WSO Celebrates the Nonsuch

The Nonsuch was built in England to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the Hudson’s Bay Company in 1970. It is considered one of the finest replicas in the world and sailed 14,000 kilometres of salt and fresh water before finding her home at the Museum in 1974.

This year the Nonsuch Gallery is being updated with new immersive experiences, artifacts, and stories. The reopening of the Nonsuch Gallery coincides with the 350th anniversary of the voyage of the original Nonsuch to Hudson Bay in 1668.

WSO musicians will perform on the deck of the Nonsuch and around the ship in a program of water music from the pens of George Frideric Handel and other great composers!

The Museum Galleries will be open to explore before and/or after each performance. Doors to the Nonsuch Gallery will open approximately 30 minutes before each performance.

Marquis Hill hones a warm, mellifluous tone on trumpet and flugelhorn with which he unravels sleek, melodic passages. Hill builds on his distinctive sound to craft arresting originals that embrace post-bop, hip-hop, R&B, and spoken word.
After releasing four well-received albums - New Gospel (2011), Sound of the City (2012), The Poet (2013) and Modern Flows, vol. 1 (2014) - Hill won the 2014 Thelonious Trumpet Competition which led to the release of 2016’s The Way We Play, where Hill fronts a commanding ensemble, bringing his lyrically postmodern groove to jazz classics.

Lido Pimienta is a Toronto-based, Colombian-born interdisciplinary musician and artist-curator. Lido's latest LP, La Papessa (2016), charts an evolution from her debut LP, Color (2010), an album full of colorful landscapes. Winner of the 2017 Polaris Music Prize, La Papessa describes how Lido has found her independence as a woman and as an artist who refuses to fit notions of what a pop Latina artist ought to be.

Influenced by the desert of Columbia to the bustling cityscape of Toronto, La Papessa takes listeners on a musical journey from traditional Afro-Colombian percussion to global bass and darker avant-garde electronic sounds.

at Kitchen Sync, Winnipeg, Manitoba R3B 2J3

June 19 - Erin Propp & Larry Roy

Singer-songwriter Erin Propp and jazz guitarist Larry Roy create works that are at once deeply personal and achingly relatable. Erin and Larry won Best Jazz Album of the Year at the 2013 Western Canadian Music Awards for their debut album, Courage, My Love, which was also nominated for the Juno Award for Vocal Jazz Album of the Year in 2014. Erin’s distinct voice and Larry’s precision on the guitar come together to create songs and performances that “are thoughtful, seamlessly arranged, and inventive while being accessible” (Juno Awards).

June 20 - Ellen Doty

Ellen Doty is a soulful Canadian vocalist and songwriter with a world-class voice. Doty’s first album, Gold, a more traditional-sounding pop-jazz album, was released in 2014 and reached the top 10 on several college radio charts in Canada. Doty’s sophomore album, Come Fall, seeks to strip the music down to its bare bones. No bass. No background vocals. Just piano, voice, and drums. The mixture of pop, jazz, soul, folk, and indie music is a sound that is undoubtedly hers.

June 21 - Allison Au

Allison Au is an award-winning saxophonist, composer and arranger. Growing up in Toronto, she was captivated by the unhinged freedom of jazz, which, in combination with elements of classical, pop, hip hop and Latin music, influences Au’s soulful sound today. Leader of the Allison Au Quartet, Au’s debut album, The Sky Was Pale Blue, Then Grey earned a Juno nomination in 2013, and her sophomore album Forest Grove won the Juno For Best Jazz Album of the Year: Group in 2016.

June 22 - Robi Botos

From hard bop to swing and heartfelt melodic expression, Robi Botos has managed to master technique, while showcasing his musical expressions in a unique voice. Born in Hungary, Robi, a trained pianist, moved to Canada at age 20. He released his sophmore album, Movin’ Forward, in 2015, which won the 2016 Juno for Solo Jazz Album of the Year.

His 2018 album, Old Soul, sees Robi venturing into a number of different genres (jazz, funk, soul, and gospel), and playing a number of different instruments, including the Harpejji. Old Soul pays tribute to his homeland, with visions of his childhood neighbourhood.
