Joe Sinness’s still life drawings are visual narratives of desire. Through selecting and arranging objects and subjects that he adores and then re-presenting them in coloured pencil on paper, the drawings become yet another type of fetishized commodity. Sinness’s photorealistic drawing style imbues these staged still lifes with a metaphoric presence that he characterizes as “melancholic tributes to queer performance.”

Steve & Anna-Lisa Kirby

Anna-Lisa Kirby here...
Aqua Books is THE place for jazz in Winnipeg, so come out on out and hang! I can't wait to see you all!

If you love the songs of Ella, Sarah, Carmen, Billie, Nina, Betty and Abbey with a little Kurt Elling & Dianne Reeves sprinkled in for good measure, then this is the night for you!

On June 23, at 10:00 pm, you'll hear this music performed by some incredible musicians.

I am very fortunate to get to perform with some of the greatest musicians on the planet! Of course my husband and my partner in crime: Steve Kirby on bass, Larry Roy on Guitar, Will Bonness on piano, Curtis Nowosad on drums and Jimmy Greene on tenor saxophone.

It's going to be a blast and we will open it up for a jam session afterwards.

Performing right before us at 8:00 pm is the amazingly talented Juno award winning Kelley Lee Evans!
This is going to be an incredible show! Come for her, then stick around for us!

Advance tickets are $18 and are available online or in person at the Jazz Winnipeg office, 007-100 Arthur St., by phone at 989-4656.

Blue King Brown / Orgone

BLUE KING BROWN (AUSTRALIA)
ORGONE (LOS ANGELES)

Wednesday, June 22
10:00 pm
Pyramid Cabaret, 176 Fort St.

Underscoring the fiery vocals and political lyrics of Natalie Paapaa, Blue King Brown has created a distinctly original sound from Afrobeat, reggae, and Latin influences.
The band broke out with its first single, Water, from its debut EP in 2005. It followed with its first full-length CD Stand Up.
Now encompassing from 7 to 10 members, Blue King Brown is known for its high-energy live shows. Its latest CD, Worldwize, Part 1 (North & South) was released last year.

With a rooted sense of funk, soul, and Afrobeat, Los Angeles’ Orgone seamlessly slides through multiple styles at every performance. The original 5-member band released its debut CD in 2002.
Singer Fanny Franklin joined the group after the band was floored seeing her perform with Dakah, the 30-piece hip hop orchestra. Their first recording together, a cover of Funky Nassau, became a DJ fave worldwide.

Gaining worldwide recognition for their raw studio recordings and exciting live sets led to the release of The Killion Floor, an album of hard-hitting Afro-soul and funk. While enjoying comparisons to classic acts like War and Mandrill, or modern funk staples like Sharon Jones or Breakestra, Orgone is a group like no other.

Advance tickets are $18 and are available online or in person at the Jazz Winnipeg office, 007-100 Arthur St., by phone at 989-4656.

For only $75 you can see Blue King Brown and Orgone along with nearly 40 other Club Series shows just by flashing your pass!

The Lost Fingers

The 2011 TD Winnipeg International Jazz Festival presents:
Tuesday, June 21 · 8:00 pm - 10:30 pm
West End Cultural Centre
586 Ellice Ave.

Advance tickets are $25 and are available online at Jazz Winnipeg, by phone at 989-4656, or in person at the Jazz Winnipeg office, 007-100 Arthur St.

In 1928, at the young age of 18, Django Reinhardt lost the use of two fingers in a caravan accident. Reinhardt developed a unique, jazz-inspired style of playing the guitar and became one of the world’s most influential musicians.

In 2006 guitar virtuosos Byron Mikaloff and Christian Roberge met jazz bassist Alex Morisette at the Quebec Conservatory of Music and formed the trio The Lost Fingers.

In 2008 the group created an ingenious tribute to the music they grew up on in the ’80s, mixed with the music of Reinhardt, with the album Lost in the ’80s
The trio’s live shows were in high demand thanks to the combination of great musicianship, their charming sense of humour, and their trademark colourful suits.
The 2009 Montreal International Jazz Festival had no hesitation when selecting the group as the festival’s closing performers. The trio has also been showcased at the Calgary Stampede and the Vancouver Winter Olympic
