Poverty and Prosperity: A Walk Down Early 1900s Broadway
What was life like for people in Winnipeg 100 years ago? This city was quite different back then and had some major waves in growth. From being the "Gateway to the West" and "Chicago of the North" to the present day, Winnipeg's foundations have been shaped by classism, inequality, and histories both forgotten and overlooked.

This walking tour of downtown explores Winnipeg's roots and foundations, from periods of major growth to the present day. Join us to hear stories of the city and learn how Winnipeg became the city it is today.
Tours will proceed, rain or shine, but may be cancelled at the discretion of the guide in the event of unsafe conditions such as extreme heat or lightning.
The Tour is made possible thanks to support from Manitoba Sport, Culture, Heritage, and Tourism

This tour departs from the Alloway Arch at the Forks and ends at Dalnavert Museum. You may wish to arrive early to ensure you have time to find parking and use the washroom before the tour departs. This is an outdoor walking tour. Please dress for the weather. You may wish to bring a water bottle.

Some stops may have seating available. The tour can be modified to avoid stairs, but uneven terrain and sidewalks in poor condition may be challenging. Please contact us if you have questions related to the mobility requirements of this tour.

Architect John D. Atchison: Hidden Treasures Walking Tour
Join researcher and writer Gail Perry for a new walking tour of buildings designed by the prolific and accomplished architect John D. Atchison. Born in Illinois and trained in Chicago, Atchison later worked with “the father of the American skyscraper”, William Le Baron Jenney. After working in Chicago for 11 years (including on the 1893 Columbian World Exposition) he moved to Winnipeg in 1905.

In under twenty years John D. Atchison shaped the backdrop of Winnipeg, designing over 160 buildings (60 of them still in use) and advocated for its green and monumental spaces. He was a proponent of the City Beautiful Movement, a member of several civic planning committees and an advocate for the mall approach to the Legislative Building.

The Life and Work of David Wynyard Bellhouse
Trained as an architect in Bruges, Belgium and London, England, David Wynyard Bellhouse (1861 – 1952) immigrated to Manitoba in 1883 where he initially farmed near Cypress River. He moved to Winnipeg in about 1896 where he was able to set up his practice as an architect.

I will describe his building background in England and his own work in the building industry in Manitoba, illustrated with several examples that are mostly standing today. In Winnipeg, Bellhouse designed factories and warehouses in and near the Exchange District, apartment buildings, churches, and houses, mainly for Winnipeg’s wealthy living in Armstrong’s Point and Crescentwood.

Speaker: Born in Winnipeg, but finding employment in London, Ontario, David R. Bellhouse is a retired academic. He is the author of three academic books on the history of probability and statistics and of five self-published books on the history of his family. Among other awards, he has been made an honoured alumnus of the Faculty of Science of the University of Manitoba

Jan 16, 7 - 8 pm   https://www.mcnallyrobinson.com/.../scott.../man-on-a-wheel
Join Scott Nolan for an evening of music and fun to celebrate the launch of ‘Man on a Wheel’. Scott will be accompanied by Cory Wolchuk on the piano.
Available as a YouTube stream: https://youtube.com/live/6x-AS6YbRk8

Scott Nolan pays homage to the poet Patrick O'Connell, who influenced him early in his musical career. By splicing O'Connell's lines together in new ways, Nolan takes the words to new places. Nolan is a songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and poet from Winnipeg. His debut poetry collection, ‘Moon Was a Feather’, was a finalist for the Eileen McTavish Sykes Award for Best First Book.

The CD includes eight original songs and a bonus track of Patrick O'Connell reading "Boz and Molly (A Romance)." The accompanying book of lyrics is illustrated with Nolan's visual art.

Award-winning Winnipeg poet Catherine Hunter's introduction explores the connections forged between these two artists and provides insight into their work.

Join co-editors Bill Richardson and Neil Besner, host Catherine Hunter, and Winnipeg actor Mariam Bernstein for the Winnipeg launch of ‘Montreal Standard Time: The Early Journalism of Mavis Gallant’.  https://www.mcnallyrobinson.com/.../montreal-standard-time

Selected as one of the Globe and Mail’s top 100 books of 2024, the book features 38 of the roughly 150 pieces of journalism Gallant wrote as a young reporter for The Montreal Standard between 1944 and 1950, before leaving for Europe and establishing herself as one of the twentieth century’s finest writers of short fiction. Gallant’s early journalism with the Standard has never been in print since 1950; it’s now becoming increasingly clear how her early apprenticeship at the Standard anticipated her long and celebrated career as a writer of short stories.

With an Afterword by Marta Dvor᷇ák, this new collection opens a new window onto Gallant’s fictional practice and perspective. Mariam Bernstein will read one of the selections; Neil Besner and Bill Richardson will follow the reading with a conversation moderated by Catherine Hunter about Gallant, her journalism, and her wide influence on English-language writing.

Building toys are not just for fun, although they undoubtedly are. Building toys are also formative for those who play with them. Architecture is the most encompassing of all the visual arts. We live, work, and play in buildings, most of which are designed by architects. Many of our notable architects and designers have been influenced by educational building toys they played with as children, whether they were Lincoln Logs, LEGO, skyscraper kits, Meccano, or wooden blocks. How have these toys influenced your view of architecture and cities?

Discovering that a teacher is responsible, she storms into the school demanding to know what’s going on. Meule is made of modular synths, a guitar, two drums by three musicians crossed at the bend of other Touraine bands (Thé Vanille, C4DILL4C, Lehmanns Brothers). Their music is carried by repetitive and saturated grooves a la CAN, sequencers and electronic atmospheres reminiscent of Tangerine Dream and the German kraut softs bands of the 70s.

Rayannah is a Franco-Manitoban artist, producer, beat-maker and artistic director based in Winnipeg. She unveiled her first full length studio album Nos repaires (Our Haunts) in March of 2019. She went on to be named “Francophone Artist of the Year” and “Producer of the Year” at the Western Canadian Music Awards in 2019. She has toured across Canada, Europe and Latin-America and opened for international acts including Esperanza Spalding and Cœur de Pirate.
As a producer, Rayannah has worked on a variety of projects including studio albums and sound design for theatre and film. In 2021 she stepped into the role of artistic director with her immersive multi-disciplinary project Afterglow which saw artists from different disciplines collaborate on an innovative virtual performance. She went on to found and spearhead HYPERART - a Winnipeg-based multidisciplinary festival featuring collaborative performances and installations.

Cribbage returns to the Heather Curling Club!
My name is Lyndon, I've lived in Winnipeg for the past 20 years. I've been playing cribbage off and on probably since I was 10. I joined a cribbage group in early 2019, really enjoyed play with the group. It was on Wilton. However, my work schedule changed since that year and late 2021 and early 2022, my dream was to host my own cribbage nights.
So, I started buying cribbage boards and cards and now have a great stock for large groups. We are still a small group, but I could host up to 80 players.
Winnipeg Free Press had a story on the cribbage nights in the November 10th paper. The online version is updated with photos of myself.

We play in an area of the club’s fully licensed restaurant. They have some good selections on their menu. Feel free to come before and have a bite to eat. You can bring your own water.

We play in partners, where winners move to the next table and switch with one that didn’t win. You don’t need to bring a partner either, come solo and you'll join a table. This is just a fun night to meet people.

Winnipeg Art Gallery to May 21
https://www.wag.ca/event/headlines/
For 150 years the Winnipeg Free Press has remained a staunchly independent news source and now, in celebration of this historic anniversary, Headlines: The Art of the News Cycle, explores the news and how we consume it.
I started with the idea of news itself, news media in the 21st century, right now – and what are artists thinking about in relation to this? I looked to artists first, says Symko.
The exhibition draws on these critical ideas, which include artworks made from the news and newsprint, as well as works that explore headlines and obituaries and, of course, fake news.
Headlines will contextualize the art on display with exhibition design that mimics a newsroom.
