Lydia's Pub: Ariel Gordon, Jonathan Ball, John Toone

Sunday October 3 don't miss Tonight It's Poetry, an amazing night of poetry and performance with 3 of Canada's most talented young authors. 

The evening begins at 8:00 p. m. and continues to midnight.

Come and hear:
Ariel Gordon, a Winnipeg-based writer and editor.  She has 2 chapbooks, The navel gaze and Guidelines: Malaysia & Indonesia, and a full-length poetry collection, Hump  to her credit. 
She recently won the John Hirsch Award for Most Promising Manitoba Writer at the Manitoba Book Awards. 
Ariel likes tromping through the woods and taking macro photographs of mushrooms.

Jonathan Ball is the author of the poetry books Ex Machina and the forthcoming Clockfire. His film Spoony B appeared on The Comedy Network, and his writing has appeared in The Believer and Harper’s
He is the former editor of dandelion and the former short films programmer for the Gimli Film Festival. 
He holds a Ph.D. in English with a focus in Creative Writing from the University of Calgary.

John Toone has published a collection of poetry, From Out of Nowhere, and 2 kids’ books Catch that Catfish! and Hope and the Walleye
His poems also appear in the story Sixgun Quixote from the new graphic novel The Imagination Manifesto

Winnipeg International Writers Festival






Winnipeg International Writers Festival welcomes: 

Sandra Birdsell at the Manitoba Theatre for Young People on Sept. 22 at 8:00 pm where she will be discussing Family Business with Sharon McCartney, Uma Parameswaran, Craig Francis Power and Michael Wex. 
On Sept. 23, Sandra will be at the Nooner at the Millennium Library at 12:15 p. m., and then on to the Portage la Prairie Regional Library at 7:00 p. m. 
On Sept. 24, she will be at Brandon University for a reading at 11:00 a. m. 


On Sept. 23 at 4:00 p. m. George Murray will be at the Downtown Red River College and on Sept. 24 at 2:30 p. m. at the University of Winnipeg in a panel with Sina Queryas. 
On Sept. 24 George will also be at the Manitoba Theatre for Young People at 8:00 p. m. for the Poetry Bash with Ariel Gordon, Nora Gould, Ignatius T. Mabasa, kevin mcpherson eckoff, and Sina Queryas.


Allan Stratton will be taking part in the School Program where he will be discussing his latest novel, Borderline, which looks at friendship in the face of racial profiling. 
The film based on Allan's novel Chanda’s Secrets is entered by South Africa as its official entry for the 2011 Academy Awards.  


Look for Judith Keenan on the Mainstage for Celebrating Paul Quarrington at the Manitoba Theatre for Young People on Sept. 25 at 8:00 p. m. 
Judith is Executive Producer of BookShorts Inc./BookShorts Literacy Program.  She produced her first video in 1994 and now has to her credit hundreds of video news features, 20 short films and an 8-episode national TV series.


With roots that go back to the late 1980s, Winnipeg’s irrepressible Aboriginal Writers Collective will be performing at the AfterWords at Aqua Books on Sept. 24 at 10:30 p.m. 
Come and meet Duncan Mercredi, Jordan Wheeler, Shayla Elizabeth, Maeengan Linklater, Marie Annharte Baker, Trevor Greyeyes, and Katherena Vermette.

Aqua Books: Soapbox Open Mic

Every third Tuesday of the month, Aqua Books presents an open mic series Soapbox, hosted by Bookstore Owner Kelly Hughes. 

Soapbox starts at 7:00 p.m. and consists of two open mic sets and a short break in between.

On Thursday, July 8 the Aqua Books Emerging Writer-in-Residence, hannah_g, will be featured.  She is a visual artist and writer who was born in Billericay, England.  Her practice centres around stories and intervention in order to engender enchantment in everyday life.  hannah is currently the programmer of the artist-run centre, aceartinc.

This is Winnipeg's only cross-genre open mic series.  Bring your fiction, memoirs, fragments, poetry, songs and anything you've written for your 4 minutes of fame.

Aqua Books: Gillian Sze, Ariel Gordon & Chandra Mayor

Please come for an evening of readings by Writer-in-Residence Gillian Sze and resident Aqua poets Ariel Gordon and Chandra Mayor. The event will take place from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Aqua Books, located at 274 Garry Street (between Graham & Portage) on Thursday, June 10.


Gillian Sze was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Her poetry collection, Fish Bones, was shortlisted for the QWF McAuslan First Book Prize. She is the author of 3 chapbooks and her work has appeared in national and international journals. She is also co-founder and co-editor of Branch Magazine. The Anatomy of Clay, a poetry collection, will be published in 2011.

After Gillian appeared at Aqua last summer, bookstore owner Kelly Hughes was eager to have her as Writer-in-Residence during June, 2010. Gillian has a Master’s degree in Creative Writing from Concordia University. She resides in Montreal.


Ariel Gordon's first book of poetry, Hump, was published in 2010. She recently won the John Hirsch Award for Most Promising Manitoba Writer at the Manitoba Book Awards. Ariel likes tromping through the woods and taking macro photographs of mushrooms.


Chandra Mayor is a Winnipeg writer, editor and shop girl. She is the award-winning author of 3 books, including the short story collection All the Pretty Girls, which was the recipient of the Lambda Award for Lesbian Fiction.
