec’s filmmaker Stéphane Lafleur introduces us to fascinatingly compelling characters in a story at the edge of reality.  Part of the official selection of the 61st Berlin International Film Festival, En Terrains Connus presents a deceptively simple but quietly powerful sibling drama with a touch of fantasy.

Maryse and her husband are desperate to sell a backhoe sitting abandoned in their suburban yard. Her brother, Benoit, is trapped in endless adolescence, sharing their childhood home with their invalid father. Benoit is enamoured with a single mom named Nathalie, and he's hoping to finally grow up by living with her. A serious accident at the factory where Maryse works, a strange series of coincidences, and the arrival of a man claiming to come from the future lead Maryse and Benoit to a life-altering road trip.

December 13 - 18
Opening Reception: December 13, 7:30 - 11 pm
Friday, 12-6, Saturday 12-4, Tuesday 12-6

This is an exhibition of four unique artists who to an outside viewer may appear too different to work collectively. However, Fractions is about both the individual and the group; how the unique parts come together to create a collective whole.  Through a mutual desire to learn and grow, this group of complementary opposites has developed dissimilar but connected art works, which speak together and separately, like voices singing in harmony to an unwritten melody.

Working primarily in ceramics and painting, Christopher explores the invisible forces which propel objects, events and people.

Anna Frances Robinson’s work reflects the structural beauty of these objects, transformed through her perspective and inviting the viewer to enter into the space of the painted structure.

Sarah Neville’s interactions can be seen in both her paintings and contemporary textile work.  The unusual and unseen sides of pets and animals are her focal point.

Ashley Feduniw adopts the philosophy of Cubism in order to create her work. Her goal is to allow the viewer to gain appreciation for an object that has seemingly been forgotten by many.

“FORGOTTEN MANITOBA”
Fine-art photography by Scott Kroeker and Federico Buchbinder
To December 29
Hours: Mon/Thu 10-9; Fri/Sat 10-6; Sun 1-5

Scott and Federico were born in opposite corners of the world, but developed a similar passion: photographing abandoned rural buildings and vehicles and turning them into authentic works of art. Their explorations take them deep into rural Manitoba's less-travelled roads, looking for derelict houses, tractors, cars and mementos of the country life that once was.  The emotional connection with their subjects is immediately apparent when viewing their dramatic images of the aging, the forsaken, and the decaying.
