The space will be open to the public as a warming hut throughout these three weeks.

The Dollhouse of Commons will become home to One Trunk Theatre's theatrical experiments and touring. Built on a bike trailer, this space (with one side that opens completely) allows for a new performer/audience relationship.

SLOW CRAFT

Gallery 1C03, University of Winnipeg, 515 Portage Ave
May 31 - Jun 30
Opening reception May 31, 7 pm

Wasagaming Community Arts, 110 Wasagaming Drive, Wasagaming, MB
July 27 – Sept. 2
Opening reception August 3, 7 pm

SLOW CRAFT takes as its starting point the issues emerging from the broader Slow Movement that developed as a response to our fast-paced Western lifestyles and our consumer culture.
Slowness is often associated with craft.
Craft skills take time to learn; craft processes cannot be rushed.
Makers are developing critical positions in response to our consumer behavior, questioning modes of production through new processes, looking at issues of stewardship and sustainability as well as collective making and the reworking of everyday objects.

SLOW CRAFT will represent approximately 15 Manitoban craft artists whose work reflects fresh approaches to diverse cultural and material traditions.

Juried by Sandra Alfoldy, Jennifer Gibson and Alan Lacovetsky.

Nancy Edell: Sum of its Parts

Winnipeg Art Gallery, 300 Memorial Blvd.
April 19, 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm
Free Screening:
Nancy Edell and Her Legacy
Nancy Edell’s animations from the 1970s
Universal Movement Machine, another film by Kirby Hammond,
about Whitehorse textile artist Meshell Melvin will also be screened.

Nancy Edell (1942 – 2005) is best known for the representational works she created using rug hooking.
Her practice also included woodcuts, monotypes, drawings and animated films.

Throughout her career - that began in Nebraska, ended in Halifax, and included many years in Winnipeg - Nancy was rigorous in her craft and passionate about her feminist content. She envisioned herself an “art nun”, and created spectacular representations of art nuns in action!
Her last solo exhibition was featured at the Winnipeg Art Gallery in 2005.
This film is an intimate portrait of the artist and her works. It also contains interviews with Nancy’s heirs, and discusses problems of artist estates.

Inter-media artist Leah Decter will reflect on developments in her practice, with a particular view to exploring intersections of craft and other media as conceptual elements in her work. The intertwining of social justice issues, socially engaged practices, craft processes and digital media gives Decter’s work a truly unique voice.

Leah Decter's work is rooted in the spaces where material conditions and lived experience intersect with social and political issues.

Decter holds an MFA in New Media from Berlin-based Transart Institute. She has exhibited widely in Canada and internationally in the US, UK, Australia and Europe.
Video screenings of her work include the Images Festival in Toronto, the International Film Festival Rotterdam, the Not Festival in Brooklyn NY and Malta Contemporary Art in Marsa, Malta.

International Women's Day Crafts-travaganza

Free!
Everyone welcome!
A light lunch will be served!
Most materials will be provided.
All you need to bring is plastic grocery bags!
Enjoy good food, company and fun, making art with friends.

Geraf Embroidery with Zarghoona Ahmedzai Zarghoona will teach a traditional Afghani technique that is often used to embellish traditional clothing. The embroidery forms a solid pattern of geometric colour, created by counting threads and applying small, even stitches.  Zarghoona is originally from Kabul, Afghanistan. She will show examples of other regional Afghani embroidery techniques.

Plastic Bag Crochet with Erna Andersen Erna crafts beautiful bags and bowls out of old plastic shopping bags. The stitches are simple and fast to learn. Erna moved to Winnipeg from Denmark. She now works with other newcomers at Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization of Manitoba (IRCOM).

Oromo Beading with Sifo Boramso Sifo creates traditional, east African jewelry using age-old designs. Headbands, earrings and bracelets are created using a simple hand-method (not a loom). This jewelry once adorned all Oromo women. Oronia is now part of Ethiopia.  Sifo is very active at IRCOM, implementing childcare and literacy programs.

This event is supported by the Provincial Minister responsible for the Status of Women and Minister of Labour and Immigration, Jennifer Howard; the Manitoba Craft Council; the Institute for Women’s and Gender Studies at the U of W; Manitoba Crafts Museum and Library; The Edge Gallery; and Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization of Manitoba (IRCOM).

Barb Hunt: Visiting Artist Talk

On Saturday, February 26 from 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm, at MAWA, 611 Main St, Barb Hunt will present images of contemporary Canadian textile art, as well as examples from her own practice.

Free!

Barb's current work examines the devastation of war: she knits antipersonnel land mines and creates installations using camouflage from worn army uniforms.

In describing these and past bodies of work, she says, By giving value to the humble, the discarded and the hand-made, I hope to recover lost histories and encourage the re-consideration of traditional rituals within a contemporary context.

Barb Hunt currently lives and teaches in Newfoundland. She has exhibited her work across Canada and internationally.
