The Winnipeg Poetry Slam 2015 kicks off with the first of four bouts to qualify poets to be on the Winnipeg Poetry Slam Team! This group of four stunning poets will then qualify to compete on a national stage at The 2015 Canadian Festival of Spoken Word in Saskatoon!
In each bout, 12 spots are open for anyone. The best scored poets will move up the ranks.

To explore the creative challenges of translating a book or short story to screen, Cinematheque, McNally Robinson, and the Manitoba Writers’ Guild present a series of successful book to film adaptations on Wednesday evenings, once a month. 
Films will include Paul Newman’s Rachel, Rachel, Stephen Frears’ High Fidelity and David Cronenberg’s Crash as well a panel discussion on the subject with writer and Professor George Toles and author David Bergen.

Read the book in advance and then join Winnipeg Free Press columnist Alison Gillmor for a discussion in the Burns Classroom at the Manitoba Writer’s Guild after each screening (space is limited to 30 people).

Katherena Vermette won the 2013 GGLA for North End Love Songs.
Lorna Crozier won the 1992 GGLA for Inventing the Hawk.
Patrick Lane won the 1978 GGLA for Poems, Selected and New.

The evening will feature readings, and a conversation with Festival Director Charlene Diehl.

The St. Matthew Passion is probably the greatest of the four Passions written by Bach and is scored for solo voices, double choir, treble choir and double orchestra. The Winnipeg Boys Choir, under the direction of Carolyn Boyse, will join Canzona for the concert. 

Canzona Choir's inspired collaborations with MusikBarock have brought to life many top quality productions.
The 25th Anniversary year celebrates Monumental Masterpieces and honours Artistic Director Henry Engbrecht, who will conduct both concerts. Engbrecht founded the 16-30 voice ensemble in 1989 inspired by his love of Baroque music.

We're teaming up with Winnipeg's baroque vocal ensemble, Canzona (celebrating 25 years), and guest conductor David Fallis for a holiday treat. Fallis is Canada's leading interpreter of baroque choral repertoire.

Our second is at 5:00 p.m., and features favourite carols, led by our band Heart's Refuge.  This is a great service for your children, particularly the younger ones who have pre-Christmas energy.

Our third is at 11:00 p.m. from the Book of Common Prayer.  This is a service that is both solemn and joyful and features the full choir and organ.    A sample of our choir

Join us in Harvesting Hope. CBC Manitoba is dedicating an all-day effort on CBC Radio OneCBC News Winnipeg and cbc.ca/manitoba to support the province's largest food bank, Winnipeg Harvest.

CBC Radio One is challenging its audiences to donate infant formula in addition to monetary donations for the food bank. 
Each month, Winnipeg Harvest provides emergency baby formula to over 1600 babies under the age of one. There is never enough infant formula to meet the demand.

Manitoba Crafts Museum and Library: Just a Needle and Thread

Work by Manitoba craftspeople and pieces from the museum collection. These works showcase the diversity of Manitoba embroidery and the tapestry of cultures in the province. 
You will be inspired to create your own treasures with Just a Needle and Thread.

Works by Francesca Carella Arfinengo, Dot From, Maria van der Klok-Sieveking, 
Heather Komus, Selina Lawrence, Betty Mayes, Willow Rector, Susanne Sulkers, 
Susanne Sulkers-Leurs, Sandra Toyne, and Beth Wolchock-Brown will be exhibited.

Many embroidery programs and events will be running parallel to the exhibition.
