Alice Kumplunkem is overweight, has a bad haircut, and a plus-sized chest. She wants to be a movie star. In her quest, and through her determination, things go from bad to worse. 

While working for The Winnipeg Police Department, Kim Cayer caught the acting bug when K-Tel’s “The Bird Dance” commercial featured her prominently. Kim wrote and starred in a play called Memories of Marilyn which toured Western Canada. Last year she published an e-book called Dirty Numbers.

Meet the Composer featuring Neil Weisensel

Vancouver Opera will premiere Neil Weisensel ’s newest opera, Stickboy in October of 2014. Weisensel’s six operas have seen 124 total performances across Canada. Mr. Weisensel also had an exclusive engagement performing solo piano at the Vancouver 2010 Olympics. His music has opened for Oscar winner Al Gore and Justin Trudeau, and his big band collaboration with superstar Michael Bublé earned him a Genie nomination.

Miracle at the Forks: The Museum that Dares Make a Difference 

On July 18, 2000, Israel “Izzy” Asper, the renowned Canadian businessman and philanthropist, first discussed his idea of building a human rights centre in Winnipeg. Miracle recounts the 14-year ordeal of making Izzy Asper’s dream a reality. 

Peter C. Newman and Allan Levine also tell the story of the international competition to find an architect, and of Antoine Predock who dared build an audacious museum.

Burning Daylight

A poetry collection and song cycle drawing together the Yukon Gold Rush and modern Arctic iron ore mining mega-projects. Through a feminist lens, it examines dislocation, isolation, family and frailty, reflected in our relationship with the northern landscape. 

Christine Fellows’ songs are filled with fully-formed characters and wondrous locations, lashed together with the spirit of collaboration and feminist intervention. Burning Daylight is her first poetry collection and her sixth studio album.

Richard Westwood’s current research focuses on a wide variety of projects including conservation and protection of threatened and endangered butterflies and plants in prairie ecosystems. He is an author of The Butterflies of Manitoba and is currently working on a sequel, The Moths of Manitoba

The evolution of this business from “poor-people-food” to a multimillion-dollar industry. The family’s struggles in introducing this new ethnic food are narrated as are their experiences with the social hurdles. 

Badru Deen followed a career path in Banking, Human Resource management, Marketing and Sales, and eventually became an entrepreneur.

Diagnosed with a colorectal tumour as a student and young newly-wed, he thought his subsequent victory would set him up for a straight run at life. A decade later he found out he carried a cancer gene. Fifteen years after his first diagnosis, he faced a recurrence.

Dennis Maione is an author, speaker, and para-publisher living in Winnipeg. Not willing to be held back by age or cancer, he has recently completed two Ironman triathlons.

Bittersweet Sands: 24 Days in Fort McMurray

Rick Ranson has collected stories from the DEW Line and the drill ships of Working North to the raging waters of the Mississippi in Paddling South. Join this engaging raconteur as he ventures to one of Canada’s Fort McMurray, home of the oilsands.

Ranson has worked as a longshoreman, drill ship’s welder, boilermaker, farm equipment salesman, editor for McGraw Hill, and forklift operator. Bittersweet Sands is his third book.

An Evening with David Bergen, launching Leaving Tomorrow: A Novel

In the small town of Tomorrow, young Arthur yearns for a larger life. His father prefers horses and good books, his mother is guided by practicality and her faith, while his brother Bev chooses action over thinking. Solitary Arthur has one ally, his adopted cousin, Isobel.  

David Bergen is an award-winning author of five previous novels and a collection of short stories. A Year of Lesser was a New York Times Notable Book and The Case of Lena S. was a finalist for the Governor General’s Award for Fiction. In 2005, Bergen won the Giller Prize for The Time in Between.
