The annual Burns dinner at Thornford Regis is an occasion for bagpipes, haggis and scotch. It ends up an occasion for tragedy when Will Moir, one of the pipers, is found dead.
Father Tom Christmas, the vicar of the town, is one of the first to find out that Will Moir was poisoned. Brimming with wit, laced with genuine surprise and featuring a memorable detective, Eleven Pipers Piping mines the rich history of a small town to solve the crime.

C.C. Benison worked as a writer for the Winnipeg Free Press in the 1980s. He has contributed to numerous magazines, newspapers, and corporate communications. Currently associate editor of Canada’s History magazine, he also writes award-winning mystery novels. He is at work on his next mystery, Ten Lords A-Leaping.

Chronic Condition:
Why Canada’s Health Care System Needs to Be Dragged into the 21st Century

Medicare is the third rail of Canadian politics.
Jeffrey Simpson explores the only four options we have to end this growing crisis: cuts in spending, tax increases, privatization, and reaping savings through increased efficiency. He finds that other countries have more extensive public health systems, and Canadian health care produces only average value for money. In fact, our rigid system for some health care needs and a costly system for other needs is really the worst of both worlds.

Jeffrey Simpson has been The Globe and Mail’s national affairs columnist for more than twenty-five years. He is also an award-winning author of eight previous books, including Discipline of Power, which won a Governor General’s Award, and is an officer of the Order of Canada. He lives in Ottawa with his family.

When New Zealand-born anthropologist Diamond Jenness set off as a member of Vilhjalmur Stefansson’s Canadian Arctic Expedition, he had little idea of what lay ahead. KATALOG - ISSUE 8: Humors (the body fluid issue)

"From mixture of the four [humors] in different weights, [God the most high] created different organs; one with more blood like muscle, one with more black bile like bone, one with more phlegm like brain, and one with more yellow bile like lung. [God the most high] created the souls from the softness of humors; each soul has it own weight and amalgamation. "

You can't recognize the body as an instrument of creation unless you are willing to recognize the fluids within.

KATALOG is looking for performance photos, videos and write ups on performances which incorporate bodily fluids, their concept, idea or inspiration.

KATALOG is an online publication with video and sound capabilities which is dedicated to the practice of performance and live art. In this issue we focus on artworks that deals with the object as an accompaniment or as the main focus of a performative work.

This call is open for artists from all disciplines from around the globe. The online component of KATALOG makes it an international magazine that expands the audience of your work and allows it to be permanently available on our website.

Roo Borson has published ten books of poems, most recently Short Journey Upriver Toward Ôishida, winner of the Griffin Poetry Prize. She has also won awards for her essays, and, with Kim Maltman, writes collaboratively under the pen name Baziju.

It culminates in a fierce fire-fight when the alarm goes off at a pivotal moment and the Special Forces team are forced back up into the mountains, chased by hundreds of vengeful Taliban and Al Quada terrorists.  Russ McDevitt toured Australia in a boxing troupe for 3 years; he was a military cop for 6 years.

Shawna Dempsey and Lorri Millan's “Bedtime Stories” l Winnipeg Now Artist Panel with KC Adams and Dominique Rey

November 2 and 16 and December 7, 8:30 pm
Included with Gallery admission

Bedtime stories aren’t just for kids!
Certainly not when they are told by performance artist Shawna Dempsey as she reads from the very adult book Bedtime Stories for the Edge of the World, written by performance artists Lorri Millan and Shawna as part of the WAG exhibition Winnipeg Now which features the work of 13 of Winnipeg’s most creative artists.

Our interest was in the women of the ‘New World.’ So our tales follow pirate queens, inventrixes, sideshow performers, plucky spinsters, religious zealots, and office workers. Through them we are looking at ideas that shape North American’s notion of itself and its dreams for the future.

Fields - Leo Simoens

Fields - Leo Simoens
to December 8
Opening Reception: November 2, 5 - 8 pm (the artist will be present)

Spanning approximately 30 years, this print-based retrospective features work that highlights the artist’s particular relationship to landscape, meditation and contemplation. Pre-occupied with how ‘forgotten corners’ of the landscape can evoke feelings of sadness and melancholy and, on the other hand, hope and well being, Simoens strives ‘to produce images that communicate an aesthetic awareness of our places’.

One of Manitoba’s master print makers, Simoens is a long-standing member of the Winnipeg arts community, graduated from the University of Manitoba School of Art with a BFA Honours in 1974. He has worked as a graphic designer and taught drawing and graphic design at Red River College.

Opening Reception - November 2 at 7 pm
Show runs from November 2 to December 15

The Undesirables is a show of large scale sculpture. It features work by five Winnipeg artists, all recent graduates of the Sculpture Program at the University of Manitoba, and is curated by Sarah Anne Johnson and Meeka Walsh.

While the works are diverse in form, ranging from a life-size dinosaur to an installation inspired by religious architecture, all are portraits exploring disparaging circumstances, conditions, or states of being.  A nursing home room gestures to a ship that's run aground, a kinetic hot air balloon continuously deflates, and a towering, bubbling cloud ghoul is engulfed by invasive parasites.

Arts & Cultural Day at the Leg!

November 1, 4:30 pm

We want to ensure Manitoba’s MLAs and Ministers know just how important artists, arts and cultural organizations, and the creative sector are to the vibrancy of our community, future prosperity and economy.

MACA will be coordinating meetings with the MLAs and Ministers and we need artists, board members of cultural organizations, arts managers, supporters, patrons, and arts educators of all ages to speak convincingly and passionately about how arts and culture have positively impacted Manitoba.

Architectural Tour of the Winnipeg Art Gallery

November 4 & 25 at 2 pm
Admission is free but space is limited.
Please call 786.6641 ext. 227 or email  to reserve your spot.

When designing the WAG building, Gustavo da Roza (Number Ten Architecture group) drew inspiration from the triangular piece of land on which it sits. Its unusual shape and gleaming Tyndall stone exterior made it a landmark in downtown Winnipeg.

Built in 1971, the Winnipeg Art Gallery is regarded as one of the finest late-modernist buildings in the country. Join architectural historian Susan Algie from the Winnipeg Architectural Foundation for an in-depth tour and learn about the architect, the design, and the history of this important structure.

As mid-century buildings age and hit the 50 year mark, the concept of “modernist heritage” is becoming more important. The tour will examine the state of preservation of Winnipeg’s modernist buildings, situating the Winnipeg Art Gallery building in its architectural context and look at the role architecture has played in rejuvenating Winnipeg’s downtown since the 1970s.

Manito Ahbee Festival

October 31 - November 4

From hoop dances to hip-hop, the Manito Ahbee Festival brings together people from all nations to celebrate Aboriginal culture.

Manito Ahbee comes from a sacred site located in the Whiteshell Provincial Park where traditional teachings and wisdom have long been shared.

The Manito Ahbee Festival brings that spirit of sharing to an urban environment with such events as:
The Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Awards and Red Carpet
The Indigenous Marketplace and Trade Show
The International Competition Pow Wow

From the traditional to the trendsetting, Manito Ahbee Festival celebrates the past, present and future. It’s more than a festival. It’s an experience.
