THANK YOU!  THANK YOU!  THANK YOU

I’m delighted to see that 500,000 people have found Winnipeg is Better Than Chocolate since I first began writing this blog on September 17, 2009!

I want to thank you for visiting, whether it's been on a weekly or occasional basis!
Also, a huge THANK YOU to those who've asked their friends to visit!
The top ten countries and their visitors are:
United States……….. 157,390
Canada……………………. 96,540
Germany……..…………. 63,243
Russia…………..………… 44,324
Ukraine.…………..…….. 19,893
France……………….……. 15,918
Unknown Region.....… 7,721
Philippines…………….….  5,698
United Kingdom…...…. 5,301
China………………….…….. 3,276

I do notice which posts get the most visits.
Please take a moment and comment when an event or personality interests you.
Local artists do check when they’re in the media and they love the feedback.

This has been a strange time since March 2020.
Due to Covid-19 many of the events have been cancelled or postponed.
But slowly we’re getting back to normal.
Please do everything you can to stay safe and well!

Once again, thank you so much for visiting!
As I said when Sophie and I signed off our weekly show...
Have a great weekend. How can you miss - you're in Winnipeg!

June 3, 7 PM – 8 PM
Virtual Writing Rants and Ramblings, via ZOOM
Free Event by Manitoba Writers Guild on the first Thursday of each month.
You don’t need to be a member to take part.

Meet with other writers and talk about the art of writing - the good, the bad and the ugly - whatever you’d like to discuss. It’s a chance to leave your solitary world in front of the computer (notebook & pencil or typewriter, if you are ‘old school’) and ‘meet’ in the online world with others just like you.
Using Zoom allows writers from all over the province to take part, provided you have a stable internet connection.

Please contact the Writers’ Guild office (email manitobawritersguild3@gmail.com), so we can send you the meeting invitation with the proper links and instructions.
Bring your own beverages and snacks.

Virtual Book Launches
Free Online Event by McNally Robinson Booksellers

June 1, 7 PM – 8 PM
Registration: https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_B0XqYcJ6Rv2gXNymPEVmAQ?fbclid=IwAR3uY6hVQ0yTWjuKe4f4kuL1ZLvPQA0xwQ1f_MqMQm9sG2TzYPgEUHRFyEo

Please join Keith Cadieux as he celebrates the virtual launch of Signal Decay, featuring a conversation hosted by Seyward Goodhand.

Tim has recently passed away and left Lori with piles of expensive recording equipment and mountains of debt. Tim’s family wants to move on from the loss but Lori can’t let go, not while she can still hear Tim’s laugh as though he’s still there beside her. That is, until she begins to hear his laugh in odd places, like old recordings Tim never worked on.
Can love transcend to keep us connected through death? Or do we just create our own reality when we’re not ready to let go?

Keith Cadieux is a Winnipeg-based writer and editor. His debut, the novella Gaze was shortlisted for a Manitoba Book Award and a ReLit award. He co-edited the horror anthology The Shadow Over Portage and Main, which was also shortlisted for a Manitoba Book Award, as well as the ‘Fantasmagoriana Series’ published by the Winnipeg International Writers Festival. Two short stories of his (“Stuck” and “Donner Parties”) have appeared on the Honourable Mentions list of ‘The Best Horror of the Year’ series.

Please join Joanne Epp in conversation with Angeline Schellenberg as we celebrate the launch of Joanne’s new collection Cattail Skyline.

Joanne ventures from open prairie roads into little creek beds, down onto the warm earth of strawberry patches and far afield to the busy markets of Cambodia to examine the intimate ways we come to know and experience place.

Joanne Epp has published poetry in literary journals including The New Quarterly, Prairie Fire, and Canadian Literature. Her first book, Eigenheim, earned her a nomination for the John Hirsch Award for Most Promising Manitoba Writer. This is Joanne’s second book.

The Grey Nuns’ convent, Winnipeg’s oldest building, houses Le Musée de Saint-Boniface Museum, home to the world’s largest collection of Louis Riel artifacts. Built for the Grey Nuns who arrived in the Red River Colony in 1844, the structure is an outstanding example of Red River frame construction. The Museum presents an impressive collection of artifacts that reveal the lives and culture of the Francophone and Métis communities, including a special exhibit about Louis Riel, the “father” of Manitoba.

West Central Women's Resource Centre

640 Ellice Ave, Winnipeg, MB, R3G 0A7

It’s devastating to see the toll this year has had on women in our community:

Women have been laid off from their service-industry jobs and have nowhere to go.

Women in our city are walking around without shoes.

Women don’t have supplies to keep themselves clean and safe.

Women are struggling to access food for themselves and their children.

The need is overwhelming.

We staff the WCWRC Street Outreach Van – the only 7-day-a-week outreach services focused on women in Winnipeg. Every day we meet homeless women who are looking for safety and support, and just a little bit of connection and normalcy. By seeing many of the same women everyday, we can also check in on their well being and connect them with additional services, such as housing supports and counseling.

Will you please help keep the van on the road?

With your gift, you will ensure women have the support and dignity they deserve. Thank you!

The Assiniboine Valley Railway, Inc., 3001 Roblin Blvd.

The 1/8th scale railway just west of Assiniboine Park, is sad to report that the family of the AVR founder, the late Bill Taylor, has given notice that the AVR has 5 months to vacate the property.

We will likely have to put everything into storage temporarily. We will need a new home, or else will have to dissolve the AVR and sell off our assets.

All public access to the property must cease, so there will be no AVR Season this year.
If we are to continue, we will need at least several acres to rebuild on, with hydro & water, close enough to the city that we and the public have easy access. We cannot see rebuilding without public monetary support.

All of us at the AVR miss Bill since his passing in 2013, and have been honored to continue his dream hobby that has given pleasure to so many people. We want to thank the thousands of people who have supported us and enjoyed riding on our Open House trains in the summer, on our Halloween and Christmas Weekend trains, and sharing meals on the Dinner Train Weekends.

Len La Rue, President, AVR (204) 832-3448    hellarue@mymts.net

For more info about what the AVR has been and, hopefully, could be again, check out our website: assiniboinevalleyrailway.org

The Winnipeg Premiere of Gruber's Frankenstein!!, a pan-demonium for chansonnier and 13-person orchestra, with children's rhymes by HC Artmann.

Frankenstein!! has proved very popular in the 20 years since Gruber wrote it. The music touches all those areas of culture to which the texts refer. So pop music and hints of folk-song, Kurt Weill and Hanns Eisler are all thrown into the mix to fuse with Stravinskian neo-classicism and the long tradition of Viennese cabaret. The humour is black but quizzically genial, and Gruber's own performance is gleefully exuberant.
Todd Martin is the leader of the Dirty Catfish Brass Band, and performs regularly with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra and Ron Paley Big Band.

Lanikai mix the serene and the stormy, pulling together lush, sparkling alt-pop vibes and swaggering ‘60s soul groove to create a timeless, distinctive sound. Instead of breaking under current trends, they bend with them. Their first, self-titled offering distills this approach to its finest form: gorgeous, poignant pop music.

Lanikai's personnel features producer Thomas D'Arcy (The Carnations, Small Sins) who also sings on “Stay a Little Longer”. Gregory Macdonald (Sloan) on keys. Shamus Currie (The Sheepdogs) on trombone, and a score of other players including Liam O'Neil (saxophone), Tim Iskierski (drums), Drew Jurecka (strings), and Tom Moffett (trumpet). Lanikai is the crystal clear sound of Marti Sarbit's purest voice.

Bola Oriyomi, a Nigerian storyteller, united the women in our drop-in in December with stories, drumming, singing, food and dance. Seeing all of the women in our centre come together to laugh and move to a shared rhythm helped promote understanding and inclusion. Post-Cinema
Still and Moving Images by Clint Enns
Exhibition: March 8 until April 5, 2013
Opening Reception: March 8 at 7 pm

The work in Post-Cinema comes out of academic research and can be seen as an intersection between academic investigation and artistic experimentation. These works were created in an attempt to gain insight into some of the following questions:

What happens when cinema is reduced to a series of stills?
What is cinema without time?
What lies in the boundary between the photographic and the cinematic?

Clint Enns is a video artist and filmmaker whose work primarily deals with moving images created with broken and/or outdated technologies. His work has shown both nationally and internationally at festivals, alternative spaces and microcinemas.  His writings and interviews have appeared in Millennium Film Journal, Incite! Journal of Experimental Media and Spectacular Optical.

A Prairie Horror - Jillian McDonald
Artist Talk and Video Screening, October 31
Introduced and Moderated by Cliff Eyland

A Prairie Horror will be screened with McDonald’s Incident at the Pool (2011), Field of the Dead and Undead (2011), and RedRum (2010), followed by a discussion and Q & A.

Jillian McDonald avoids extreme gore and violence in favour of stripped down narrative and archetypes.

A Prairie Horror was shot while in residence at the School of Art, University of Manitoba.
A little house on the prairie is overrun with zombies. Featuring a cast of local actors, the narrative is minimal and the focus is the chase, the ambush and the feast.
