Critical Mass(ive) Reunion Ride

June 29, 5:00 pm
Walk, roller blade, bicycle, skateboard...
Everyone is welcome, just meet at Central Park, 400 Cumberland Avenue,
the last Friday of every month at 5 pm.

Monthly in cities around the world, bicyclists take over the streets in an "organized co-incidence" called Critical Mass. Riding along several hundred strong, hooting and hollering, whistling, laughing and singing; it is a coup on wheels, a clever tactical strike against our oil-dependent culture.

Why reunion?
With several recent cycling casualties, this city needs a reminder of our presence
and rights to the road.

The 2012 TD Winnipeg International Jazz Festival presents
with guests HAUNTER

Advance tickets are only $18 and are available online, by phone at 989-4656

Presented by REFRESH, 101.5 UMFM, and CKUW 95.9FM

For Brooklyn-based The Antlers, what started out as a solo lo-fi folk project of Peter Silberman evolved into a colossal-sounding chamber pop group. After self-recording a handful of albums, Silberman set forth to record his opus, Hospice, in 2007.

Haunter’s line-up consists of: Matt Williams (lead vocals/guitar), Jory Hasselmann (guitar), Marie-France Hollier (bass), Ryan Coates (drums) and Cole Woods (guitar). They are grateful to have shared the stage with artists such as Attack In Black, Julie Doiron, Oxford Collapse, Women, Hey Rosetta! and the Handsome Furs. Haunter is finishing up work on their debut full-length album, due out on Disintegration Records this summer.

Oak Hammock Marsh: Summer Bird Census

June 24, 6:45 am to noon
Call us at 467-3300 to register before June 21.
After the morning walk, a lunch will be served and prizes awarded.

Each year, the Oak Hammock Marsh Interpretive Centre conducts a series of surveys to count the animals found at the Marsh. Some surveys are done daily, some weekly and others yearly.

Surveys are a great way to learn more about wetlands and animals, and get involved in conservation efforts.

The annual Summer Bird Census helps determine which species of birds nest at the marsh and is a great way to improve bird observation skills.

Teams of volunteers, consisting of one expert and some novices, walk a section of the dike system, recording everything seen and heard.

The Oak Hammock Marsh Interpretive Centre is located 20 minutes north of Winnipeg on highway 67 between highways #7 and #8.

Through the Eyes of The Wean: Growing Up on the South Side of Glasgow

The “wean” was an affectionate term for the youngest child in a family. Alison recalls her childhood growing up with two older brothers in “The Gorbals”, an area of Glasgow, Scotland, that has been described as “the worst slums in Europe”.
Although life is not easy and material comfort is scarce, even the roughest dwelling is scrubbed until it shines, and a trip to the seaside for some fresh air is never far away.

Alison Hutchison emigrated to Canada as a young adult in the 1960’s, married, and lives in Manitoba.

Celebration of the life of Blair MacLean
and the career of MacLean & MacLean
June 21, 7:00 pm in the Atrium
Was it Something We Said?

Hosted by Marcia MacLean, featuring an appearance by Al Simmons and a musical tribute by The MacLean Brothers.
This special event celebrates the career of MacLean & MacLean through comedy, stories and song.
MacLean & MacLean were a legendary Canadian duo best known for their raunchy, often satirical humour combined with renditions of folk and popular songs, with Blair playing guitar and Gary playing banjo and bongo drums. Their career took them around the world, from the Just for Laughs festival in Montreal to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
Controversial for their use of language, they had to appeal for the right to perform at the Supreme Court of Canada. The brothers won the case, toured for nearly three decades and performed for the last time not long before Gary MacLean died in 2001.
Blair MacLean died in 2008 at age 65. Before he died, Blair captured many memorable stories in this book Was it Something We Said?

Finding Gloria

Finding Gloria is the story of Marianne Curtis, a woman given up at birth and adopted by a family that settled in Southern Manitoba. The book chronicles Curtis’ upbringing in a home from which she eventually ran away. As a ward of Child and Family Services, she struggled to find herself after those years of abuse. After her adoptive mother’s death, Curtis discovered her birth family. In the process she found the love, peace and acceptance missing from the first forty years of her life.

Joshua: Believers Church Bible Commentary

In an age when ethnic nationalism continues to give rise to conflict, we dare not avoid critical engagement with biblical texts that have been used to justify colonialism, conquest, occupation, and ethnic cleansing.

Gordon Matties advocates for the book of Joshua even as he engages in a difficult conversation with it. Matties calls for “an openness to the unexpected.” He suggests that reading Joshua will open windows into how and why we read Scripture at all.

Matties is professor of biblical studies at Canadian Mennonite University. He also contributed to Abingdon Press’s The New Interpreter’s Study Bible. Matties has led numerous study tours to Israel/Palestine.

Fresher, a new pop/rock musical that took Edinburgh by storm is being presented this summer at the Winnipeg Fringe Festival.

This winner of Best New Musical at the MTM:UK Awards, follows five freshmen students as they embark on their first year of university. Awkward drinking games, convoluted love triangles and raging hormones await the students as they negotiate the minefield of first impressions at school.

This amazing new score with witty humour and an incredible young triple-threat cast make this musical a charmer for anyone who is in university or anyone who went to university. A story that both resonates and entertains.

She’s been called “a true visionary… one of the most important signings of my career” by Sean “Diddy” Combs. For singer, songwriter, and high funkstress Janelle Monáe, the impetus remains the same as it’s been since before her two Grammy-nominated releases Metropolis, Suite I: The Chase and The ArchAndroid; her focus remains on stirring your soul, moving your feet and creating good music.

Monáe’s live shows are a soaring orchestral trip enlivened with blockbuster vocals, mysterious imagery and notes of Sixties pop and jazz. She’s strongly influenced by Michael Jackson, Prince and David Bowie and you’re going to love the dance moves.

For Brooklyn-based The Antlers, what started out as a solo lo-fi folk project of
Peter Silberman evolved into a colossal-sounding chamber pop group.

Haunter’s line-up consists of: Matt Williams (lead vocals/guitar), Jory Hasselmann (guitar), Marie-France Hollier (bass), Ryan Coates (drums) and Cole Woods (guitar). They have shared the stage with artists such as Attack In Black, Julie Doiron, Oxford Collapse, Women, Hey Rosetta! and the Handsome Furs. Haunter is finishing up their debut
full-length album, due out this summer.

After self-recording a handful of albums, Silberman set forth to record his opus, Hospice, in 2007. The band followed that up with the more electronic-minded Burst Apart, in 2011. They’ve toured the world, blending the ambient with the anthemic in their live shows.
