The Winnipeg International Writers Festival welcomes Lawrence Hill as a featured guest at the THIN AIR 2010 fundraiser on Friday, June 4, from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
It will take place at the CanWest Global Performing Arts Centre (MTYP), 2 Forks Market Road, in Winnipeg.

Hill will read from his award-winning best-seller, The Book of Negroes, the story of Aminata, stolen into the slave trade as a young girl and surviving to relocate to Canada, then to Africa, finally reaching old age in England in the abolition era. There will be an on-stage interview of Hill, conducted by THIN AIR Director, Charlene Diehl.
The narrative will be accompanied by documentary images, and intercut with songs performed by the Steve Kirby Quartet — Steve Kirby on bass, Erin Propp on vocals, Jimmy Greene on saxophone, and Curtis Nowosad on drums.
During the early 80s, Hill worked as parliamentary correspondent at the Winnipeg Free Press. His first novel, Some Great Thing, features a young reporter tangling with the French-English politics in Winnipeg during that time. Hill has also written several novels and a memoir, Black Berry, Sweet Juice: On Being Black and White in Canada. He’s also published non-fiction and written for film.
THIN AIR 2010 takes place September 19 to 26. It is one of the most respected literary festivals in the country, and offers programming for all ages in English and in French.
