Saving Lake Winnipeg
Lake Winnipeg was recognized by the Global Nature Fund as the world's "Threatened Lake of the Year" for 2013. The toxin produced by the bacteria that bloom in Lake Winnipeg each summer is now being detected in water bodies across Canada. The deteriorating state of the lake and the pervasive presence of these toxins must now be recognized as a growing threat to both Canada and the United States.
Robert William Sandford is a respected authority on freshwater issues as they relate to climate change and disruption. In 2011 he was invited to be an adviser on water issues by the InterAction Council. He is the author of 20 books on the history and ecology of the Canadian mountain West.

Steven Heighton is the author of the novel Afterlands, a New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice, and The Shadow Boxer. Heighton’s most recent novel, Every Lost Country, was a Globe & Mail Best Book. Heighton has been nominated for the Governor General’s Literary Award, the Trillium Award, and Britain’s W.H. Smith Award.

Don Newman invites you beyond the broadcast. Featuring an on-stage conversation with The Honourable Dr. Lloyd Axworthy, President and Vice-Chancellor at the University of Winnipeg.
Hosted by Terry MacLeod, host of the Weekend Morning Show on CBC Radio One.

Newman has written about his many decades of reporting on Canadian and international politics; from starting as a print and broadcast journalist in Winnipeg then joining Toronto’s Globe and Mail, to becoming CTV’s first Washington correspondent and helping to launch CBC Newsworld.   As senior parliamentary editor of CBC Television News, he anchored live specials and his own national political affairs programs. He helped launch Canada’s first all-news channel, reported for The National, and was a foreign correspondent, with CTV and CBC.

Newman is the Chairman of Canada 2020, a non-partisan forum to further Canadians' political, social and economic well-being.  He is a Member of the Order of Canada, and the recipient of numerous awards, including a Gemini lifetime achievement award in public affairs broadcasting.
