The End of Growth

This event is co-presented by CBC Manitoba and hosted by
Larry Updike, host of CBC Radio One 89.3 FM/990 AM’s Up to Speed.

Jeff Rubin is the author of Why Your World Is About to Get a Whole Lot Smaller, a number one national bestseller and the Canadian Business Book of the Year.

In this follow-up, Rubin ponders what it will be like to live in a world where growth is over. Rubin believes that both politicians and economists are missing the fact that the real engine of economic growth has always been cheap, abundant resources.

The end of cheap oil signals the end of easy answers to renewing prosperity.
With China and India sucking up the lion’s share of the world’s ever more limited resources, the rest of us will have to make do with less.
But is this all bad? Can less actually be more?
Either way, it’s the new reality.

Rubin was the Chief Economist and Chief Strategist at CIBC World Markets, where he worked for over twenty years. He was one of the first economists to predict soaring oil prices back in 2000 and is one of the world’s most sought-after energy experts.
He blogs weekly for The Globe and Mail and lives in Toronto.

Deer Tick

Winnipeg Folk Festival presents
Deer Tick with special guests The Novaks and Turbo Fruits
presented with The Union
June 5
West End Cultural Centre
Doors at 7:15 pm, show at 8:00 pm
$22.50 in advance at the Winnipeg Folk Festival Music Store and through Ticketmaster

Deer Tick brings to the barroom stages on which they play. So much so that, “you can practically smell the sweat and beer," when you listen to the record.
Their new album Divine Providence is unlike one you’ve ever heard from the band before, as they’ve departed from their folk-country sound that has garnered so many accolades.
They recruited Adam Landry and Justin Collins to produce the 12 tracks that feature driving, distorted guitars and punk-rock vocals.
Guitarist Ian O’Neil and drummer Dennis Ryan take lead vocal duties on this record.
It’s typically been singer John McCauley who has written Deer Tick’s songs but, for the first time, all members wrote for this record.

MAWA: Moms & Scraps of Paper

MAWA, 611 Main Street
June 4, 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm

We are borrowing Colleen Leduc's art project idea.
We will draw or collage on the scraps of paper that come into our lives.

As moms and as artists it seems that there is a whirlwind of paper swirling through our lives. So collect cardboard and paper wrappers, receipts, tags etc. that have meaning for you and bring them and any art supplies that you want to use to the June meeting.
We will collage, draw or add text at the meeting.
We will provide pencil crayons and white acrylic gesso.

The first part of the meeting is for showing and speaking about your recent work.
So if you would like feedback, bring it along.

All mothers at any stage of mothering and who are artists are welcome.
These are free events that are meant to support and inspire you.
This will be our last meeting until September.

Being a subscriber to Vanity Fair and Vogue and having a mild obsession with Lady Gaga, Allison Marinelli's love affair for the outdoors often got pushed to the side. She conducted her research in a canoe trip over the 20 km Mantario trail.

With Paddling in Peeptoes, Allison was able to marry her two great loves, and prove that you can wear stilettos and still enjoy a good old fashioned canoe trip.

You Can’t Spoil A Baby

You Can’t Spoil A Baby is a year-round volunteer project created to provide low-income families with various sizes of baby clothes for the first year.

You Can’t Spoil A Baby collects new and gently used baby clothes from drop-off locations in and near Winnipeg.  The clothes are sorted, cleaned and placed into a gift bag, then presented to a family, complete with a greeting card.

Gift bags are available to families via self-nomination or community referrals, including social work staff at Women’s Hospital, Health Sciences Centre.

By donating to this project you are giving families the opportunity to spend their money on necessities such as food, baby supplies, transportation, bills, or savings.

You Can’t Spoil A Baby is one small action to show families that their community cares for them and it also provides them with a small amount of resources.

For information or to volunteer, call (204) 475-1285, or email Pamela Delisle.

GARAGELAND NEEDS VOLUNTEERS

CKUW's annual garage sale radio show, GARAGELAND, starts June 2 and runs every Saturday in June. We're still looking for field reporters - volunteers who go to garage sales and call in live to our CKUW hosts with their sale discoveries and stories.

If you've never been a Garageland reporter before, here's how it works:

* Choose any area of Winnipeg or a bit beyond the perimeter where you plan to go to garage sales.  It doesn't matter where you decide or how much ground you cover, we have listeners all over!

* You'll need a car or a bike or your feet, as well as a phone to call us at 774-6877.

* When you come across an interesting sale, person, piece of treasure or junk, call the on-air line and tell us about it!

* The show begins at 8 am, so you can call in any time after that. Around 10 - 10:30 am, field reporters often come down to the station with their best bargains and tales of their morning adventures. We'll compare prices and do a "show and tell" for the last half hour of the show.

If you have any questions about field reporting, or are only available for some of the morning that's okay!
Sign up on the volunteer bulletin board at the station. For more details, talk to staff.
Thanks, and have fun bargain hunting!

An Evening of Art & Music in support of Osborne House

June 2, 5:00 pm to 10:00 pm
Frame Arts Warehouse 318 Ross Ave Exchange District
This event will be catered.
Everyone is welcome!
Tickets are $10 at the door.
Items can be dropped during this event.

Meghan Duffield will be hosting an Art Auction & Fundraiser for Osborne House Inc.
All money collected goes directly to Osborne House inc.

There will be amazing pieces available to bid on, and a few of my favorite local musicians will play throughout the evening!  I'd like to thank both the Artists and Musicians for donating their talent, time & positive energy.
Please make independent donations. Whether it be $$ or clothing, bedding, toys.
I can get these items to the Shelter.

Osborne House Inc. empowers women and their children who are experiencing domestic abuse by providing them with a safe and supportive environment.

3 out of 7 homicides in Winnipeg this year so far have been the result of domestic violence.

The shelter is experiencing its own crisis; unless it receives the funding and attention it deserves, Osborne House will close.

This shelter is one of the largest in Canada.  It provides a safe place for woman and children who have found the courage to leave their abusive relationships.  They leave in most cases with no plan, and only the clothes on their back.

It is crucial that our Federal and Provincial governments recognize the need for Osborne House, and protect this organization.

Haunter Album Fundraiser w/ Departures

Lo Pub
June 1, 9:00 pm
$5

Haunter is putting out an album this summer, and since it's very expensive, we decided to throw a big party where we can play songs for you.

What better reason do you need to go to a show than supporting local music?
And local bars.
And local beer.
Right?

Haunter is rock and roll. They play electric guitar rock full of pop hooks, ambitious melodies and a rhythm section that explodes like a house on fire. Lead singer Matt Williams is fearless and intelligent. This is hopeful, celebratory music that inspires and takes risks, equal parts truth and imagination.

Departures are four men and one woman from Winnipeg, Manitoba.
They have been steadily building good will for the past two years.
Departures has shared the stage with Women, Handsome Furs, Braids, Born Ruffians, Friendo, Boats and many others.

Departures has recently recorded their debut album with Howard Bilerman (Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Vic Chesnutt, Arcade Fire).

Wasagaming Community Arts, 110 Wasagaming Drive, Wasagaming, MB

SLOW CRAFT takes as its starting point the issues emerging from the broader Slow Movement that developed as a response to our fast-paced Western lifestyles and our consumer culture.
Slowness is often associated with craft.
Craft skills take time to learn; craft processes cannot be rushed.
Makers are developing critical positions in response to our consumer behavior, questioning modes of production through new processes, looking at issues of stewardship and sustainability as well as collective making and the reworking of everyday objects.

SLOW CRAFT will represent approximately 15 Manitoban craft artists whose work reflects fresh approaches to diverse cultural and material traditions.

Juried by Sandra Alfoldy, Jennifer Gibson and Alan Lacovetsky.

Pride Winnipeg is pleased to announce that community leaders and  human rights activists Chris Vogel and Richard North will lead this year’s Pride Parade on June 3.

Chris and Richard will also speak at the rally at 11:30 am on the grounds of the Manitoba legislature, to kick off the parade through downtown.

Here are some of the highlights of their contributions:
Chris and Richard became involved in the Campus Gay Club at the University of Manitoba 1973 just as the organization was evolving into Manitoba’s first gay liberation organization, Gays for Equality, which introduced queer rights issues to Manitoba politics in the provincial election of 1973.

The movement for human rights protection continued with little success for 12 years. Chris and Richard’s involvement culminated in a 59-day hunger strike in 1985 to protest the failure of the government to include sexual orientation as a  prohibited ground for discrimination in the Manitoba Human Rights Act.

In 1974 they were married in the Unitarian Church of Winnipeg. They took the  provincial government to court when the Registrar of Vital Statistics refused to register their union. This was the first case in Canadian law to challenge the  exclusion of same-sex couples from civil marriage in Canada. They were  subsequently involved in the legal campaign for spousal benefits, which began  with a human rights complaint in 1982.

Chris and Richard were involved in organizing gay pride celebrations, with speakers, films, and discussion panels at the Universities of Manitoba and Winnipeg in 1974 and 1975. They also helped organize the 2nd National Gay Conference, which was held in Winnipeg in 1974 and included the first gay march  in Winnipeg.

In 1978, they helped establish the Council on Homosexuality and Religion and the weekly radio program “Gay Christian Forum,” later “Gaysweek,” on CJUM-FM.  This radio program ran from 1978 until 1980. Chris then hosted a weekly cable  television program “Coming Out,” from 1980 until 1994.

In 1980, they helped found the Oscar Wilde Memorial Society, which operates Gio’s (originally called Giovanni’s Room after James Baldwin’s classic gay novel). Gio’s was originally part of the Winnipeg Gay Community Centre, and opened in 1982 on Sherbrook Street across from Happenings.

A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words

It may be a cliché but A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words, curated by Curatorial Intern Frances Gail, consists of more than three dozen artworks inspired by the written word, drawing from richly varied literary, poetic, and mythological traditions.

It continues until July 29.

Chosen largely from the Winnipeg Art Gallery’s 20th century collection, they include examples of painting, printmaking, photography, sculpture, contemporary studio ceramics, and decorative art.

“Artists have long been inspired by great works of fiction or poetry, bringing them to life through paint or stone,” says WAG Chief Curator Helen Delacretaz.

Included in the exhibition are two ink drawings by Bertram Brooker, inspired by the writings of Russian writer Fyodor Dostoevsky. Also on view is Métis artist Rosalie Favell’s captivating photograph entitled I awoke to find my spirit had returned (1999), reimagining an episode from The Wizard of Oz.
Engaging, large scale contemporary ceramic work by Akio Takamori, Maurice Savoie, and Jordon Van Sewell refer to mythological legends from ancient Greece, Rome, and China.
Aboriginal myths and legends are invoked by the work of Norval Morisseau, Jackson Beardy, Abraham Anghik Ruben and Kiugak Ashoona.

Show at 8 pm

Born and raised in Winnipeg and now calling Saskatchewan home, Belgium Rootstime Magazine described Cathleen Lesperance as "..a clear and pure voice…destined to appear on many stages”.
The follow-up to her full length "Gypsy As I Go" released in 2008, "Brilliant Bright" offers 11 self penned songs featuring her unique voice, where roots music and story meet soul.

Raised in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, Wade Fehr has been writing songs and honing his guitar skills for over fifteen years. Ranging in musical styles from blues and rock to country and bluegrass, he has called himself a "creatively confused" songwriter.

In 2009 Fehr released "The Bottle and a Grave", a six song EP featuring a full band.
In May of 2012 Fehr is releasing the follow up titled "Sooner of Later".
