The Films of Winston Washington Moxam

No Man Can Define Me: The Films of Winston Washington Moxam
Curated & Introduced by Scott Birdwise
Winnipeg Cinematheque, 100 Arthur Street
February 1, 7:00 pm

FREE ADMISSION!

A retrospective of the films of Winston Washington Moxam (1963-2011).

Moxam's work spans two decades and includes short fiction, documentary, and two features. These works address issues of race, racism and social justice, and reflect the experience of living in Manitoba.

The screening includes his shorter works and his first feature length film Barbara James (2001), a single black woman who, facing an unplanned pregnancy, must come to grips with her life. Barbara James is a strong example of Moxam’s oeuvre - a concern with race and social justice, an emphasis on narrative, and a realist style with surreal flourishes.

There will also be the launch of a catalogue published by the Winnipeg Film Group, containing essays by Scott Birdwise, Daniel Eskin and Mathew Rankin, with a filmography and photographs of Moxam and stills from his films.

This Hisses Anhedonia Album Release Concert

This Hisses is Julia Ryckman, who can croon an aria and/or break glass, Patrick Short, wrangler of ghostly harmonies, and JP Perron, wrecker of all things wood and skin.
Alumni of a variety of stalwart Winnipeg bands, both vicious and arty (The Gorgon, Under Pressure and Mahogany Fro), This Hisses formed in early 2010.
The band's debut album Surf Noir in the summer of 2011, captured a punkier and more primeval version of the band.

Morris Panych's The Dishwashers

Prairie Theatre Exchange, Portage Place
to February 10, 2013

The Dishwashers by Morris Panych
Featuring:
 Rylan Wilkie        Emmett
 Tom Anniko         Dressler
 Harry Nelken       Moss
 Toby Hughes       Burroughs

We can’t all be rich and successful.
If everybody was at the top of the heap, there wouldn’t be a heap.

Emmett, once a high-rolling patron of a high-end eatery, is now a dishwasher in that same restaurant.
His mentor is Dressler, the philosophizing ruler of all he surveys.
Emmett's co-worker, Moss, doesn’t realize he’d been fired weeks ago.
A hilarious journey into the unseen, steamy world of the up-scale restaurant “dish-pit”.

Morris Panych's The Overcoat is touring worldwide.  its film version won an honourable mention at the Prix Italia.  Panych's plays have been produced in over a dozen languages.

I’m a great fan of Morris Panych… a play that examines the nature of what work means… in a world where ‘you are what you do,’ (The Dishwashers) belongs on the stage…
I am very proud of the five new plays chosen to celebrate PTE’s 40th anniversary.  Not only are they all Canadian writers, but all of the playwrights are currently writing and their work resonates with contemporary themes.
Artistic Director, Robert Metcalfe

Rylan Wilkie, last seen at PTE in The Edible Woman, has won the Betty Mitchell Award for his performance in Vincent in Brixton.  He was in the Canadian premiere productions of Enron and Proof.

Winnipeg favourite Harry Nelken has been associated with PTE for 38 years.  His selected PTE credits are: Cold Comfort; The Chinese Man Said Goodbye; The Stone Angel; and Zadie's Shoes.  His next project is Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre's Other People's Money.

Tom Anniko, along with Al Rae, created the Winnipeg Comedy Festival, and has appeared in numerous film and television productions.  The Goat, at the Warehouse Theatre, was his most recent theatrical performance in Winnipeg.

Toby Hughes is a founding member of the musical improve company Outside Joke, and has performed in Henry IV 1&2 and Henry V at Shakespeare in the Ruins and in The Courier at the Winnipeg Fringe Festival.

The launch will include a guest performance by throat singer Nikki Komaksiutiksak and a reading by Nichola Tookoome Batzel in addition to a short talk by Keavy Martin.

Light refreshments will be served.

Nikki Komaksiutiksak has represented Canadian Aboriginals at venues such as the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta. She has recording music with the Weakerthans, Moses Mayes and Susan Aglukark.

Nichola Tookoome Batzel is an Inuk educator in Winnipeg and an advocate for Inuit issues throughout the province.

Creation & Transformation: Defining Moments in Inuit Art
January 25 - April 14
Opening Reception January 25, 7 pm

Creation & Transformation describes the genesis and evolution of contemporary Inuit art from its inception to the present day: from carvers in the 1950s, such as Johnny Inukpuk, to later storytellers in stone, such as Davidialuk Alasua Amittu, and in whalebone, such as Karoo Ashevak;from pioneer graphic artist Jessie Oonark to artists working today in new and personal idioms, such as Shuvinai Ashoona.

“The exhibition offers insight into some of the defining moments of Inuit art,” says Darlene Coward Wight, Curator of Inuit Art.

The book accompanying the publication, by Coward Wight, includes essays by art historians Susan Gustavision, Ingo Hessel, Christine Lalonde, and Norman Vorano. Unist'ot'en Resistance Solidarity Dinner: Brett Rhyno

January 21, 5:00 pm
Phone (204) 946-5241

The Unist'ot'en Camp is a resistance community whose purpose is to protect sovereign Wet'suwet'en territory from proposed pipelines from the Tar Sands Gigaproject and shale gas from Hydraulic Fracturing Projects in the Peace River Region.

The camp is located at the shore of the Wedzin Kwah and mouth of the Gosnell Creek. These are all tributary to the the Skeena, Bulkley, and Babine Rivers. The proposed pipelines from Enbridge Northern Gateway and Pacific Trails seek to cross the rivers where the resistance camp is on the Unis’tot’en Territory of Talbits Kwah.

The Unist'ot'en along with other allies will stop this destructive path, for the future generations, for the biodiversity, and for solidarity with our neighbours living amidst the heavy impacts in the Tar Sands Affected areas in Northern Alberta, and regions heavily affected by Fracking Natural Gas and Shale Oil.

Occupy Winter. We ♥ Our Fourth Season

National Parks across Canada
January 19 and 20, 2013
We invite Canadians from coast to coast to coast to plan a day or half a day or a weekend in the national park closest to you on January 19 or 20. Show our Environment Minister that we LOVE our national parks in the Fourth Season, the season that was eliminated from Parks Canada's operations.
WHAT WE WANT TO SEE
1. A reversal of the policy back to four season parks.
2. Dialogue with Canadians about what we want as winter services.
3. Parks Canada understanding that winter is part of our national identity.

Petition to let the Environment Minister, the CEO for Parks Canada, and the Prime Minister know that we want to see a reversal of the policy that eliminated winter as the fourth season in our national parks.

THE ISSUES
1. Canada is a country that is distinctly northern.
2. Our national parks are iconic places for healthy outdoor activity, self-propelled forms of winter activity and recreation.
3. Access to these winter services was included within the calculation of admission fees to each national park.
4. Winter offers Parks Canada an opportunity to market winter as a distinct season, collect revenues, and partner with local businesses to offer "the winter experience in Canada".

India’s Daughter l Black Bindi Vigil for Jyoti Singh Pandey, Gang-Raped and Murdered in India l Candlelight Vigil l News Coverage l two-finger rape test petition l Release Fridays: SAKHI to end violence against women

Added March 6, 2015

Interview with Mukesh Singh, India gang-rapist, gets documentary banned

India on trial: Why is sexual violence so prevalent in the country?

India's Daughter is being aired around the world to coincide with International Women's Day (March 8) and will be shown in more than 15 countries around the world. It is a UK-India co-production of Assassin Films and Tathagat Films.
Before the film was even released it has been banned in India and has caused much upheaval. We encourage you take part in this important issue.

****
January 26 at 5:00 am until January 27 at 4:00am in EST

Her name was Jyoti. Her name means Light of God.

Jyoti Laxmi Pandey is the young woman's real name.
According to the archaic India Penal Code system the name of Rape Victims is not released, so as to "protect" them from social stigma.
This is similar to how we go about these things in our system with laws like Megan's Law.

Wherever you are. Whoever you are.
Join us on January 26, Republic Day in India, for a virtual vigil for Jyoti Singh Pandey, the most recent victim of Indian culture's violence against women.

We ask you to simply wear a BLACK BINDI to help raise consciousness.
YOUR BLACK BINDI may be a black paper cut out stuck on with non toxic glue.
Or use duct tape, marked masking tape, or a fancy bindi available from an Indian market.

The black bindi is an agreed upon symbol of this black mark against Indian society.
This black bindi is a symbol of how the system fails its women.
The red bindi is a symbol of a married woman in India.

Help us in taking this step towards bringing attention to this subject, and to ask the Indian government to take vigorous steps to change the culture of violence.

In addition, please do something concrete, like donating to a rape crisis center.

Namaste.

To ask the Indian government to change the culture of violence.
Please invite anyone you wish.
For all out of towners - please share with your NYC friends if you can. Thank you.

**

The two-finger test has been used for decades in India as a way to see whether the victim is "habituated to sex". If a woman is sexually active than she has no right to claim rape, because rape is only committed against virgins.
You see the misogyny running rampant.
This would be a great first step in fighting against
a cultural mindset that seeks to blame the victim rather than the perpetrator!
