Ian Kuali'i - ʻAʻohe hope e hoʻi aku ai
Ian Kualiʻi is a self-taught interdisciplinary artist of Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiian) and Mescalero Apache ancestry working in murals, large-scale hand-cut paper, and site-specific installation. Ian fluidly merges urban contemporary art with his ancestral iconography and history, drawing from occult symbolism, Indigenous politics, and Native Hawaiian cultural practices. From a single sheet of paper using only an x-acto blade as his tool, Ian’s portraits and compositions are carefully rendered in hand-cut paper, blending boldly geometric traditional patterns with delicate lenticular linework.

JUL 14 AT 9 AM – JUL 15 AT 4:15 PM
Centre for Transnational Mennonite Studies, University of Winnipeg

The Russlaender Mennonites: War, Dislocation, and New Beginnings
Between 1923 and 1929 some 21,000 Mennonites from the Soviet Union left a land decimated by violence, famine, and epidemic. They found shelter in far-off Canada, where government, church communities, and private businesses supported their immigration. These migrants, popularly known as the Russlaender Mennonites, made Canada their home. For the past hundred years, they have influenced the shape of Canadian Mennonite communities through their family networks, churches, economic pursuits (as labourers, professionals, and entrepreneurs), and in the worlds of politics, faith, arts, and service.
This centenary conference presents papers that explore the development of the Russlaender, from late imperial Russia, through war, revolution, and upheaval in the early Soviet Union, to their relocation to Canada. It will also feature conversations with noted authors of fiction about the Russlaender experience.
There will be a livestream of this event. Full conference program & free registration: https://ctms.uwinnipeg.ca/events/russlaender-mennonites/

Outlaw cowboy Orville Peck croons about love and loss from the badlands of North America. The resulting sound is entirely his own - taking the listener down dusty rose-colored desert highways; through a world where worn out gamblers, road-dogs, and lovesick hustlers drift in and out of his masked gaze. “Big Sky,” his first single, is a campfire lullaby of Orville’s past lovers.
Orville Peck’s music has been featured in publications like Nylon, i-D, Vice, The Needle Drop, and Office, as well as numerous Apple Music and Spotify playlists.
