This symposium is open to the public.
Leading artists, art historians, and curators will gather at the WAG for a one-day
symposium to discuss Inuit art and the transformation and defining moments that
have shaped this area of Canadian art history.
Led by Darlene Coward Wight, Curator of Inuit Art, it will feature presentations by contemporary Inuit artists Shuvinai Ashoona, Tim Pitseolak and Jamesie Pitsiulak, as well as talks by Ingo Hessel, Christine Lalonde (NGC), Norman Vorano (CMC), and Bill Ritchie (Kinngait Studio, Cape Dorset Print Shop).

Creation & Transformation: Defining Moments in Inuit Art

Opening Reception January 25, 7 pm
Creation & Transformation describes the genesis and evolution of contemporary Inuit art from its inception to the present day: from carvers in the 1950s, such as Johnny Inukpuk, to later storytellers in stone, such as Davidialuk Alasua Amittu, and in whalebone, such as Karoo Ashevak;from pioneer graphic artist Jessie Oonark to artists working today in new and personal idioms, such as Shuvinai Ashoona.
“The exhibition offers insight into some of the defining moments of Inuit art,” says Darlene Coward Wight, Curator of Inuit Art.
The book accompanying the publication, by Coward Wight, includes essays by art historians Susan Gustavision, Ingo Hessel, Christine Lalonde, and Norman Vorano. Illustrated by 150 colour and archival images, it is a new historical narrative of contemporary Inuit art. It is available in the Gallery Shop.

Tunniit: Retracing the Lines of Inuit Tattoos
A documentary produced by Alethea Arnaquq-Baril about her journey to explore the lost tradition of Inuit facial tattoos.
Admission is free for delegates. For others it is included with Gallery admission.
The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Arnaquq-Baril.
Alethea Arnaquq-Baril, an Inuk producer and director from Iqaluit, Nunavut, owns Unikkaat Studios, Inc.
