Firsthand, Being Greene airs one week following Mental Illness Awareness Week (MIAW)

On the surface the Greenes are a fun-loving family. Dave is an Elvis Tribute Artist. Roxie is a writer. Quinn is an actor, and his little brother Kane is a beatboxer. But they are fighting an ongoing battle with mental illness. Dave is a hoarder. Kane suffers from suicidal thoughts. Roxie’s long history with depressive disorder has taken its toll. Quinn, the family caretaker, sacrifices his own ambitions to help the others.
Quinn is ready to end the secrecy surrounding his family’s mental health.  But can he convince his family to join him?

Written and directed by executive producer, Jeff Newman, with Jocelyn Mitchell producer. Produced by Nüman Films, a Gemini Award winning company that produces  documentary and lifestyle programming. Find Quinn’s blog and information about the documentary at http://www.cbc.ca/firsthand/episodes/being-greene

"Winnipeg's Rooster Town: Myths and Realities"

The Grant Park area wasn’t always a mecca of shopping and condos. For most of the 1900s the space between Grant Avenue and Taylor Avenue, from Wilton Street west until Lindsay Street, was a Metis community known as Rooster Town. During the 1950s the space was illegally taken and the residents forcibly removed for new immigrant homes.

Dr. Peters is an urban social geographer who received her BA (Honours) at the University of Winnipeg and her MA and PhD at Queen’s University in Kingston. Her recent edited book with Chris Andersen, Indigenous in the City: Contemporary Identities and Cultural Innovation, focusses on urban Indigenous experiences.

Happy Seventh Anniversary to Us!! by Margaret Ullrich

Happy Seventh Birthday to Winnipeg is Better Than Chocolate!!
And thank you for visiting, whether you dropped in on a daily, weekly or occasional basis during the past seven years!

I'm always amazed at learning where you live.
From the beginning, when I started this blog in 2009, Canada was always the number one country for visitors.
Well, that changed last year.
The United States is the top visitor now!
Maybe it's due to the change in our dollar's value.

The changes for the past year - a big increase in visitors from Russia and Germany.
Japan is a new member of the top ten group, replacing Poland.
Tourists can sure get a great bang for their vacation buck in Canada.
Hope they are coming to Winnipeg and enjoying a lot of great events here.

According to Blogger there have been 334,573 visitors since this blog began!
That’s almost 53,000 new people taking a look at Winnipeg events since last year!

The top ten countries and their visitors are:
United States………….. 88,784
Canada……………………. 82,359
Germany……..…………. 51,536
Russia…………..………… 34,307
Ukraine.…………..……….12,152
France……………….……. 10,395
United Kingdom….……. 3,557
China………………….…….. 3,134
Japan..………….….….…… 2,533
Slovenia………….….…..… 1,976

During the years there have also been visitors from Moldova, Turkey, Ireland,
Australia, Singapore, Taiwan, Argentina, Denmark, Japan, Sweden, Eritrea, Italy,
Finland, Spain, the Netherlands, Macedonia (FYROM), Mexico, Afghanistan, Thailand,
Slovakia, India,Bangladesh, Israel, Malaysia, Kuwait, Greece, Kenya, Vietnam,
Czech Republic, Portugal, Bulgaria, Romania, United Arab Emirates and Namibia
- just to name the top visitors.
I'm so glad you stopped by for a look.
Thank you for taking an interest in events happening here in Winnipeg!

It’s been interesting learning what types of events you’re interested in attending.
I do pay attention to which posts get the most visits.
I’ll be posting more of those, and similar, events.
I'll also be cutting down on the events that you're not interested in seeing.
Who has time to waste, right?

Hope you’re also enjoying hearing the music from our up-and-coming musicians!
Please take a moment and comment when a post interests you.
Local artists do check when they’re in the media and they love the feedback.

Since I don’t post on a daily basis, why not become a subscriber?
It’s easy and free - just click and post your email address.
By joining you won’t miss a post or an event.

As I said when Sophie and I signed off our weekly show...
Have a great weekend. How can you miss - you're in Winnipeg!

Head In The Sand has joined forces with Winnipop and Manitoba Music for SpaceLand 2: a friendly takeover of the urban space between Edmonton and Kennedy streets. They will host a night of live music, video projections, food trucks, and more.
Music lineup includes acclaimed hip hop party crew The Lytics, the sweaty dance rhythms of Attica Riots, rap triumvirate 3Peat, DJ favourite Mama Cutsworth, electronic pop/R&B outfit ATLAAS, witty internet rapper SMRT, idiosyncratic pop outfit Touching -- the new project from Head In The Sand henchman Michael Falk, and a special treat with Saskatoon party-starting DJ The Gaff.
A nod to the classic games at the Magicland arcade that once brought youth downtown, SpaceLand also references our city's abundance of wide open space, and our history of under-using that space.

Sargent & Victor & Me - Written and Performed by Debbie Patterson
Directed by Arne MacPherson
co-presented by Theatre Projects Manitoba and Sick + Twisted Theatre

When all I can do is pray, what will I pray for?
Debbie Patterson’s work intersects core-area residents with a disabled food bank volunteer to unlock the mystery of how neighbourhoods evolve and how we cope with processes of destruction. Drawn from first person accounts, Sargent & Victor & Me is a haunting narrative infused with a potent honesty that illuminates Patterson’s capacity to touch difficult subject matter with humour and grace.
