Portage District Arts Centre, 11-2nd Street NE Portage la Prairie MB
To Sept. 28, 2013

Opening Night Celebration Aug. 15, 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM

Karen Robb studied at the University of Manitoba School of Fine Arts over twenty years ago.  She has created over sixty original works of art.  Nearly half of these have been acquired by private collectors, and her limited reproductions have been in great demand.

Karen’s work is regularly on display at the Birchwood Art Gallery.  Her work has also been displayed in group shows at the Cre8ery Gallery and the Medea Art Gallery.  She co-produced the show Surface Wounds/Fractured Thought in 2011 at the Cre8ery Gallery.  In 2012, Karen and two other Winnipeg artists travelled to Los Angeles to present their self-produced show Les Fauve Canadien.

Thanks to the support of Studio 26 Gallery in Brooklyn, New York, her work has been seen at the Red Dot Festival in Miami and ArtExpo New York. This summer (2013) Studio 26 Gallery will take her work to the ArtHamptons Art Festival, New York.

I am not particularly comfortable with labels. So, while others might describe me as a Contemporary Abstract Expressionist, I see myself simply as an artist whose influences span many different styles of art: the Abstract, Modern, Fauvist, Post-modern and Pop Art movements… I look to reveal the relationship between architectural design, art, nature and the female form. My hope is that these influences may spark the imagination of the viewer and take them onto another journey.

The Analogues - Roy Ascott
Closes September 27
Curated by Anthony Kiendl and co-presented with Video Pool Media Arts Centre

Explore a small but crucial body of work by English inter-media artist and theorist Roy Ascott. The works were largely created in England between 1963 and 1970. They form a crucial part of the artist’s “Analogue” works – non-digital, two-dimensional and non-representational wall works that pre-figure his later artwork relating to computer networks, viewer interaction, and telematics. Ascott was the first to coin the term “telematic art” to describe the use of online computer networks as an art medium.

Ascott will be a visiting artist and lecturer at the Summer Institute.
Participating faculty and artists in this year’s Institute also include: Ken Gregory,
Oliver Botar, Eduardo Kac, Candice Davies, Ray Fenwick, Nikki Forrest, Thea Jones,
Jean Klimack, Erika Lincoln, Freya Bjorg Olafson, Juan Ortiz-Apuy, Victoria Scott,
Matthew Walker, Mitchell Wiebe and Aaron Weldon.

A publication Roy Ascott: The Analogues will be published by Plug In Editions, with an essay by Anthony Kiendl and an interview with Ascott by Dr. Melentie Pandilovski, Director of Video Pool Media Arts Centre, Winnipeg.
