Ways to Help Fellow Canadians and Manitobans

December 6 - CBC's Make the Season Kind

Join CBC to help Make the Season Kind for Canadians this Winter.
There were over 2 million monthly visitors to food banks in Canada in 2024, the highest number in history. CBC is asking for your help. Every act of kindness, one dollar, one can of food, or one hour of your time, can make a difference to Canadians in need.
This annual/national radiothon is a day devoted to Harvest Manitoba here in our province. Filled with stories, interviews, and Harvest's CEO Vince’s weather/traffic reports, our friends at CBC have already started collecting stories from staff and clients for broadcast.

Rumour has it that several Canadian celebrities are promoting the day across Canada (Catherine O’ Hara, for one).

Winnipeg postal workers are collecting letters to Santa despite the ongoing strike.
But they won’t be collecting or delivering charitable donations.

Many organizations often rely heavily on mail-in cheques from donors. But now the cash flow has come to a halt. Those looking to donate are asked to visit the charity’s website to donate by credit card or e-transfer.

Hunger doesn't take a holiday

Nearly 23 per cent of Canadians living in food-insecure households.
We need your support now. Over 108,000 Manitobans visit a food bank every month. These are the families, children, infants, and seniors that rely on your donation. School programs, soup kitchens, day cares and everyday people are facing daily struggles to put food on the table.

Non-perishable food will be accepted until December 13 at the Charleswood, Fort Garry, Harvey Smith, St. Vital, and St. Boniface libraries.

Don’t know what to bring?
Shelf-stable, nutritious items like peanut butter, tuna and canned beans are at the top of every food bank's wish list. Most organizations also have a list of their most-needed foods, including whether they accept baked goods or fresh fruit.
Money is useful because food banks, thanks to their purchasing power and relationships with retailers and food producers, can stretch those dollars further. They can also buy items needed by their local community. Financial contributions also go toward fuel and operating costs to transport the food.
Food banks welcome one-time or monthly donations.
You can also make the donation in someone else's name. Great stocking stuffers!

Donation don'ts:
Avoid glass containers. If a jar breaks in a family's hamper, it can ruin all of their food.
Please double-check the expiration date and overall quality. Slightly dented cans are fine, but big dents or bulging tins are not.

Explore other grassroots options. Why not grow a row of vegetables or pick and share fruit next summer? Grocery items are always welcome. If you live in Winnipeg, these are a few local food drop off locations:

529 Country Club Bld - 55+ housing, Monday to Friday, 9 am - 4 pm
Phone or text with subject ‘Food Delivery’ to 204-888-5534

22 Strauss Dr - Manitoba Housing, Monday to Friday, 9 am - 4 pm
Email with subject ‘Food Delivery’ to Nicholas.Rush@gov.mb.ca

825 School Rd - The Salvation Army, Monday to Friday, 9 am - 3 pm
Phone 204-889-9203

170 Hendon Ave- Manitoba Housing, Thursdays
Phone or text with subject ‘Food Delivery’ to 204-619-4634

For inquiries about the Food Security network call Kathy Perrault, 204-223-0934.

People who rely on food banks don't go away in January.

There is nothing ‘normal’ about the state of poverty and food insecurity in Canada. Food insecurity is at an all time high, and food bank usage has doubled since 2019. We cannot carry on thinking that people will be fine without significant intervention. This issue requires urgent and immediate action.

It's a really tough time for food banks, and so we need to make these issues prominent. Folks are not always in a position to give, so a great way to give is to lend your voice to the cause. This is a petition calling on the federal government to introduce a "Groceries and Essentials Benefit" as a way of getting money into people's pockets quickly.

Petitioning Stephen Harper
Bring 100 Palestinian Children to Canada for Desperately Needed Medical Attention

Petition by Lauren Lowe, Hamilton, Canada

Many Canadians have been watching in helpless horror the unfolding of events in Gaza and the unfathomable suffering endured by the children who are trying to survive there.
We respectfully urge all Canadian hospitals to add their names to the list of Ontario Hospitals who have already reached out in compassion to offer treatment to Palestinian children who desperately need help.

August 23, 7:00 pm CST
Premiering on CBC Television
Directors/writers Franco-Métis siblings Jérémie and Janelle Wookey
Producer Jocelyn Mitchell
Story editor and executive producer Gemini-Award winning producer Jeff Newman

In April 2011 Manitoba experienced a 1-in-350-year flood. To save urban centres, unprecedented water levels were diverted to Lake St. Martin. First Nation communities in the area were swamped, and 2100 people forced from their homes for what they thought would be just a few weeks. But weeks stretched into years…

The people interviewed are devastated, as they struggle with feelings of isolation, loneliness and dejection:
We’ve lost more than just houses. Our family structures are being broken down, our community structure is broken down. When you take somebody’s home, you bring devastation to their lives. You take their roots. You take their grounding.

They sent a constable here with a piece of paper, telling me I had to go… They cut off water, they cut off septic. We were never given a choice to stay, or a choice to stand and fight. It’s like ‘you gotta go, and you gotta go now.’

People think we get everything for nothing… If only they could see.

An Evening with Jian Ghomeshi
October 13, 7:00 pm
Reading & Signing 1982.
Hosted by Terry MacLeod of CBC Radio One 89.3 FM / 990 AM’s Information Radio
and presented in association with CBC Manitoba.

In 1982 the Commodore 64 computer was introduced, Ronald Reagan survived being shot, the Falkland War started and ended, Michael Jackson released Thriller, Canada repatriated its Constitution, and the first compact disc was sold in Germany. And that’s not all. Over the course of 1982, I blossomed from a naïve 14 year-old trying to fit in with the cool kids to something much more: A naïve, eyeliner-wearing 15 year-old trying to fit in with the cool kids. So writes Jian Ghomeshi in his first book, 1982.

A memoir told across ten intertwined stories of the songs and musical moments that changed his life. 1982 is an entertaining cultural history of a crazy era of glam, glitter, and gender-bending fads and fashions.
It is definitely the first rock memoir by a Persian-Canadian new waver.
Jian Ghomeshi is a broadcaster, writer, musician, and producer. He is the host and
co-creator of the national daily talk program Q on CBC Radio One and CBC TV. The show, which began in 2007, now has the largest audience of any cultural-affairs program in Canada. Ghomeshi was a member of the multi-platinum-selling Canadian folk-rock group Moxy Früvous.
Born in England, raised in Canada, and of Iranian descent, Ghomeshi lives in Toronto.

The CBC We Want - Winnipeg

September 23, 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm
Carol Shields Auditorium, Millennium Library, 251 Donald Street

Writer, broadcaster and speaker Eric Friesen will moderate.
Panelists:
Nicholas Hirst, CEO, Original Pictures Inc. and former editor of the Winnipeg Free Press
Trudy Schroeder, Executive Director, Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra
Kim Todd, President, Original Pictures Inc.
Paul Vogt, Clerk of the Executive Council, Province of Manitoba

The CBC We Want, FRIENDS’ national conversation about our national public broadcaster, comes to Winnipeg.

After another round of service reductions many supporters of CBC are left wondering how to make a difference.

Should the CBC chase audience, introduce ads to Radio Two and go more commercial?
Should it provide high-quality programming that is different from the private sector?
Or, is there another path?

We need to be clear about what we want from our national public broadcaster.

The CBC We Want will be a lively exchange of ideas that you shouldn’t miss.

The novel Unless is about women and complex characters… my song Highway is about women and the complex decisions that women have to make in life.

I'm a newcomer in this contest against some heavy hitters so lets see if the song about women can place a spot with the novel about women.

If you can get five or more to send in a vote for me… I'll send you a copy of my CD titled Gypsy As I Go and a new hot off the press "photo art card series" of one of my newest photos from my "Sticks and Stones and Flowered Friends" exhibit.

Thank you! Merci! Meegwetch for your vote!!!
