Operation Red Nose operates across Canada during the Christmas holiday season, offering party-goers a free, safe ride home. Volunteers pick you up and drive to a destination of your choice, in your own car.

The service, which runs November 27 to New Year's Day, is free but donations are accepted and forwarded to local community organizations.

Last year, over $1.5 million was redistributed to non-profit youth organizations and/or amateur sports organizations across the country.

Those in Winnipeg who want the service can call 204-947-6673 (NOSE).

Found this article in The Star interesting:

Canada’s refugees will not come from the hundreds of thousands of displaced people streaming into Europe. They will most likely come from Jordan, Turkey or Lebanon, where almost all have been registered by the UNHCR.

The article also included the following…

Government-sponsored refugees normally go through three levels of screening:

Registering with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees:
Tell their story of how they escaped and why
Confirm their identity through documents, biometric security screening, iris scanning
Be registered in an automated and interconnected system
Red flag any cases of war crimes or criminality

UNHCR re-settlement list
Triage refugees and select 1 per cent who could be resettled
Interview candidates again
Give priority to the vulnerable, those with medical problems, single mothers and children
Single young men unlikely to make the cut

Interview with Canadian visa officers
One-on-one interviews with visa officers in the Middle East
Confirm story again
Run names through data bases of Canadian Border Services Agency, Canadian Security Intelligence Service and RCMP

The Winnipeg Folk Festival brings the Current Swell back after their performances at Folk Fest this summer.
Come and move to the grooves of an accidental band, a bunch of friends who liked to chil, get into a roots-rock mood and jam. In 2005 they didn’t plan to tour the world, to release five albums, or accumulate an army of fans. They definitely didn’t expect to wind up opening for The Beach Boys or Cat Empire. But there was a magic in their union that’s best heard on 2014’s Ulysses.

The Park Theatre is proud to present Half Moon Run with Folly & The Hunter!
When Half Moon Run formed in Montreal in 2009, multi-instrumentalists Devon Portielje, Conner Molander and Dylan Phillips abandoned every backup plan. For the three founding members, and for fellow multi-instrumentalist Isaac Symonds, who joined the band during the early touring for Dark Eyes, it materialized after months of creative frustration.

Scott Nolan 'Silverhill' Album Release Party
Silverhill is a place where “moonshiners still bootleg whisky” from 106 year old recipes; a place where they don’t call the cops, and fire wood is hewn by hand.
“Every so often you’re in these moments where there’s so much happening,” Nolan recalls.

Winnipeg Sessionistas presents:
Christmas in Our Hearts, a benefit concert for Archie Umbal
Sessionistas is a band that was started by Archie Umbal. Unfortunately, earlier this year, Archie was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia, but that didn't stop him from serving SFC and performing. This concert is to gather all friends and families to reminisce with 90's Christmas songs, and to show support and our love for Archie.
There will be performances by local Winnipeg singers & performers!
We'll also be selling some snacks & bottled water!

Please message the following people for tickets: Karina Paredes, Charm Moreno,
Steph Bonifacio, Shane Ilagan, Edz Madriaga, Macky Palacios, Kitz Quitane
