Cause a commotion on the day our neighbours welcome their new president.
Noise Complaint is a response to feeling helpless in the wake of the results of the
2016 US presidential election. While we cannot fix their problems, we can work to
promote social justice and peace in Canada.

Women's March on Washington - Winnipeg
The event will start with a blessing by an Elder, speakers, followed by a march to the US Consulate at the corner of Portage and Main, and back to Portage Place. Speakers TBA.

We acknowledge that we are in Treaty 1 territory. We will march on the same day as hundreds of women in Washington. We will stand in solidarity with people gathering all over the world that day in support of women's rights. This event was sparked by Trump's election to the White House. We will march to show that the anger, fear, sexism, and racism he provoked through his campaign will not be tolerated.

Even in Canada we still have work to do. This march will serve as a platform for women in marginalized communities to be heard. We invite people from all genders, races, abilities, religious communities, political affiliations and sexual orientations. Organizers:
Women's Health Clinic
IRCOM Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization of Manitoba
WGSSA - Women’s and Gender Studies Student Association of University of Manitoba
Black Space Winnipeg
CUPE Local 2348
Winnipeg Labour Council
Rainbow Resource Centre

The Frontier Fiddlers perform with Manitoba Chamber Orchestra

Manitoba has produced several internationally renowned fiddle players. The Frontier Fiddlers represent the next generation of Manitoba fiddle talent. Made up of students in the Frontier School division, they come from as far away as Norway House. They’re immersed in Métis and aboriginal fiddle traditions, like the Red River Jig, which they play with vigour, skill, and a sense of fun… and all of them are teenagers or younger.

The Fiddlers, who maintain a special connection to the MCO’s northern outreach group and played at an MCO concert in 2010, will be featured in these two concerts.

First, they’ll treat us to a spectacular medley of traditional folk music. Then they’ll join the Orchestra in performing Water Circle, a new work by composer Jim Hiscott. Inspired by the Métis fiddle music of the prairies, as well as the water dances of the loons, Water Circle will give the Fiddlers the chance to show off in performing the fiddle reels inlaid in the piece.

During the evening concert the MCO will add a performance of JS Bach’s second violin concerto, a challenge for MCO Concertmaster Karl Stobbe, as well as Bartok’s Divertimento, an appealing modernist work decorated with folk colours.

Jazz Winnipeg is pleased to present Measha Brueggergosman’s powerful project, Songs Of Freedom. Breuggergosman is one of Canada’s foremost opera stars who got back to her roots with the project. Involving a documentary, a journey to her family’s homeland of Cameroon, and an exploration of her Nova Scotian roots, Brueggergosman’s voice shines while taking on these powerful songs of freedom.

I wanted to explore this repertoire because it’s dear to my heart. These spirituals are close to my Christian faith. They are also a very important part of my family’s history... The spirituals were born out of a time when my people were oppressed and needed to find a way not only to communicate with each other, but also to express themselves.

First Steps is an opportunity for students to explore the many facets and possibilities of movement invention and arrangement. Senior students, Aspirants and Artistic faculty apply to present new works. Student choreographers choose from the dancer(s) that they feel are best suited to their work. Occasionally special permission is given to junior level students to choreograph and to Recreational Division students to perform.

Students who do not choreograph or perform are involved in all other aspects of putting on a production. Students choose the subject matter, length of their piece and style or dance genre. Choreographers may choose to work with recorded music or live musicians and may use already existing or new compositions.

In coordination with the RWB Wardrobe Department, choreographers choose the costumes that best reflect their choreographic ideas, and with guidance from the Production Department, they design the lighting that will best support their dance. The final performances are the culmination of this creative learning process.
