Phoenix: The Life of Norman Bethune

A surgeon, an artist, and a writer, Bethune was an extraordinary Canadian. His life was characterized by cycles of achievement and self-destruction.  His adventurous spirit led him from the operating rooms of Montreal to the battlegrounds of Spain and China.
This book examines the reasoning that led Bethune to embrace Marxism and shows the depth of his faith in the triumph of communism, a commitment that led to his death from an infection caught while performing surgery in remote northern China.

Roderick Stewart, author of Bethune and The Mind of Norman Bethune, is a retired teacher of history.
Sharon Stewart has over twenty-five years experience as a writer and as an editor.

Disraeli: The Romance of Politics

The recurring fantasy structures of Disraeli’s novels bear a striking similarity to the imaginative shaping of his political career.  O’Kell's investigation shines new light on Disraeli’s novels, his two governments, his imperialism, and his handling of the Irish Church Disestablishment Crisis of 1868 and the Eastern Question in the 1870s.
Robert O’Kell is Professor of English, and Dean Emeritus of the Faculty of Arts, at the University of Manitoba.

Prince Achmed with Julia Ryckman l TRUST w/ ERAAS & Kindest Cuts l Winnipeg Folk Festival: A Night of Original Music, Emma Cloney

February 28, 7:00 pm
Winnipeg Cinematheque, 100 Arthur Street
Featuring a live score by Julia Ryckman and friends
Special Event Pricing: $10 (member), $12 (non-member)

The Adventures of Prince Achmed, a German animated fairytale film from 1926.
Taken from The Arabian Nights, the film tells the story of a wicked sorcerer who tricks Prince Achmed into mounting a magical flying horse and sends the rider off on a flight to his death. But the prince soars headlong into a series of wondrous adventures.

It is the oldest surviving animated feature film, and features a silhouette animation technique Lotte Reiniger had invented.  It involved manipulated cutouts made from cardboard and thin sheets of lead under a camera. It is similar to Wayang shadow puppets, though hers were animated frame by frame, not manipulated in live action.
The original prints featured color tinting. Several famous avant-garde animators worked on this film: Walter Ruttmann, Berthold Bartosch, and Carl Koch.

Julia Ryckman is a classically trained opera singer and piano player and is presently front-woman of post-punk rockers This Hisses, solo project Slattern, and experimental duo Triunfo Do Gato. She calls her new score “chamber punk", with one foot in the technical, demanding world of Opera and the other in the dirty punk rock bars of Winnipeg.

Winnipeg Lost Dog Alert l Found Dog Tips l Danger on Craigslist

Recently people have been posting on Facebook that they have seen lost dogs.
During our cold winters, the dogs are in danger.

If you have found a dog alone, try to lure the dog with treats and use a low voice.
DO NOT CHASE IT!  Let them come to you.
If the dog looks interested, move slowly towards it keeping your hip toward the dog.
Do not look at it.  Have the leash ready to slip over the dog’s head.
Show a treat through the loop so the dog might poke its head through to get the treat.
Or open your car door and see if they want to go for a car ride.

Take it to Winnipeg Animal Service (WAS) or The Winnipeg Humane Society (WHS).
If after hours, please call Pembina Veterinary Clinic (open 24 hours) or Southglen Veterinary Hospital (open till midnight); they often take dogs until the next day.

If you can keep the dog notify the WAS, WHS and the vet in your area.
You may take the dog to the WAS or WHS or a vet and get it scanned for a microchip (free).
Take the dog for a walk around the area you found it.  He might lead you to his home.

If you cannot catch the dog, please report the dog’s description to 311, with the location and the direction the dog was heading.

~~~~~
--Check for license or ID tag and ask around your neighbourhood.
--Call 311 to report the dog found.
--Take the dog to the nearest vet to see if it has a microchip or tattoo.
--Put a sign in your yard saying you found a dog and put posters up in your area.
--Put an ad in Kijiji and the Free Press.  Plus post on Winnipeg Lost Dog Alert’s Facebook page.  It’s free.
--When someone calls ask them to bring proof of ownership.  It could be a vet bill or adoption papers or pictures.
A dog alone IS a dog LOST!  It is our responsibility to keep it SAFE!
Be careful!  Not all dogs are friendly.
Please do not give away free pets on Craigslist.
Even on Craigslist’s own site, the dangers are stated:
As you may be aware, animals given away for free can, and unfortunately often do, meet gruesome fates. They can end up in the hands of animal abusers like Barry Herbeck, a Wisconsin man who was convicted last year of torturing and killing animals he obtained through "free to good home" ads. He confessed to taking his kids with him when responding to the ads so people would be comfortable turning animals over to him.
People known as "bunchers," who obtain animals to sell to research facilities, often acquire animals by answering "free to good home ads.”
Pioneers for Animal Welfare Society, Inc.
Because there are animal abusers out there who search Craigslist looking for free animals.
“Free to good home” dogs and cats are obtained for research, dog fighting, baiting, etc.
ThatMutt.com: A Dog Blog
PLEASE do a home check/visit for any animal you place and follow up on the adoption.
Small Animal Rescue Society of BC
Please sign the petition
You can help end the cruelty by sharing the truth about animals’ abuse.
Thank you!
Prairie Theatre Exchange: This is War
by Hannah Moscovitch, contributing writer to CBC Radio's AFGHANADA
February 21 - March 10
Preview - February 20
This one thing always runs in my head. I want to do right by my guys. I’m responsible for them, for their lives. It’s on me. That’s the main thing. I want to do right by my guys.
Four soldiers in Afghanistan are being interviewed about an incident all too common in war, but unimaginably horrifying to those of us safe at home.
Four different perspectives draw the audience into the soldier’s reality, where the split second in which the decision is made to shoot or not shoot is the very essence of war.
What is the aftermath of that kind of experience?
Lisa Berry          Master Corporal Tanya Young
John Cleland      Captain Stephen Hughes
Ian Lake            Private Jonny Henderson (until March 3)
Brendan Murray  (Medic) Sergeant Chris Anders
Kevin Walker      Private Jonny Henderson (March 5-10)
Artistic Director Robert Metcalfe says: We’ve been at war as a nation for a decade and rarely explore what that means and what the real costs are to the people we send to fight, to the country we are trying to build or to ourselves.
Moscovitch’s play is part of the conversation we need.
Audience advisory: violence, sexuality and explicit language.
February 14 - V-Day - End Violence l FUNDRAISERS: Fab Fem l Sarasvàti: So You Think You Can Act
February 14 is also V-Day – a day dedicated to ending violence against women and girls.
Honor this day and help Polaris Project embark upon our second decade of success.
Polaris Project was founded with the belief that everyday people could end modern slavery and human trafficking.
Just this week the U.S. Senate passed the Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act (TVPRA), cornerstone legislation in America’s fight against human trafficking.
Thousands called and emailed Senators, urging them to make this bill a priority.
The Senate passed this legislation 93-5 as an amendment to the Violence Against Women Act on President Lincoln’s birthday.
Urge the House of Representatives to pass the TVPRA and help victims of trafficking.
The fight against human trafficking isn’t only waged on Capitol Hill. It’s on our streets. When people see the young girl being abused and sold for commercial sex
or the nanny who is too afraid to leave the house because she’s been threatened,
citizens are taking action and calling the Hotline (1-888-373-7888).
Last month, Polaris Project’s call specialists answered a record-breaking 2,850 calls.
That’s 65% higher than our entire 2012 monthly average.
In this one month, we:
Identified 323 victims of human trafficking and connected them to services
Directly supported 71 survivors
Reported 114 potential cases of human trafficking to law enforcement
Here are three things you can do:
Share the National Human Trafficking Hotline number (1-888-373-7888)
Make a donation and help fund our work
