Winnipeg Art Gallery: Janet Cardiff: Forty-Part Motet

Forty-Part Motet reworks Spem in Alium by 16th century English composer Thomas Tallis. Involving 40 separately recorded choir voices played back through 40 speakers positioned around the gallery, the 14-minute work creates a deeply moving effect.
Most people experience this piece in their living rooms in front of only two speakers. Even in a live concert the audience is separated from the individual voices. I wanted to be able to climb inside the music. says Cardiff
Translated as “hope in any other,” Spem in Alium is believed to have been composed in honour of the 40th birthday of Queen Elizabeth I in 1573. Cardiff’s version features the voices of the Salisbury Cathedral Choir.
Editions of Janet Cardiff: Forty-Part Motet are owned by the Tate Gallery (London), the Museum of Modern Art (New York), and the National Gallery of Canada.

Drawn and Fired exhibits his drawings produced over the past three years, complemented by examples of his ceramics from the WAG’s collection.
Honoured in 2003 with the Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts, Archambeau was the first Manitoba artist to be recognized with this prestigious award.
