Robert Chernomas & Ian Hudson: The Gatekeeper

March 6, 7:00 pm in the Atrium
The Gatekeeper: 60 Years of Economics According to the New York Times

Through a thorough examination of the Times’ star commentators and its coverage of the issues of macroeconomics, regulation, foreign policy and the 2008-2009 economic crisis, The Gatekeeper refocuses the debate about the left-wing or liberal/right-wing or conservative bias of the most venerable institution in U.S. journalism.

Robert Chernomas is a Professor of Economics at the University of Manitoba. He has published in both the academic and popular literature with respect to macroeconomics, the history of economic thought, health care economics, and in the area of the socio-economic determinants of health.

Ian Hudson is an Associate Professor of Economics at the University of Manitoba. His research focus has been on the role of politics in the process of economic development in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Ian is the co-author (with Robert Chernomas) of Social Murder and Other Shortcomings of Conservative Economics.

Jessica Valenti: The Purity Myth

March 6, 7:00 pm to 9:30 pm
The University of Winnipeg, 515 Portage Avenue,
Eckhardt-Gramatte Hall, 3rd floor of Centennial Hall
Panel Discussion & Reception with light snacks to follow

This screening is a partnership with Hollaback Winnipeg, The U of W Womyn's Centre,
and The UWSA.

In this video adaptation of her bestselling book, pioneering feminist blogger Jessica Valenti trains her sights on "the virginity movement", an unholy alliance of evangelical Christians, right-wing politicians, and conservative policy intellectuals who have been exploiting irrational fears about women's sexuality to roll back women's rights.

From dad-and-daughter "purity balls," taxpayer-funded abstinence-only curricula, and political attacks on Planned Parenthood, to recent attempts by legislators to de-fund women's reproductive health care and narrow the legal definition of rape, Valenti
identifies a single, unifying assumption:
the myth that the worth of a woman depends on what she does, or does not do, sexually.

Valenti argues that the health and well-being of women are too important to be left to ideologues bent on vilifying feminism and undermining women's autonomy.

Jessica Valenti, called the "poster girl for third-wave feminism" by Salon and one of the Top 100 Inspiring Women in the world by The Guardian, is the author of three books:
Full Frontal Feminism: A Young Woman's Guide to Why Feminism Matters, He's a Stud, She's a Slut... and 49 Other Double Standards Every Woman Should Know, and The Purity Myth: How America's Obsession with Virginity is Hurting Young Women

She is the editor of the anthology Yes Means Yes: Visions of Female Sexual Power and a World Without Rape, which was named one of the Top 100 Books of 2009 by Publishers Weekly. Jessica is also the founder of Feministing.com.  Jessica won the 2011 Hillman Journalism Prize for her work with Feministing.

She has appeared on The Colbert Report and the Today show, and was recently profiled in The New York Times Magazine under the headline "Fourth Wave Feminism."

She received her Masters degree in Women's and Gender Studies from Rutgers University, where she is a part-time lecturer.

Since WCWRC’s move to its new home at 640 Ellice St. the drop-in has seen a large increase in traffic. It is the heart of the centre and women repeatedly say that they find the space welcoming, warm and friendly.

Please Help the Winnipeg Film Group

I'm thrilled to see all of the support we've received in our February donation drive, moving towards our target of $10,000 by February 29 to help support the Winnipeg Film Group and our Cinematheque!

I'd like to personally thank all of the people and companies that have contributed to date, bringing us so much closer to our goal.

With February 29 a week away, I am asking you to consider a donation to our lovewfg.com campaign, if you have not already donated.

We're asking 300 more friends to consider donating $25, or more if you are able.

To learn more about our organization, I invite you to watch a 7 minute video at lovewfg.com.

The Winnipeg Film Group is a charitable organization.
Donations over $10 will receive a tax receipt.

Since 1974, the WFG has been promoting the art of cinema locally with a variety of programs and services. We’ve supported the development of countless filmmakers through all stages of their careers, and we’ve developed our Cinematheque into a
much-loved programming series to bring the very best in independent Canadian and world cinema to local audiences.

But it does take a community to sustain this organization, from volunteers, to audiences and filmmakers accessing our programs and services, to the funding bodies that support our work, right through to the important financial support of our donors.

Thank you for your support!

The Way of the Bachelor: Early Chinese Settlement in Manitoba.

The lives of early Japanese and Chinese settlers in British Columbia have come to define the Asian experience in Canada. Yet many Chinese men did not seek their destiny in British Columbia, but followed the railway east, settling in small Prairie towns and cities.

The Way of the Bachelor documents the religious beliefs and cultural practices that sustained Chinese bachelors in Manitoba.  In the absence of women and family, these men opened the region’s first laundries and developed a new kind of restaurant, the Chinese cafe. They maintained their ties to the Old World and negotiated a place for themselves in the new through a process called Dao, the way of the bachelor.

Alison R. Marshall is an associate professor in the Department of Religion at Brandon University and the receipient of the 2011 Manitoba Day Award from the Association for Manitoba Archives.

The Gentle Barn: Sponsoring & The Buddha Necklace

Sponsor a Gentle Barn Animal!

Because many of our animals have been severely abused before coming here, and because we have to make up for that abuse by giving them the best lives possible, their care is very expensive. One of the ways we can afford to care for them is by you sponsoring them.

We have 135 animals and they all need sponsors. Their sponsorship amounts vary from a $5 donation per month for a chicken to a $50 donation per month for a horse. We would be so grateful if you would become a Gentle Barn animal sponsor. You will get a picture and bio of your animal and a regular emailed update of how they are doing.

It is a great feeling knowing that your funds are going to care for an animal in need, that you can have a special relationship for the life of that animal and that you are a part of The Gentle Barn Family.  It also makes a great gift or a special way to honor a loved one.

Just go to our Virtual Barnyard and pick an animal that you love and that you can afford and get started! We cannot do this wonderful work without you, thank you!

The Buddha Necklace

The Buddha charm necklace is now for sale in our online store on our website.

At only $50, this one of a kind necklace designed by expert jeweler Jes MaHarry will be a lifetime show piece and supports the animals, with 100 percent of the sale going to The Gentle Barn.

Buddha is our first cow. Now 12 years old, she has taught love and empathy to well over 100, 000 children. She is a true healer.

The necklace is donated by Jess MaHarry, an exquisite jeweler and animal lover.

The Cost of Community: Jesus, St. Francis and Life in the Kingdom

“Blessed are the poor in spirit...” So begins the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus’ great message to everyone with ears to hear. St. Francis of Assisi heard its message and challenged the church and empire of his day.

Jamie Arpin-Ricci and his friends and neighbors in the new monastic community of
Little Flowers in urban Winnipeg likewise heard Jesus’ message and ordered their lives around it. This book is Jamie’s field report, offering surprising insights about what life together in the spirit of Jesus’ teachings offers us, and what it demands of us.

Jamie Arpin-Ricci is an urban missionary, pastor, and writer living in Winnipeg’s inner-city West End neighborhood. He is founding co-director of Youth With A Mission (YWAM) Urban Ministries Winnipeg with his wife, Kim.

Lots of people tell me they want more early shows (7-9pm). How many of you would be willing to sign up for a subscription to a four show series? You'd have to trust my programming instincts on some of the shows, though tickets would be transferrable, (but would have to be paid for upon purchasing the subscription). Regular admission to the shows would be $15-$20, but each four-show subscription package would be $50.00. Shows would be a mix of traveling and local acts, and the shows would be spaced over a period of 8-12 weeks (one every other week or so).
You can put your name on the list at the club, or leave me a message at 957-0982. - John Scoles
