Art Exhibits

Winnipeg Art Gallery to May 21
https://www.wag.ca/event/headlines/
For 150 years the Winnipeg Free Press has remained a staunchly independent news source and now, in celebration of this historic anniversary, Headlines: The Art of the News Cycle, explores the news and how we consume it.
I started with the idea of news itself, news media in the 21st century, right now – and what are artists thinking about in relation to this? I looked to artists first, says Symko.
The exhibition draws on these critical ideas, which include artworks made from the news and newsprint, as well as works that explore headlines and obituaries and, of course, fake news.
Headlines will contextualize the art on display with exhibition design that mimics a newsroom.

Manitoba Underdogs Rescue is struggling to pay mounting veterinary bills after taking in 13 stray dogs from remote northern communities. The organization that rescues hungry and freezing dogs is facing vet bills topping $8,000.

It’s heartbreaking. We bring these dogs in from the cold and you cross your fingers that they’re going to be okay. Sometimes all they need is a bit of TLC, but sadly sometimes they’re very, very sick. But you can’t say no. You just can’t. Without us they would freeze or starve, and we just can’t leave them to die alone. Thank you to everyone for your support! - MUR Executive Director Jessica Hansen

Rosalie Favell: Facing the Camera
Peter Morin: Circle
Friday July 29 – Saturday October 1, 2011

Facing the Camera (2008-present) is a collection of portraits of Indigenous artists and curators. Inspired by the realization that there was no collective document of this group, Rosalie Favell turns the lens towards her colleagues who make up contemporary Aboriginal art communities.
This series extends to international Indigenous artists and curators from the United States, Australia and New Zealand.

Rosalie Favell is a photo-based artist born and raised in Winnipeg. Drawing inspiration from her family history and Métis (Cree/English) heritage, she uses a variety of sources, ranging from pop culture to family albums, to present a complex self-portrait of her experiences as a contemporary Aboriginal woman. Her work has appeared in numerous solo and group exhibitions in national and international venues.

The Art is Ceremony, in cities, in towns, in villages, in hearts. The Art is a method to engage with our breath.

Peter Morin, of the Tahltan Nation of northern British Columbia, is a Victoria-based visual and performance artist. His ideas about museums and their transformation through indigenous ways of knowing began in his cousin's cabin, where visits with friends, relatives, and elders offered him a gradual understanding of Tahltan history and how it can be carried over the land and into urban spaces.

Urban Shaman: Frontrunners

Urban Shaman: Contemporary Aboriginal Art, 203-290 McDermot Avenue, is launching
Frontrunners
Saturday, May 7, 7:00 pm to 11:00 pm

Artists: Alex Janvier, Daphne Odjig, Joseph Sanchez, Norval Morrisseau, Jackson Beardy, Carl Ray, Eddy Cobiness, Louis Ogemah, Jackie Traverse, Lita Fontaine, Darryl Nepinak.

Curated by Cathy Mattes, the exhibit will run to July 17.

Committed to expressing their cultural selves and making space for contemporary Aboriginal art, seven Aboriginal painters congregated in Winnipeg in the early 1970s at the first Aboriginal owned art gallery, run by Daphne Odjig, to form the Professional Native Indian Artists’ Inc. (P.N.I.A.), aka the Indian Group of 7.

The seven artists who belonged to the collective were Daphne Odjig, Jackson Beardy, Norval Morrisseau (Copper Thunderbird), Carl Ray, Joseph Sanchez, Eddy Cobiness, and Alex Janvier.

Characterized by bright colours, abstracted landscapes and stylized images of animals, humans, spirits, and the earth, their diverse contemporary work visually interprets oral stories and legends, addresses post-contact history from an Aboriginal perspective, contemplates spirituality, and maps the land in abstract, painted form and drawing.

Frontrunners exposes the impact of the P.N.I.A. within Manitoba.

In partnership with Plug-In ICA, Frontrunners acknowledges and references the complicated history, impact, and positions created from Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal perceptions of Aboriginal art that surfaced in the early 70s and the ground-breaking actions of the P.N.I.A. Inc.

Main Gallery: PROVISIONAL
Dylan Miner
March 25 – April 23
Reception: Friday, March 25, from 8:00 to 11:00 pm

With a nod to Louis Riel and the Métis provisional government that he helped establish in 1869-1870, artist Dylan Miner uses ‘provisional’ as the starting point from which to interrogate the transitory nature of politics, knowledge, borders, people, identity, history, sports, masculinity, and gender.

Borrowing from a multiplicity of sources, Miner’s artwork considers momentary lapses that could potentially change at any minute.  “Provisional” looks backward to move forward in a pre-figurative and unending movement into the future.  -- Curator, Jenny Western
