DIASPORA has screened across Canada and internationally, including in war torn Ukraine.

The Dust Rhinos stand as a spirited testament to the infectious allure of Celtic folk rock. This quintet has been carving its sonic path for an impressive three decades and is proudly unveiling their tenth studio album, “Ring the Bell.”
Blair McEvoy, the driving force behind the band, weaves a musical spell with his powerful vocals and percussive guitar playing and masterful story telling. Dan Cannon, the rhythmic anchor on bass, provides the heartbeat. The steady Darren Wittmann on drums, brings a dynamic flair. Ryan Spraklin, a master of mandolin, injects a rich tapestry of strings into the ensemble, and Ivanka Watkin, a spellbinding fiddler, contribute a melodic enchantment.

The Winnipeg Premiere of Gruber's Frankenstein!!, a pan-demonium for chansonnier and 13-person orchestra, with children's rhymes by HC Artmann.

Frankenstein!! has proved very popular in the 20 years since Gruber wrote it. The music touches all those areas of culture to which the texts refer. So pop music and hints of folk-song, Kurt Weill and Hanns Eisler are all thrown into the mix to fuse with Stravinskian neo-classicism and the long tradition of Viennese cabaret. The humour is black but quizzically genial, and Gruber's own performance is gleefully exuberant.
Todd Martin is the leader of the Dirty Catfish Brass Band, and performs regularly with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra and Ron Paley Big Band.

Lanikai mix the serene and the stormy, pulling together lush, sparkling alt-pop vibes and swaggering ‘60s soul groove to create a timeless, distinctive sound. Instead of breaking under current trends, they bend with them. Their first, self-titled offering distills this approach to its finest form: gorgeous, poignant pop music.

Lanikai's personnel features producer Thomas D'Arcy (The Carnations, Small Sins) who also sings on “Stay a Little Longer”. Gregory Macdonald (Sloan) on keys. Shamus Currie (The Sheepdogs) on trombone, and a score of other players including Liam O'Neil (saxophone), Tim Iskierski (drums), Drew Jurecka (strings), and Tom Moffett (trumpet). Lanikai is the crystal clear sound of Marti Sarbit's purest voice.

Free Admission /  Beer and unlimited popcorn for $5.

In Jacques Tati’s Traffic, the bumbling Monsieur Hulot, kitted out as always with tan raincoat, beaten brown hat, and umbrella, takes to Paris’s highways and byways. In this, his final outing, Hulot is employed as an auto company’s director of design, and accompanies his new product (a “camping car” outfitted with absurd gadgetry) to an auto show in Amsterdam. Naturally, the road there is paved with modern-age mishaps. This late-career delight is a masterful demonstration of the comic genius’s expert timing and sidesplitting knack for visual gags, and a bemused last look at technology run amok.
The film is screened by the Winnipeg Architecture Foundation, in partnership with Forth.

Deadline: August 1 at 12 PM - 4 PM
see www.aceart.org/submissions for details about how to apply.

Exhibition Program - Call for submissions 2017
aceartinc. exhibits 5 major exhibitions a year by contemporary visual artists and we welcome submissions from all emerging contemporary artists and curators in any media.

The gallery also runs several ongoing projects and hosts numerous one-offs; we are the proud home of Flux Gallery and the Cartae Open School. This Artist Run Centre is passionate about the work being produced by contemporary artists and arts writers and critics in Canada and abroad. Many Canadian artists have shown work at ace early in their careers. We are an established (but not establishment) part of the unique ecosystem of Canadian contemporary art.

Selections for the Regular Program are made by a jury consisting of Winnipeg-based artists/curators/critics, ace staff and board. The ace jury reviews submissions within the context of aceartinc.’s mandate and goals and our available resources. aceartinc. will pay CARFAC exhibition fees to artists; travel and accommodation, one-way shipping and per-diems will also be provided. A writer is commissioned to write a response to the Regular Exhibitions via the Critical Distance writing program, which is published online and anthologised in PaperWait. We professionally document each show.

aceartinc. is dedicated to diversity in its programming and to this end encourages applications from all contemporary artists and curators, groups and collectives in all visual arts media. But we only have the chance to exhibit you if you apply. Please apply.
