Kristyn Dunnion, Jim Nason & Phoebe Tsang

Arsenal Pulp Press and Tightrope Books present this evening of readings from three acclaimed authors at McNally Robinson on October 6, from 8:00 pm to 9:00 pm.

Kristyn Dunnion is a self-professed “Lady punk warrior” and the author of the novels Big Big Sky, Missing Matthew, and Mosh Pit. She studied English Literature and Theatre at McGill University and earned a Masters Degree in English at the University of Guelph. She performs creeptastic art as Miss Kitty Galore, and is also the bass player for dykemetal heartthrobs, Heavy Filth. Audacious and loud, her latest work The Dirt Chronicles is a thrashing rejection of mainstream culture, and a combustible homage to class rebellion.

Jim Nason’s award-winning poems and stories have appeared in literary journals and anthologies across North America. He has published two books of poetry: If Lips Were as Red and The Fist of Remembering; Narcissus Unfolding is forthcoming. His debut novel, The Housekeeping Journals, was released to critical acclaim in 2007.
His latest work, The Girl on the Escalator, is a collection of vivid and affecting stories about the brief moments that change lives.

Phoebe Tsang was born in Hong Kong, grew up in England and currently resides in Canada. She is the author of the poetry collection Contents of a Mermaid’s Purse. Phoebe’s poetry can be found in the anthologies 'Garden Variety' and 'Not a Muse'. She has been published in a wide range of journals and is the author of two chapbooks: Solitaires and To Kiss the Ground. A professional violinist, she is a multi-genre artist who holds a BSc in Architecture from the University of London.

Chris Macalino: The Rock and Roll Draft

Tuesday, October 4, 9:00 pm

A graduate explores the music world with a camera. Creating video, theatrics, and unheard of magic, the mission of self discovery multiplies into an adorable exhibit.

Chris Macalino, a painter, poet, and filmmaker, was assigned his first commission at the age of 16, a mural in The Wolseley Area. He graduated as valedictorian with awards for English and Art.  He found the time to write Throat Ocean, and land a role in Sunday Best, while showing on radio, galleries, print and online media.

After graduating with a BFA from The School Of Art, Macalino was assigned to provide a small collection of paintings for a clinic in Florida and continued recording performances. He then celebrated Kulay, a culmination of his painting advances in The Exchange.

Barbara Lange, editor of Through the Window of a Train: A Railway Anthology will be there.

Through the Window of a Train: A Railway Anthology collects stories from thirty Canadian authors (including the late Sheldon Oberman). These stories retell the significance of the railway - or a single journey taken - in the lives of ordinary Canadians.

Dotted with junction and siding names, engine numbers, and routes, this book is a must for the rail enthusiast.

Editor Barbara Lange grew up in a railway-flavoured world in England. Her father, Richard Hurrell, worked for the London North Eastern Railway. As an adult Barbara travelled daily from her home in Brentwood by diesel-electric train and Tube to reach her office in London.

She immigrated to Canada in 1978 and didn't set foot on a train for years. Since then she has travelled on VIA's The Canadian between Vancouver and Toronto, on The Ocean to Halifax, and to Churchill on The Hudson Bay Line. Barbara lives in Winnipeg with her husband, Larry (Smiley) Lange, a retired CNR carman from Transcona.

Metis, Metis Not

Local filmmaker Arlea Ashcroft's short film Metis, Metis Not will be screening at the
3rd Annual Biindigaate Film Festival in Thunder Bay ON on Sunday Sept 25.

Director / Performer: Arlea Ashcroft
Camera: Arlea Ashcroft, Ryan Simmons, Andrea von Wichert
Video Editor: Heidi Phillips
Sound Design: Mike Wright
Curator: Liz Barron

Metis, Metis Not was created as part of a new media art exhibit entitled ID, showing
at Paved Arts in Saskatoon, SK.

I documented my lack of relationship with my cultural background. I explored my own myths, stereotypes, and clichés from reenacting the discovery of my native heritage to my attempts to embrace my Metis-ness or Metis Not-ness at such a late age.
I transformed myself into a Gift Shop Native Doll complete with packaging. The piece deals with my feelings of guilt, lack of entitlement, and own naiveté at my personal cultural crossroads and what it meant to be Metis. It has a homemade simplicity, that is truthful and heartfelt.  - Ashcroft

Slutwalk Winnipeg

An October 15th Slutwalk to protest blaming rape victims!

Women have had enough!
Starting in Toronto this past spring, this movement has become a huge international protest in over 100 cities.

After a rapist was let off because the woman he raped was dressed "slutty", women were told by Toronto Police, "women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimized."

Well... this Slutwalk is us responding by saying we will not be victimized no matter how we are dressed and we will not be blamed for men being unable to control themselves.

Let us walk together, demanding our right to dress any way we feel comfortable, and feel confident that we will not get blamed for men thinking our clothes are our consent.

Any questions? e mail SlutWalk Winnipeg

Monsieur Coccinel & Slow Spirit

Saturday, September 17, 8:00 pm
$10
With J.R. Hill

Monsieur Coccinel is a bilingual folk/rock/pop group that makes music that is eclectic, amusing, cute, educative and nostalgic, making use of catchy riffs and poetic language.

The band was first formed in 2009 to compete in the Chicane électrique, where they won in the "most professional" and "best song" categories. Encouraged by their success, original group members Alexis Flower and Dominique Lemoine continued composing and were later joined by Renée Saurette, Cédric Lanthier and Ryan Tomko.

With Samantha Howden

Slow Spirit, formerly the Eric Roberts Quintet, was born in a basement rehearsal room at Brandon University, and have been exploring a genreless plane of music ever since.

While the jazz studies program at BU fed these young musicians’ hungry fascination of bebop, blues, and standard form, the band’s original compositions, fluid group dynamic and brave outlook on sound fuel the creative drive of a generation raised on hip hop, dance beats, electronic sound and digital sharing.

My 1000th Post!!! by Margaret Ullrich

Thank you for visiting!

It's been my pleasure to help spread the word about events happening in Winnipeg.
Winnipeg truly has it all!

Special events, charity events, discussions, art exhibits, classes, musical performances, fundraisers, book launches, politics....
The list is endless.

As when I was co-host on CKUW's Better Than Chocolate, I haven't posted about
big ticket items.
They have enough money to advertise.
Sorry, nothing about Wicked here.

If you are curious about what's happening at a certain venue in Winnipeg, please
scroll down to the links found under IT'S SHOWTIME!!!!
There you'll find Cinematheque, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and Uptown magazine,
as well as a few of Winnipeg's theatres, galleries and orchestras.

I hope you've found most of your visits useful or enjoyable.

I know there's only so much time you have to spare.
I've been checking the records that Blogger has on how often posts get visited.
I will focus on the types of events that you want to know about most.

I'm sorry if that means some items won't get posted in the future.

If you have a particular concern, please post a comment.
Your ideas are important to me.
Someone else might be thinking the same, but is too shy.

I was surprised by the stats on where you live.
I wasn't surprised by Canada - I imagine mostly Winnipeg - and the United States.
But many of you also live in Slovenia, Germany, Russian, Latvia, Iran, Netherlands, Ukraine, United Kingdom, India or France.
Wow!!
It's a small world.
Welcome to Winnipeg and I hope you've enjoyed what you've read.
I hope you will visit and see some of these events for yourself.

Once again, thank you, thank you, thank you!!
