Saving Lake Winnipeg

Lake Winnipeg was recognized by the Global Nature Fund as the world's "Threatened Lake of the Year" for 2013. The toxin produced by the bacteria that bloom in Lake Winnipeg each summer is now being detected in water bodies across Canada. The deteriorating state of the lake and the pervasive presence of these toxins must now be recognized as a growing threat to both Canada and the United States.

Robert William Sandford is a respected authority on freshwater issues as they relate to climate change and disruption. In 2011 he was invited to be an adviser on water issues by the InterAction Council. He is the author of 20 books on the history and ecology of the Canadian mountain West.

Smith Award.

Newman is the Chairman of Canada 2020, a non-partisan forum to further Canadians' political, social and economic well-being.  He is a Member of the Order of Canada, and the recipient of numerous awards, including a Gemini lifetime achievement award in public affairs broadcasting.
