Interview with Mukesh Singh, India gang-rapist, gets documentary banned

India on trial: Why is sexual violence so prevalent in the country?

India's Daughter is being aired around the world to coincide with International Women's Day (March 8) and will be shown in more than 15 countries around the world. It is a UK-India co-production of Assassin Films and Tathagat Films.
Before the film was even released it has been banned in India and has caused much upheaval. We encourage you take part in this important issue.

Her name was Jyoti. Her name means Light of God.

Jyoti Laxmi Pandey is the young woman's real name.
According to the archaic India Penal Code system the name of Rape Victims is not released, so as to "protect" them from social stigma.
This is similar to how we go about these things in our system with laws like Megan's Law.

Wherever you are. Whoever you are.
Join us on January 26, Republic Day in India, for a virtual vigil for Jyoti Singh Pandey, the most recent victim of Indian culture's violence against women.

We ask you to simply wear a BLACK BINDI to help raise consciousness.
YOUR BLACK BINDI may be a black paper cut out stuck on with non toxic glue.
Or use duct tape, marked masking tape, or a fancy bindi available from an Indian market.

The black bindi is an agreed upon symbol of this black mark against Indian society.
This black bindi is a symbol of how the system fails its women.
The red bindi is a symbol of a married woman in India.

Help us in taking this step towards bringing attention to this subject, and to ask the Indian government to take vigorous steps to change the culture of violence.

In addition, please do something concrete, like donating to a rape crisis center.

Namaste.

A candlelight vigil for Jyoti Singh Pandey - the most recent victim of India's culture of violence against women.
To ask the Indian government to change the culture of violence.
Please invite anyone you wish.
For all out of towners - please share with your NYC friends if you can. Thank you.

The two-finger test has been used for decades in India as a way to see whether the victim is "habituated to sex". If a woman is sexually active than she has no right to claim rape, because rape is only committed against virgins.
You see the misogyny running rampant.
This would be a great first step in fighting against
a cultural mindset that seeks to blame the victim rather than the perpetrator!

In January, Sakhi hosted a candle light vigil called "Shine Jyoti" at Union Square to honor the memory of Jyoti Singh Pandey, the young woman who was brutally raped and murdered in New Delhi and to increase awareness about gender based violence happening right here in NYC.
