Amber Dawn will read from her upcoming book How Poetry Saved My Life: A Hustler's Memoir and lead participants through a series of free-writing exercise, small group work, and brainstorming discussions.
Amber Dawn is a writer and activist based in Vancouver. For nearly two decades her work focused on sex workers’ justice, queer visibility and the anti-violence movement.
As queer femme survivor and ex-sex worker, Amber Dawn’s literary voice has been described as “transgressive” and “marginal”. However, her experiences are far from uncommon. She writes to de-stigmatize and celebrate under-told stories.
This workshop invites participants to explore under-told stories from their personal experience and/or from the world around them, and to develop strategies to creating safe spaces for these stories to be heard. Whether participants are interested in formally writing or simply speaking-up in day-to-day situations, this workshop will offer peer-driven idea-building and practice on being heard.
From February 1 to 17, Genderfest Winnipeg community members will be working to showcase an array of entertainment and radical events such as film screenings, open-mic nights, performance art pieces through contemporary dance, guest speakers, and dance parties. Under the Genderfest Winnipeg umbrella, each event is produced, promoted, and created by the group, organization, or individual hosting it. Genderfest Winnipeg acts as a resource and network base to assist and facilitate where and if needed.
