Transcendence is a collection that details my personal catharsis. Art has always been my therapy – a means to overcome difficult life circumstance through the act of painting and sketching. Fantasy has always been a huge source of inspiration, being inspired by childhood movies such as The Neverending Story or The Chronicles of Narnia book series.
Over time I discovered that art can be used as a vehicle for change. Half the proceeds sold in this show will go towards Arcane Horizon – an organization that assists persons with developmental disabilities with community living supports to help them lead their best lives. I have realized that art is not just a means to change my circumstance, but can also be used to benefit the lives of others, which is the essence of this show. ~ Jacobus van Houdt

Mide-wigwas: Transmediating is an exhibit focused on the relationship of birchbark scrolls, as relatives holding both sacred and historical knowledge, to other archival media such as photographs and film. 70 years ago, the artist Angelina McLeod’s great-uncle James Redsky (re)produced a series of Midewiwin birchbark scrolls, including origin, migration, and master scrolls, telling the story of the Anishinaabeg migration from east to west. These scrolls are the only known source that conveys this history through traditional Anishinaabeg methods of knowledge record. Redsky is from McLeod’s community of Shoal Lake 40 (SL40) First Nation, and in 1966 sold his scrolls to the Glenbow Museum in Alberta.

Midewiwin pictograph birch-bark scrolls contain stories, songs, and sacred narratives (Aadizookaanag) handed down to the Anishinaabeg from generation to generation. The purpose of this exhibit is to honor the ancestors and culture by re-telling our stories through intergenerational history across media and through Anishinaabeg ways of knowing.

Angelina McLeod (Anishinaabekwe) is an emerging filmmaker, writer, and documentary subject from Shoal Lake First Nation. Angelina is a land and water defender who is passionate about sharing Anishinaabeg history, culture, languages and stories. Her research is focused on Midewiwin birch bark scrolls that were once held by her grand uncle James Redsky, WWI veteran and prominent member of the Midewiwin. Angelina directed a series of short films with the National Film Board of Canada about her community Shoal Lake 40, First Nation, the source of Winnipeg's drinking water.

We would like to acknowledge we are gathered on the original lands of Anishinaabeg, Cree, Oji-Cree, Dakota and Dene peoples, and the Métis Nation. We acknowledge that our source of water is sourced from Shoal Lake 40 First Nation.

Reconciliation: Treaties, Land & History
What do the land and Treaty acknowledgements we hear before events really mean? How can I do a better job of honouring the original occupants of this place and support their ancestors?

Join us for a virtual event hosted by Eric Flett, UFCW Canada Resident Elder, with a presentation by Maureen Matthews, Curator of Cultural Anthropology at the Manitoba Museum. This presentation will contextualize the place we call home, our relationship to the land, and our Treaty obligations.

Electric Six and guests
The Devil has always been there. He is the great outsider, the original iconoclast. Above all else, The Devil lives to corrupt, to adulterate, to defile.
Electric Six has often used The Devil as subject matter for its songs because of that last bit, the part about corruption and adulteration.
With its fourteenth studio album Bride of the Devil, Electric Six examines the concepts of evil and corruption, humanity’s various falls from grace, the nine circles of purgatory and of course, the internet itself.
Our sound will corrupt and enslave you as the beautiful demonic bride you know you truly are.

Join Jim Blanchard as he celebrates the virtual launch of Thinking Big: A History of the Winnipeg Business Community to the Second World War, featuring a conversation hosted by Christopher Adams.

From the HBC and the Indigenous free traders of the fur trade to the establishment of companies that still exist today, Thinking Big examines the history of Winnipeg’s business development. Through profiles of Manitoba industries and personalities, Blanchard reveals how Winnipeg’s business community dealt with challenges, organized itself to take advantage of periods of growth and prosperity, and shaped the city we know today.

Jim Blanchard holds an M.A. in History from the U of M and a Library Science degree from Western University. He is Librarian Emeritus at the U of M, past president of the Manitoba Historical Society, and the author of several books on Manitoba history, including the award-winning Winnipeg, 1912.

Belugas in Manitoba: The Future of our White Whales
Did you know Western Hudson Bay is home to one of the biggest concentrations of beluga whales in the world?

An estimated 55,000 belugas (one-third of the world’s population) migrate into the Churchill, Seal, and Nelson river estuaries each summer to moult, calve and feed.

But belugas are highly sensitive to climatic changes. As the Arctic sea faces longer ice-free periods, beluga whales are becoming more vulnerable to increased ship traffic, hydroelectric development and predation from orca whales.

Join us for a webinar with Kristin Westdal, Arctic Field Research Director at Oceans North. She will discuss the latest beluga research, including the importance of belugas to the region, the biggest threats to beluga populations, and what is being done to protect these magnificent creatures.

Westdal has worked extensively on research about narwhal, belugas and killer whales in Canada’s eastern Arctic, including collaboration with Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the Qikiqtani Inuit Association. From 2001 to 2005 she owned and operated a kayaking ecotourism operation in Hudson Bay that offered close encounters with beluga whales.

CPAWS Manitoba wants to maintain this positive connection to nature by providing a space for Manitobans to connect online from the safety of our homes and be inspired by nature in our backyards and beyond.

Join CPAWS Manitoba for weekly lunch and learn presentations from experts across the province who will share their knowledge and passion.

The Good Will & UMFM are proud to present Shad w/ guests
If you boil down Shad’s trajectory as a hip-hop artist up to this point, it all comes down to love. He has used his platform as a rapper, a musician, and a writer, to search for and highlight all the love this hard world has to offer.

Shad’s family settled in London, Ontario after fleeing the Rwandan genocide. He came up like a lot of first generation Canadian kids, with this cultural duality and the sense that this good country had some baggage that he’d have to unpack some day.

He has released five solo albums: 2005’s When This Is Over; 2007’s The Old Prince; 2010’s TSOL; 2013’s Flying Colours; and 2018’s A Short Story About A War. The middle three were nominated for Canada’s Polaris Music Prize and TSOL won the 2011 Rap Recording of the Year at the Juno Awards. He explored late 80's/early 90's chart-topping R&B vibes, on 2016’s Adult Contempt, as Your Boy Tony Braxton.

In the past five years, Shad has emerged as a vital broadcaster: after departing his hosting gig on CBC Radio’s q, he went on to host the Hip-Hop Evolution docu-series, whose 2016 season was released by HBO Canada and earned both a prestigious Peabody Award and an International Emmy Award.

“Finally Free” marks Daniel Romano’s eighth long playing album in the last eight years. He has had a prolific output of incredibly entrancing, poignant and creative records in this span of time. His last record, “Modern pressure” received outstandingly high acclaim and praise from every notable publication out there.

Dead Soft is a four piece rock n roll band from Vancouver, BC comprised of members Nathaniel Epp, Keeley Rochon, Kyle Schick, and Alex Smith. After forming in 2011, they have released a string of EPs and singles leading up to their debut self-titled album. Blending hefty portions of heavy, dirge-like punk with an upbeat pop flourish, Dead Soft has been known to evoke an aesthetic of doom and sweetness in equal measure.

February 15, 7 PM – 10 PM - Please join us for the opening reception of
“Arcane”, an Art Exhibition by Tamara Roshka, featuring paintings, photography and illustration available for purchase.

Arcane was intended to be a personal journey of experimentation and abstraction. And yet, I have found that it developed into a journey of experimentation with colours and imagery. Refined ink lines in my botanicals are a nod at my original passion for ink illustration. Bold colours and enigmatic choices in my new landscapes and skyscapes have helped me break out of colour palette I was all too comfortable in. These new paintings bring a sense of curiosity and intrigue. My new Magic Rabbit series is an interpretation of dreams and nightmares that plagued me as a child – I try to capture the beautiful terror of these dreams through this collection on canvas board through gouache paint primarily, with accents in various mixed media. -Tamara

We are essentially organic computers riddled with programs and belief systems. Your subconscious mind is 88-90% of what is running your thoughts and actions, your conscious mind is only 10-12%.

ThetaHealing® is a powerful healing technique that reprograms the unconscious mind and your DNA - identifying and unblocking belief systems that are blocking your path to wellness and replaces them with positive beliefs.

The heart of this class is the practice of techniques that allow you to change life patterns held in place by core, genetic, historic and soul beliefs, either self-inflicted or externally imposed. The student will learn to identify his/her own beliefs as well as to practice pulling them for others in the class. Issues of safety are emphasized, especially when making genetic changes in the body.

Behind Closed Doors - The latest exhibit from the WAG's New Contemporary series reveals what is often unseen by the public, the artist's process in their studio, and their research from the museum vault. There is a sense of enchantment visiting artists in their spaces and connecting the ways ideas are expressed in different forms.
The exhibition brings together work from artists based in Winnipeg or with Winnipeg roots. Artists Ian August and Irene Bindi researched pieces from the WAG collection to inform and influence new works created for this show that unveil layers of knowledge and material.
