Book Launches

McNally Robinson Booksellers Atrium, 1120 Grant Avenue, Wpg, MB R3M 2A6

Jan 16, 7 - 8 pm   https://www.mcnallyrobinson.com/.../scott.../man-on-a-wheel
Join Scott Nolan for an evening of music and fun to celebrate the launch of ‘Man on a Wheel’. Scott will be accompanied by Cory Wolchuk on the piano.
Available as a YouTube stream: https://youtube.com/live/6x-AS6YbRk8

Scott Nolan pays homage to the poet Patrick O'Connell, who influenced him early in his musical career. By splicing O'Connell's lines together in new ways, Nolan takes the words to new places. Nolan is a songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and poet from Winnipeg. His debut poetry collection, ‘Moon Was a Feather’, was a finalist for the Eileen McTavish Sykes Award for Best First Book.

The CD includes eight original songs and a bonus track of Patrick O'Connell reading "Boz and Molly (A Romance)." The accompanying book of lyrics is illustrated with Nolan's visual art.

Award-winning Winnipeg poet Catherine Hunter's introduction explores the connections forged between these two artists and provides insight into their work.

Jan 18, 7 - 8 pm

Join co-editors Bill Richardson and Neil Besner, host Catherine Hunter, and Winnipeg actor Mariam Bernstein for the Winnipeg launch of ‘Montreal Standard Time: The Early Journalism of Mavis Gallant’.  https://www.mcnallyrobinson.com/.../montreal-standard-time

Selected as one of the Globe and Mail’s top 100 books of 2024, the book features 38 of the roughly 150 pieces of journalism Gallant wrote as a young reporter for The Montreal Standard between 1944 and 1950, before leaving for Europe and establishing herself as one of the twentieth century’s finest writers of short fiction. Gallant’s early journalism with the Standard has never been in print since 1950; it’s now becoming increasingly clear how her early apprenticeship at the Standard anticipated her long and celebrated career as a writer of short stories.

With an Afterword by Marta Dvor᷇ák, this new collection opens a new window onto Gallant’s fictional practice and perspective. Mariam Bernstein will read one of the selections; Neil Besner and Bill Richardson will follow the reading with a conversation moderated by Catherine Hunter about Gallant, her journalism, and her wide influence on English-language writing.

Explore the magic of architecture through play! Visit ‘Building Toys’, the new Winnipeg Architecture exhibit at the Millennium Library.
Discover how toys shape design and imagination – there is something to spark joy for all ages! www.winnipegarchitecture.ca/events

Curated by James Wagner and Daniel Guenther
Building toys are not just for fun, although they undoubtedly are. Building toys are also formative for those who play with them. Architecture is the most encompassing of all the visual arts. We live, work, and play in buildings, most of which are designed by architects. Many of our notable architects and designers have been influenced by educational building toys they played with as children, whether they were Lincoln Logs, LEGO, skyscraper kits, Meccano, or wooden blocks. How have these toys influenced your view of architecture and cities?

The Dust Rhinos stand as a spirited testament to the infectious allure of Celtic folk rock. This quintet has been carving its sonic path for an impressive three decades and is proudly unveiling their tenth studio album, “Ring the Bell.”
Blair McEvoy, the driving force behind the band, weaves a musical spell with his powerful vocals and percussive guitar playing and masterful story telling. Dan Cannon, the rhythmic anchor on bass, provides the heartbeat. The steady Darren Wittmann on drums, brings a dynamic flair. Ryan Spraklin, a master of mandolin, injects a rich tapestry of strings into the ensemble, and Ivanka Watkin, a spellbinding fiddler, contribute a melodic enchantment.

 Please Help Our Food Banks

During these times there has been a growing need for help from our food banks, especially by parents of young children.
Please remember your fellow Winnipeggers during these difficult times. The best thing you could donate is money so that the food banks can buy what is truly needed at a fraction of the cost. Call your local Food Banks to learn what the can accept and what they need.

Many local organizations and sporting events have set up bins to collect donations to help others.

Don’t know what to buy?
This list of ideas and comments has been shared on social media:

1. Everyone donates Kraft Mac and Cheese in the box. They rarely use it because it calls for milk and butter. (It can be prepared with the pasta cooking water).
2. Boxed milk which does not require refrigeration is a treasure, as kids need it.
3. Everyone donates pasta sauce and spaghetti noodles.
4. Canned veggies and soup, especially with pop tops, are necessities.
5. Oil is a luxury but needed for Rice a-Roni.
6. Spices or salt and pepper would be a real Christmas gift.
7. Tea bags and coffee make them feel like you care.
8. Sugar and flour are treats.
9. They enjoy fresh produce donated by farmers and grocery stores.
10. Seeds are good in Spring and Summer because gardening can be done by some.
11. They rarely get fresh meat.
12. Tuna and crackers make a good lunch.
13. Everyone loves Stove Top Stuffing and Hamburger Helper.
14. They get lots of peanut butter and jelly but need sandwich bread.
15. Butter or margarine is nice too.
16. Eggs are a real commodity.
17. Cake mix and frosting makes it possible to make a child’s birthday cake.
18. Dishwashing detergent is very expensive and is always appreciated.
19. Feminine hygiene products are necessities.
20. Canned ham and corned beef are great for protein. Both have keys to open.

John D. Atchison Architect: An Illustrated Talk

Join researcher and writer Gail Perry for an illustrated lecture about the prolific and accomplished architect John D. Atchison. Trained in Chicago, Atchison later worked with “the father of the American skyscraper”, William Le Baron Jenney. After working in Chicago for 11 years (including on the 1893 Columbian World Exposition) he moved to Winnipeg 1905.

In under twenty years, John D. Atchison shaped the backdrop of Winnipeg, designing over 160 buildings (some 60 of them still in use) and advocated for its green and monumental spaces. He was a proponent of the City Beautiful Movement, a member of several civic planning committees and an advocate for the mall approach to the Legislative Building.

John D. Atchison designed 177 Lombard. Gail Perry’s exhibit, “177 Lombard Avenue”, will be on display and we encourage folks to arrive early to view the display.

Join us for a screening of “Writing on the Wall,” a documentary about Winnipeg’s Ghost Signs.

Winnipeg has one of the largest and most well preserved collections of hand painted signs in North America. Ghost signs are hand-painted, outdoor ads that have been preserved on sides of buildings. They are also known as fading ads or brick ads and were prevalent from the 1890s through to the 1960s. As outdoor advertising mediums evolved, ghost signs became less popular and were replaced by billboards and vinyl banners.

by McNally Robinson Booksellers in association with McClelland & Stewart. This event will NOT be streamed on our YouTube channel. Signed books will be available at the door.

The two volumes follows Miss Chief as she moves through time, from a complex lived experience of Cree cosmology, to the arrival of European settlers, to the colonial violence and tragedies of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Blending history, fiction, and memoir, this is a deeply Cree and gloriously queer revisioning of our shared history.

Join celebrated Cree artist Kent Monkman and his long-time collaborator Gisèle Gordon as they discuss their new work "The Memoirs of Miss Chief Eagle Testickle: A True and Exact Accounting of the History of Turtle Island", a genre-defying work based on the paintings of one the most important painters working today that will remake readers' understanding of the land called North America. A story of this continent that reframes the narrative to be one of Indigenous resilience, reshaping our shared understanding and lighting the path ahead.

After a reading with Miss Chief Eagle Testickle, Monkman and Gordon join host Niigaan Sinclair for a conversation.

Monkman’s artworks are held in the public collections of institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Hirshhorn Museum, the Denver Art Museum, and the National Gallery of Canada. For decades his paintings have featured a recurring character: his gender-fluid alter ego Miss Chief Eagle Testickle, a time-traveling, shape-shifting, supernatural being who reverses the colonial gaze.

Gisèle Gordon is a settler media artist and writer based in Dish With One Spoon Territory (Toronto, Canada). Her solo work includes the feature-length documentary, "The Tunguska Project" (Best Feature Length Film at the Planet in Focus Film Festival, 2005), and the video installations "Crosscurrent" (2013 Moscow Biennale) and "The Land that Dreams".

The Fort Garry Hotel
https://www.showpass.com/casati-presents-a-night-of-norah-jazz-at-the-fort-garry-hotel/

Casati is best characterized as a folk trio with an open mind. Grace Hrabi, Jesse Popeski, and Quintin Bart are graduates of the University of Manitoba's jazz studies program. Over the past ten years the trio has released two albums, “There Will Be Days” (2017) and “This Is Just To Say” (2019), finding their style in a unique blend of all the music that inspires them: the heartbreak of a country ballad, the vocal harmonies of 1950's and 60's pop, and the instrumental virtuosity of jazz and classical music, creating a sound that is familiar yet original.

Casati will be presenting the music of Norah Jones in concert for Jazz. Jones has been an important inspiration for the trio, with songs that combine personal, vulnerable lyrics with a distinct combination of jazz and folk music. With special guest pianist Alanna Fast, Casati will perform a selection of familiar favourites and deep cuts from Norah Jones’ two decades-long career. http://www.casatiband.com

It’s springtime in rural Manitoba. The snow has finally left the exotic animal farm where an ostrich finds and swallows a shiny object. Cue veterinarian and amateur sleuth Dr. Peter Bannerman, who surgically removes the object, which looks like an ancient Viking artifact. Soon after, people are horrified by a series of animal mutilations. This sets Peter, and his talented sniffer dog, Pippin, on the hunt for answers.

See the Trafficking Signs

You could save a child. It could be your own.
Sex trafficking is a growing crisis in cities and towns across the country, and a new national awareness campaign, headed up by Joy Smith, aims to prevent youth from being lured into it.
Smith, a former Manitoba MLA and federal Conservative MP, says it is designed to educate people on common signs someone may be at risk of being groomed and lured into sex trafficking.

The Joy Smith Foundation's See the Trafficking Signs campaign is the first national all-Canadian anti-human trafficking awareness campaign.

Smith urged parents, teachers, community leaders to be aware of key warning signs that a youth might be involved in sex trafficking:
⁃    New clothing, jewelry or gifts without having money.
    ⁃    Frequent sleepovers at a friend's house.
⁃    Sudden interest in a man several years older.
⁃    Sudden change in style of dress or makeup.
⁃    New circle of friends and isolation from their old group.
⁃    Change in attitude toward school, regular activities, friends.
    ⁃    Falling grades.
    ⁃    Unexplained cuts or bruises.
    ⁃    Using two cell phones.

Every day, police officers across the country encounter survivors of human trafficking. The children being trafficked and targeted come from all backgrounds and from every part of society. The key to stopping the exploitation is through education and awareness and speaking up, said RCMP Sgt. Tara Clelland, who works with survivors of sex trafficking and exploitation.

The average age of entry into the sex trade is around 11 and 12, said Smith, who as an MP presented private members bills that led to new laws targeting those responsible for human trafficking offences.

The foundation is also offering to provide free presentations at schools and other places that need this critical information.

This February the Winnipeg Humane Society and our Animal Welfare team are bringing awareness to welfare concerns commonly associated with dairy production, and encouraging our community to learn more about the complex and sentient lives of dairy cows. One of the easiest ways you can make a difference is by reducing your dairy consumption.

We know that it is not easy to completely cut dairy from your diet. Our challenge for you this month is to try some of the dairy-free alternatives now readily available.
Try almond or oat milk in your morning coffee or cereal
Swap plant-based cheese on your pizza at restaurants
Look for plant-based yogurts, ice creams, and desserts at your local grocer

We’re asking you to ‘Try Dairy Free for Me’. You might think that your efforts will not make a difference, but small swaps and substitutes can lead to big changes.   https://winnipeghumanesociety.ca/animal-issues/farm-animal-welfare/canadas-dairy-industry/

Black Manitobans Chamber of Commerce - 2023 Black History Month
The Honorable Dr. Jean Augustine made history as the first Black Woman elected to Canada’s Parliament and served from 1993-2006. Her legislative successes include the historic Black History Month Motion, and the Famous Five Motion, which authorized the first statues on Parliament Hill depicting women other than Queen Elizabeth.
Dr. Jean will tell us why it was so important for Canada to legislate Black History Month.
The evening will start with the screening premier of Steadfast - The Messenger and the Message, a documentary of the life of Honorable Dr. Augustine, from her beginnings in Grenada to her many achievements in Canada.
