Dr. Colette Simonot-Maiello, Assistant Professor of Musicology, UofM, will speak about how Carlisle Floyd transports the tale of Susannah and the Elders into New Hope Valley, Tennessee, with a soundscape of the American south created by drawing on Appalachian folk traditions, with fiddling, folk songs, square dances, and Protestant hymns.
