The Red River Paddle Challenge is a 45 kilometer (28 miles) long distance paddling race on the Red River beginning in Winnipeg and ending down river in Lockport. Performer, composer, activist, musicologist. These roles are all infused into Jeremy Dutcher’s art and way of life. His music, too, transcends boundaries: unapologetically playful in its incorporation of classical influences, full of reverence for the traditional songs of his home, and teeming with the urgency of modern-day struggles of resistance.

A member of Tobique First Nation in New Brunswick, Jeremy worked in the archives at the Canadian Museum of History, transcribing Wolastoq songs from 1907 wax cylinders. Long days at the archives turned into long nights at the piano, feeling out melodies and phrases, in dialogue with the voices of his ancestors. These compositions have been collected together on his debut LP Wolastoqiyik Lintuwakonawa.

African Percussion & Dance with Casimiro Nhussi 

Casimiro is a professional African dancer, choreographer, dance instructor and musician. Born in Mozambique, Africa, he has been a dance professional since 1982. Casimiro became the Principal Dancer, and then the Artistic Director of the Mozambique National Song and Dance Company.  He is the Artistic Director and Founder of NAfro Dance Productions.

Casimiro is leader of the Kalahari drumming group, and the NAfro Band as well being a member of Bafana drumming group, the Million Civilian Band and Afri-Can Band. He was commissioned by the National Film Board of Canada to compose music for the animated short “Mind Me Good Now”. 

Casimiro was nominated twice for the Western Canadian Music awards. Casimiro has performed in 28 countries. In 2011, He performed for the opening of the 2011 African Games, Maputo Mozambique.

Royal Canoe - W A V E R Record Release

We're going to record the whole thing. It'll eventually become a live album. 

On Waver Royal Canoe is steering into new terrain. The band still has their kaleidoscopic, beat-driven heart, but these songs play with the absurdity of modern life. 

They have played over 400 shows and major festivals around the world, as well as having been on tours with Alt-J and Bombay Bicycle Club. They received a nomination for Alternative Album of the Year at the Junos, and Best Independent Album at the Western Canadian Music Awards. They wrote music for and performed a musical version of Shakespeare’s Richard II and performed their sophomore album in its entirety with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra.

If you boil down Shad’s trajectory as a hip-hop artist up to this point, it all comes down to love. He has used his platform as a rapper, a musician, and a writer, to search for and highlight all the love this hard world has to offer. 

Shad’s family settled in London, Ontario after fleeing the Rwandan genocide. He came up like a lot of first generation Canadian kids, with this cultural duality and the sense that this good country had some baggage that he’d have to unpack some day.

He has released five solo albums: 2005’s When This Is Over; 2007’s The Old Prince; 2010’s TSOL; 2013’s Flying Colours; and 2018’s A Short Story About A War. The middle three were nominated for Canada’s Polaris Music Prize and TSOL won the 2011 Rap Recording of the Year at the Juno Awards. He explored late 80's/early 90's chart-topping R&B vibes, on 2016’s Adult Contempt, as Your Boy Tony Braxton. 

In the past five years, Shad has emerged as a vital broadcaster: after departing his hosting gig on CBC Radio’s q, he went on to host the Hip-Hop Evolution docu-series, whose 2016 season was released by HBO Canada and earned both a prestigious Peabody Award and an International Emmy Award.

Refined ink lines in my botanicals are a nod at my original passion for ink illustration. Bold colours and enigmatic choices in my new landscapes and skyscapes have helped me break out of colour palette I was all too comfortable in. These new paintings bring a sense of curiosity and intrigue. My new Magic Rabbit series is an interpretation of dreams and nightmares that plagued me as a child – I try to capture the beautiful terror of these dreams through this collection on canvas board through gouache paint primarily, with accents in various mixed media. -Tamara
