Cinematheque, Main Floor - 100 Arthur Street
January 11, 12, 13, 16 at 7:00 pm
Finally, The First Winter gets screened in it's hometown!

Director RYAN MCKENNA | 2012 | CANADA | 72 MIN
Starring Rob Vilar, Eve Majzels and Alek Rzeszowski

Ryan McKenna and all lead actors will be present on opening night!!

Premiering at Montreal's prestigious Festival du Nouveau CinĂ©ma, director Ryan McKenna has created a dryly-funny gem about unrequited love. Rob Vilar gives a beautiful deadpan performance as a DJ living in Portugal who learns that an affair with a woman named Sophie has led to her pregnancy. He flies back to Winnipeg to be by her side only to encounter an icy reception and a forbidding city. McKenna has captured Winnipeg in all its mid winter darkness with beautiful cinematography and a bleak sense of humour reminiscent of Finnish master Aki Kaurismaki and Jim Jarmusch. Created under the rules of the seven point “Brutalism in Cinema Manifesto” whereby the new cinema of Winnipeg is stark, austere, brutal and cold...but told with jokes. -Dave Barber
